SiR’s stately croon exudes grown-and-sexy. The Inglewood, California, R&b singer-songwriter’s style is careful and studied, influenced by the timelessness of Stevie Wonder and John Mayer’s sensitive edge. His 2019 release, Chasing Summer, was a gauzy yarn that still holds up in the field of modern R&b. With its bounce and levity, the LP balanced odes to good weed, chasing skirts, and the city he loves with fleeting explorations of discomfort. He had a jazzy attitude in a landscape that skewed pop, establishing himself as an artist...

When singer-songwriter SiR started growing his dreadlocks in 2010, he didn’t know the level of maintenance it would require. He was initially enthused by the Rastafarian concept of locs and their spiritual significance, finding meaning behind the now-popular hairdo. Although not as invested anymore, he realizes how his loc journey coincides with his personal development. There’s been plenty of breakage but also restoration.

Yearning can be a difficult feeling to capture on-screen. Love stories are little without a tragic element, and defining the spaces in between moments of romantic reverie can be a challenge for even the best filmmakers and the most dedicated actors. Yun Su-ik and leading performers Han So-hee and Han Hae-in have taken a surprisingly unconventional approach to a tale of young love with “Heavy Snow”, a slight but cutting series of snapshots of a brief high-school fling that has long-lasting ramifications.
Heavy Snow is screening at BFI Flare
Han Hae-in is Su-an, an acting-major loner living in a small coastal town, introduced by wielding a loaded paintball gun as part of her performance in drama class. When performing Shakespeare, she resembles less of a traditional Hamlet and more of a school shooter, keeping her classmates on the backfoot as she alienates them with her extreme commitment to her version of a classic role.

Maroon 5 will return to Dolby Live at Park MGM this year for another Las Vegas residency.
Their residency is set to begin in May and end in October, with only a few summer dates scheduled.
Last December, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine spoke to Howard Stern on the Howard Stern Show and talked about how the son of singer Graham Nash, Jackson, helped the pop rock band make its name.
“He put us in with some amazing people and helped me make a demo, and that demo wound up being the demo that got us our second record deal. He was hugely integral in us getting a kind of second chance because we wouldn’t have had any money to make the demo, we got signed off of so that was huge,” Levine said. “I will always be eternally grateful to [Graham].”

Bring Me the Horizon have unveiled the new song “Kool-Aid,” the latest single from their forthcoming album Post Human: NeX GEn.
While not as crushing as the band’s early deathcore years, the song hits hard compared to some of the UK act’s more recent pop-inspired output. Singer Oli Sykes goes full-scream mode at certain points in the track, as he sings over some heavy riffage.
Post Human: NeX GEn was originally set to arrive in September 2023, but was indefinitely delayed. A new press release states that the album will “be released this year, with the official release date forthcoming.”
“Kool-Aid” is the first song Bring Me the Horizon have released since announcing the departure of keyboardist/programmer Jordan Fish in late December. It’s unclear if he played on the track, but a new band photo (see above) accompanying the song doesn’t include Fish.

Despite an unceremonious split with Slayer toward the end of the band’s career, founding member Dave Lombardo still holds the iconic metal act in high regard. In fact, the legendary drummer insists that Slayer were the best of the “Big Four” thrash bands.
Slayer certainly have some stiff competition when it comes to the rest of the Big Four, namely Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. But as Lombardo told Metal Hammer in a new interview, he feels Slayer were a cut above the rest.
When asked directly to name the best “Big Four” band, the drummer immediately responded, “Slayer.” And though he followed the answer with a little laugh, he went on to explain, “Who else could I pick?! We were brutal man, we were on top of our game, and if you watch the videos we were on fire. We really showed everyone else how it should be done...

1996 was a dark year for The Italian Stallion. Sylvester Stallone had two pricey flops in 1995, with Judge Dredd and Assassins. His Christmas of 1996 disaster movie release, Daylight, was another box office bomb. Just a few years before, Stallone had made a significant comeback with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, but now the whole industry was changing. Carolco, the company that financed some of the era’s biggest hits, had gone bankrupt, and action movies were getting smaller and smaller. Arnold Schwarzenegger was on the decline, with Eraser a smaller hit than usual. Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal were only a few years away from making direct-to-video movies. What was Sly to do? The result is one of his very best movies –Cop Land – as we explore in the episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited.

ESPN has switched up its soundtrack for Monday Night Football with a new opening theme in which Chris Stapleton, Snoop Dogg, and Cindy Blackman Santana perform a “reimagining” of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight.” Check it out below.
If you really nit-pick this, the unlikely cover actually makes a decent amount of sense: Stapleton and Snoop have both performed at recent Super Bowls, with Stapleton performing the National Anthem this year and Snoop a part of the Halftime Show in 202. “In the Air Tonight” obviously needs a powerful drummer like Santana, who’s performed with legends including Pharoah Sanders, Lenny Kravitz, and — you guessed it! — Santana.
Why Collins’ 1981 smash hit was chosen as ESPN’s new hype anthem, however, is a bit of a head-scratcher. In a statement, the network said “In the Air Tonight” has a “deep relationship” with football, “having been cited in the past and present...

