Jóhann Jóhannsson's End of Summer is exclusively showing on Mubi from September 30 - October 30, 2020.End of SummerIn the only two movies he directed and scored himself, Jóhann Jóhannsson gave us a vision of human otherness, a sense of people without people. End of Summer (2014) and Last and First Men (2019) both present landscapes riven with energy but fresh out of humans. Last and First Men was filmed all around the former Yugoslavia, using 16mm anamorphic camera lenses. The only subjects before the lens are “spomenik,” enormous statues built after World War II to commemorate sites of violence. The figures are based on ancient, unfamiliar shapes and seem far from any common experience of Earth. Tilda Swinton’s narration, taken from a 1930s sci-fi novel, describes a dying race from the future talking to the dying race of the present—us. Jóhannsson’s music blends with field recordings and flows under...

Lumberjanes, the smash hit all-ages comic created by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson and Brooklyn Allen, is coming to streaming.
Boom! Studios announced that HBO Max picked up the rights to the comic with a script-to-series order. Co-creator Stevenson, the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, is attached as showrunner and executive producer.
The comic follows friends Ripley, Molly, April, Jo, and Mal, attendees of the Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. They discover that there’s more to their camp than meets the eye, and spend the rest of their summer discovering secrets about their camp, the area around it, and building he kind of durable, long-lasting friendships that come from solving life threatening mysteries together. Just like regular camp.
We kid, but Lumberjanes is genuinely terrific. It’s ceaselessly fun, whip smart, with almost universally great storytelling in the art.

Frank de Boer strides. The ball lazily at his feet with direction. Suddenly vision. A long, fifty metre pass. The right foot of Dennis Bergkamp in the Argentina penalty area. Control. Dead. The second touch. The ball bounces behind behind Roberto Ayala. The right foot scoops. The ball curves passed Carlos Roa. The net bulges. The arms raised.
Twenty years on from that Bergkamp goal and France’s destruction of Brazil in the 1998 World Cup final, all eyes are on Russia to see who will capture football’s greatest prize. Quan Zhou’s debut feature looks back at the summer of ’98 and the developing friendship between a young boy and his elderly and lonely neighbour in a small Chinese town, with the odd football reference thrown in.
