Another typical revenge saga, but Sridevi is there to do the job
Peter_Young5 March 2011
Well, another heroine-oriented movie in which the leading lady loses her beloved because of some cruel villain. The film is quite poorly made and is filled with many overdone action scenes which were quite typical at the time as well as numerous horribly-made comic sequences. The film also has an extended appearance by Shahrukh Khan to enhance its market value, but he is not given much to do with his role. Army is a Sridevi vehicle and she is excellent. First, she looks beautiful and does well in all the phases of her character, whether it's the happy wife, the traumatised widow, or the decisive avenger. The role is not as good as the role she had in Gumrah, but it's good enough and she anyway manages to rise above the film's silliness. Danny Denzongpa plays the exact caricature villain he played in many other films. The music is forgettable. I see no reason to recommend this unless you are a Sridevi fan.

Nice vibe between Sridevi and Shah Rukh
MadameMovie4 June 2005
Too bad that Shah Rukh Khan's role was so small in this movie. The scenes with him and Sridevi are just too funny. You do get a shock of seeing him with a moustache but thank god he will get rid of that soon. He was so funny and Sridevi is just amazing. But his part in the movie is too short. After his part these 4 losers come along, and the whole movie line changes, and these 4 guys all look alike, with leather pants and jackets, as if they are about to go to a Fonzie reunion! The villain is too unreal, He is a too strict looking guy. Anyway it was just not my cup of tea, Go see it if you are a Shah Rukh Khan or Sridevi fan like me, cause you need to see his part, and sit the movie through cause he has another short part somewhere in the middle of the movie.

Army of leather clad criminals
HeadleyLamarr10 March 2007
Geeta (Sridevi) is married to Arjun (Shahrukh) but before their child is born he is killed by the weapons trafficking Naagraaj (Danny Denzongpa). In the meantime five young men have been arrested for murder and are in jail waiting to be put to death. Sridevi busts them out of jail, and uses them to plot revenge against Naagraaj. Instead of the usual Jai Ma Kaali version we have the Jai Jai Mahadev version and a rather straight story without too many surprises. The leather clad criminals are very forgettable, and their love stories are inane and silly. Danny Denzongpa does a good job as the cruel criminal type, Kiran Kumar is good as the jailer brother. Shahrukh has a small but vital role and does not disappoint, he does it competently and has good chemistry with Sridevi. Sridevi shines as usual - this may not be one of her best, but even that is always good. The song and dance on broken glass was certainly inspired by Sholay. The music is decent, the story a simple tale of revenge but the movie is certainly worth a one time watch.

Wow

Warning: Spoilers
I didn't realize Sridevi starred in this - because it was billed as a SRK movie. So happy - as I love her. SRK has a bit part. He's good in it - typical romantic comedy SRK. But this movie is ALL about Sridevi in a hell hath no fury revenge role. Yay - women power.

Despite the formulaic nature of this film, I found it REALLY moving. I cried. A lot. Sobbing at the end actually.

Yes, there were lots of WTF plot hole moments in it that make you scream out - WTF!!! Like - dude - could you not check to make sure your gun had bullets in it BEFORE you put your elaborate plan into action to corner the bad guy? And how the heck did the bad guy - who was outnumbered and cornered on the stairs with a broken leg manage to escape!!! There were several moments where - I was literally screaming at the screen - just kill him already. Stop talking and KILL HIM!!!! And - considering I consider myself a bit of a pacifist - I was truly totally invested in this movie.

Danny Denzongpa is absolutely fabulous as the bad guy. You don't really get a sense of just how good he is until he becomes truly vulnerable at the end.

The songs are really nice. The story lines for our 5 recruits who aid Sridevi are fleshed out enough that you care about them and cry when they cry. But again, this is all about Sridevi seeking revenge. And her performance knocked this out of the park for me.

The only "odd" moment - where I was distanced from the plot because of an artistic choice - was when Sridevi was being tortured. On the one hand, this is the only song in the movie where we get to see the fabulous Sridevi dance. On the other hand - having a torture scene done as interpretive dance - no matter how well done - and it was done well - is odd. Despite the odd nature of this scene/song, the emotional depth Sridevi brings to the scene and what was going on for her character was evident and yeah - I cried despite part of my brain thinking - am I really seeing this? I mean - it's a frigging dance number!!!!

I loved this movie. I LOVED this movie. I love Sridevi. She is an amazing talent. I loved the plot - and I don't normally like revenge movies. I loved everything about it - included the odd dance number towards the end. Despite the formulaic nature of the movie. I loved it. Sridevi is a goddess. And the part where she goes full Mifune on a horse with a sword? Wow.

Cool

Overall this was a very good movie. Shah Rukh Khan's scenes were clearly the highlight as his interaction with Sridevi was brilliant and funny. Although I thought he was very good in the film the film focused too much on him (i mean 3 songs with the guy who's only there for 15 minutes?!) It should have concentrated on fleshing out the 'Army' more and the three love stories were basically pointless. I feel Mohnish Behl and Sudesh Berry's characters were more identifiable than the other three and so i was unhappy with the climax. The first song especially and the 'Army' song are clearly the only two songs worth remembering. But watched as a whole the movie leaves you feeling good.