Before Indiana Jones entered director James Mangold’s life, Harrison Ford told him he was worried Indy was looking too old.
It was the fall of 2019, and Mangold had joined the team working on the film adaptation of “The Call of the Wild,” in which Ford plays a rugged frontiersman, to help with reshoots. In their downtime, Ford began confiding in Mangold about the fifth “Indiana Jones” movie, which had been bouncing around in development for the better part of three years. Steven Spielberg and screenwriter David Koepp had conceived a roughly five-minute opening sequence set during World War II, in which Ford would be digitally de-aged. Ford wasn’t sure it was a good idea.
“Harrison told me he was nervous, because he felt like if people saw him younger, when they confronted Indiana in his 70s they’d be disappointed,” Mangold says, sitting on a cream-colored couch inside...

Describing music “cinematic” has, by now, become a cliché, but King Krule’s Space Heavy conjures very specific visual images to mind, specifically of a solitary day by the sea. The album’s songs are carefully grounded with concrete details like the trains he’s spent the last few years riding as he splits his time between London and the coast. And while the 28-year-old singer-songwriter is now a father in a long-term relationship, his fifth studio album emanates from a lonelier-sounding space than past releases like 2013’s 6 Feet Beneath the Moon.
The music on Space Heavy is notably grimmer than the lyrics, but even its lyrical themes return again and again to the subject of isolation. “Wednesday Overcast” details lovers struggling to find one another, while “Seaforth,” whose title comes from a town north of Liverpool, is a love song with apocalyptic allusions to watching “the planet dyin’ up above.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” stars Harrison Ford in his final performance as the swashbuckling fedora-wearing adventurer, a legendary role he’s played in five films across 40 years. But he says he is officially ready to retire the character.
“Is it not evident?” the 80-year-old actor joked at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday’s press conference for the action-adventure. “I need to sit down and rest a little bit.”
In returning to the character for one last time, Ford expressed a desire to see “a completion of the five films.” He added, “I wanted to see the weight of life on him. I wanted to see him require reinvention. I wanted him to have a relationship that wasn’t a flirty movie relationship.”
He’s referring to the character played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who plays the plucky goddaughter of Indiana Jones. She, too, was happy to play...

Indy’s back — and in tears.
The time finally came for the Cannes Film Festival to host an old friend — a swashbuckling archaeologist named Indiana Jones — courtesy of the world premiere of James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Held Thursday evening at the Palais, the screening saw the filmmaker joined by beloved franchise star Harrison Ford alongside co-stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge (in Schiaparelli Haute Couture), Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore (in custom Ami), Shaunette Renee Wilson and Mads Mikkelsen.
And after every last credit rolled for the Lucasfilm and Disney blockbuster, the black-tie audience responded by dialing up a rousing standing ovation to five minutes, a strong showing for the out-of-competition title on what turned out to be a very emotional night for its franchise star.
Ahead of the screening, festival director Thierry Fremaux surprised the audience by taking the stage and presenting a highlight reel of Ford’s legendary career.

Heavy Metal Magazine debuted on newsstand racks in 1977, instantly becoming the go-to magazine for fans of hardcore music and underground comix. Despite its title, it wasn't devoted strictly to heavy metal music, but to an entire underground lifestyle, and many notable fantasy artists built their names on its art. No hip kid in the late '70s and early '80s was without several issues of Heavy Metal in their apartment. Because Heavy Metal sold itself as a magazine and not as a comic book, it was free of the content strictures of the Comics Code Authority, allowing it to print more violent and sexual content. Mad Magazine enacted a similar ploy, but merely to get away with ribald jokes that skewered Madison Ave.
By 1981, Heavy Metal had built enough of an underground imprimatur to warrant the production of a feature film. Producer Ivan Reitman teamed up with a Canadian...

One of the more well-known and fascinating obstacles that come with filmmaking is studio interference. There have been plenty of interesting stories from acclaimed directors behind blockbusters and lesser-known projects that have had to fight for the integrity of their vision. Sometimes it can be a losing battle, but there have been some pretty crazy stories in recent memory that showed the potential of staying true to the story you want to tell. The industry landscape has changed in recent years, where social media campaigns and crowdfunding can now help filmmakers to achieve their story aspirations without interference.
A more recent example would be Jim Cummings and Pj McCabe's "The Beta Test," a film that "circumvented the system" in the words of its directors, who made their film with no interference. In the case of films made decades earlier, it wasn't as easy. For example, director James Mangold's second-ever feature,...

