HBO Documentary Films has acquired Us rights to vet Nick Broomfield's chilling true crime document "Tales of the Grim Sleeper" out of Toronto. Broomfield has directed "Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer," "Kurt & Courtney" and "Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam," to name a few. "Tales of the Grim Sleeper" is his fifth doc for HBO. It will air on HBO in 2015. Here's the synopsis: When Lonnie Franklin Jr. was arrested in South Central Los Angeles in 2010 as the suspected murderer of a string of young black women, police hailed it as the culmination of 20 years of investigations. Four years later, documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield visited the alleged killer's neighborhood to find out if the police had earned their self-given kudos. There, he finds a world of people who suspected for decades that there might be some connection between their odd neighbor and the dozens of women who had gone missing from the street.

I used to offer a disclaimer when recommending Nick Broomfield documentaries, noting that I believe him to be a genius filmmaker but acknowledge that he’s also an acquired taste. This isn’t something I need to put out there for Tales of the Grim Sleeper. Not since his early days (not counting his brief stint with docu-drama last decade) has he been so reserved with his documentary work. It’s probably his most accessible in his four-decade career. It’s also one of his best. While yet another investigatory feature, in which he’s again on screen a whole lot, his personality this time is not overbearing on the subject matter. He surely realized that this isn’t a tabloid story and therefore doesn’t welcome the faux-naive tabloid character that he plays in such docs as Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam, Kurt & Courtney and his previous release, the hugely disappointing Sarah Palin: You Betcha. Tales...

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain -- The massacre of 24 Iraqi civilians in Haditha by U.S. Marines is the subject of Nick Broomfield's next movie, the British director said. Broomfield, known for documentaries like Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam, said here Friday that he will use dramatic reconstruction rather than documentary techniques to tell the story of the slayings. In November, Marines allegedly shot dead 24 Iraqi men, women and children in Haditha, in western Iraq, in reprisal for the killing of a lance corporal by a roadside bomb. Witnesses said the Marines went from house to house killing members of three families, including a 1-year-old child. Military investigations into the incident are ongoing.
