Warning: Spoilers
Kellie Martin plays a young deaf mute in this touching, yet not sickly TV movie, cementing her as an actress of astonishing talent and beauty. She may never be one for the limelight, but you can't help feel she deserves to make one big movie to show the world who she is, to put all the A-list actresses who are inferior performers to shame. This probably will not happen, and I'm sure she does not care, but us fans only want to see her get the critical recognition she deserves. And of course, these TV movies of hers are rarely shown or released so we never get to see enough of her.

Anyway, back to the movie. Laura has never been taught sign language, and has lived her 14 years in near constant abuse with her father. A social worker rescues her and after a tough start they form a close relationship and teach each other. Laura learns sign language and hangs out with other deaf kids and makes many friends. However, her father is still searching for her, and others begin to exploit her. She is naive, and unused to the outside world, but her friendship with Pam Willis, played by Jobeth Williams grows stronger, and they work through each trauma together. By the end, even the hardest of hearts and critics will be moved as Laura shows what she has come to learn.

There are countless TV movies like this, most of them are average and not worth watching, but this one works on many levels, and thanks to Martin's performance we are engaged throughout. Her conveyance of emotions is masterful remembering she cannot speak, and her adoption of the sign language is also brilliant. Few actresses would be capable of this role, even fewer of making it this good. We are genuinely touched, and anytime you feel down, this is one movie you should watch as it never fails to make me happy. One smile from Kellie Martin is enough to make all your woes drift away, and although this may sound cheesy it is true. Williams is strong as the social worker, trying against the odds to rescue Laura, and the supporting cast are all good. So when you get the chance to see this, watch it. It may not be surprising, original or a masterpiece, but it is still a very good film. Also raises issues of family trauma, abuse and how we treat those with a sensory or mental disorder. If this hadn't starred Kellie Martin I probably never would have seen it, and it wouldn't have been very good; But anytime i see a Kellie Martin film on TV make sure I watch it, because I may never get another chance.

Touching

I've seen this kind of movie before, but there was a focus, an intensity in this one that made me watch it all the way through. You do get some dreadful gaping holes in some TV movies (and I usually switch off when I just can't stand the illogic any more) but this was OK; good acting from the main character (the mute illiterate), plausible emotions from the main carer who is putting her job on the line, and from the support cast, including the abusive parents. An hour and a half you'd be challenged to assemble a decent sandwich in.

Thanks: I did the consulting to teach her how to act Deaf!

Glad you thought so.I think she was remarkable and the hardest worker.

We had a lot to do to have her go from a girl with no linguistic skills to the girl at the end. She was amazing.

JoBeth also gave a brilliant performance that she worked hard to have to speak and do ASL at the same time.

I also played the Nun: Sister Anne after being in so many lower budget not even 'b' films, it was great. See me on the IMDb!!

The kids in the classroom and the choir? my real all deaf kids choir "Bridges Sign Choir" in LA.

Keep watching and see other films I've done. Fred Gerber directed and he has also directed the award winning "Desperate Housewives" and more!!!

Working a lot and many projects still, but the IMDb isn't up on them all, I can't do everything you know!!

Kellie Martin at her best!

Breaking Through is one of those tricky movies for an actor/actress where they have to show the audience what they are made of. Kellie Martin has no speaking role in this film being a deaf and mute 14-year old girl who is kept locked up in her home since her birth by her abusive father. Kellie Martin, a veteran in TV-movie land, has to show us her capability to portray this girl by body-language and facial expression only - no words! Seeing this movie, you realize that most of the actors can only show us their emotions with the help of words put in their mouth by the scriptwriter. After the end credits you come to the conclusion that Kellie Martin is one of Hollywood's greatest actresses. This film is Kellie Martin at her best! Highly recommended!

An effective and moving drama, eloquent and poignant.

I discovered this enthralling film by pure chance in a bout of late-night channel hopping. Although the people it portrays are vulnerable it stays honest and avoids becoming a wet blanket making it powerful, moving and informing. The two main players seemed to interact so well that suspension of disbelief was not a requirement - a tribute to their performance.

This film gives you a fresh perspective on life and offers valuable insights from the female perspective. Acting was spot-on for me.The A.S.L. (American Sign-Language) helps - I wonderful if the film would have taken on a different "look" if it had been in the British equivalent - a more abstracted animated visual language (in my honest (but very humble and possibly uninformed) opinion.

An excellent film especially for the small-screen in terms of reaching viewers.

Maudlin and Paternalistic

I'm sorry to disagree with the masses here, but I found this movie to be terribly cloying. The acting was earnest, and Kellie Martin and JoBeth Williams do what they can with the script. But, please, spare us yet ANOTHER movie where a poor, victimized disabled person comes to terms with life via the help of a benevolent social worker who cares...REALLY CARES (and WHY is there the obligatory element of the social worker risking her job because she just CARES too damn much?).

Another point to make here: Jennifer, if you had to teach Kellie Martin how to seem Deaf for this role, let me give you a word of advice: how's about they hire a DEAF ACTRESS?! This movie highlighted all of the worst stereotypes about Deafness: Deaf are helpless, Deaf are victims, Deaf want to speak, Speaking is good, Hearning people must save Deaf people, Hearing people must play Deaf roles because Deaf people are incapable of acting their own experiences (Marlee Matlin aside) ...enough already.

By the way, I'm Hearing. But this stuff just gets on my nerves. When people praise, say, Adam Sadler in his portrayal of the Sidney Poitier story -- then I'll be impressed.

Painful

Wow this movie hasn't aged well.

The classic theme of a Hearing savior to save the poor helpless Deaf person and show the path to enlightenment... Not realistic and offensive.