John Candy may no longer be with us, but he's still Canada's national treasure. Amongst his raunchy '80s peers, the Second City comedy alumnus had a gift. His warmth never failed to give us a smile when he appeared on-screen. His best films built on that endlessly loving part of Candy, turning him into an honorary family member, a silly babysitter for our darker days.
Despite his comedy prowess, his dramatic roles made us look at him in a new light. When he died in 1994 at 43, we lost decades of potential work where we could have deepened his craft. As a Canadian whose vibrant attitude borrows from the best in Candy, Ryan Reynolds understands what Candy means to all of us. Reynolds' production company is working on a documentary on Candy's life and legacy. For now, we have Candy's movies to remember him by when we miss his infectious laugh.

Gerald Potterton, the London-born filmmaker and animator who directed the 1981 animated cult favorite Heavy Metal and contributed to the memorable “Liverpool” sequence in the 1968 Beatles film Yellow Submarine, died today at a Quebec hospital. He was 91.
His death was announced by the National Film Board of Canada. No cause was stated.
“Gerald came to Canada and the Nfb to be part of a new wave of storytelling, one that was fresh and irreverent, and he brought great wit and creativity to every project,” said Claude Joli-Coeur, Nfb Chairperson and Government Film Commissioner, in a statement. “He was also a builder, helping to lay the foundation for today’s independent Canadian animation industry with Potterton Productions…He was an exceptional artist and a truly nice man.”
Potterton had graduated from London’s Hammersmith Art School when he moved to Canada in 1954, working with the Nfb before directing his own notable animated shorts in the early ’60s.

Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias can remember the exact date and moment he made his stand-up comedy debut, even though it wasn’t planned. It was April 10, 1997, at the Golden Sails Hotel in his hometown of Long Beach, Calif. There was a bar with a stage that welcomed artists on a regular basis, but that particular night the emcee failed to show up.
“My buddy said to me, ‘Dude, you always talk about wanting to do stand-up. Just get up there and emcee,’” Iglesias says.
The 20-year-old cellphone salesman resisted at first, but destiny would not be denied — eventually he jumped up and spoke for what he believes was three or four minutes, though Iglesias admits, “It felt like an eternity.”
But the crowd laughed. And Iglesias was hooked.
It would take some time for Iglesias to fully transform into his “Fluffy” persona, perhaps best exemplified by his broad smile, bold Hawaiian...

James Mangold was hot off his feature directorial debut “Heavy” when he landed a star-studded cast and an industry-leading distributor (Miramax) for his 1997 follow-up “Cop Land.” Working with Miramax brought Mangold into the orbit of Harvey Weinstein early in the director’s career. In a new interview with Vulture looking back at the making and release of “Cop Land,” Mangold details how Miramax in the late 1990s was “an incredibly thuggish place to work.”
“It had a very unusual environment at that time,” Mangold said. “[It was] this place that seemed golden, in Hollywood’s eyes, and in the zeitgeist. You felt honored to be included, but you also felt like you were a cog in a system that was dark and corrupt. It seemed like everyone was reading their own clippings and feeling thrilled to be part of this club that was the hottest little studio in the world.”

According to Beth Heyn at Heavy, the new Fox show “Deputy” premiered January 2, 2020 at 8 p.m. Et. The show’s star is Stephen Dorff who plays L.A. sheriff Bill Hollister. He’s kind of a modern-day Wyatt Earp who cares a lot more about catching lots of bad guys than he does about playing departmental politics. His style leans more toward driving a vintage Ford Bronco than traveling around the L.A. city streets in a new sheriff’s car or a Fed-style black Suburban. He’s just a cowboy boot-wearing kick-ass cop with an attitude and a no-nonsense approach to everything related

Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” was watched more than 26 million times during its first week on Netflix, according to Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos on Tuesday.
To be precise, he said 26,404,081 accounts watched the mob epic in the first seven days following its release on Nov. 27. Sarandos, speaking at the Ubs Global Tmt Conference, reminded the audience that Netflix counts a view once someone has watched 70% of a show or movie. For “The Irishman,” which clocked in at 3 hours and 29 minutes, that means more than 26 million accounts made it through about 2.5 hours of the movie.
Netflix’s internal measurement for “The Irishman” trounces the 13.2 million U.S. viewers that Nielsen reported watched the film in its first five days.

James Mangold has been riding around the Oscar racetrack for decades now, and although several of his films have collected prizes, he has yet to cross the finish line himself. That could change with “Ford v Ferrari,” a critically acclaimed racing drama that just might land the veteran filmmaker in the Best Director race for the first time.
See Tracy Letts Interview: ‘Ford v Ferrari’
Mangold earned his first Oscar bid for the revisionist superhero flick “Logan” (2017), which brought him a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination (shared with Scott Frank and Michael Green). It’s surprising that was his first trip to the ceremony as a contender, considering how many of his titles had been major awards players before that.

Exclusive: I have learned that Daniel Zovatto has been tapped for a lead role in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, a followup to Penny Dreadful from the original series’ creator, writer and executive producer John Logan.
