"Irren ist männlich" or "Father's Day" is a German live action film from 1996, so this one's already over 20 years old and this film that runs for a bit over 90 minutes was directed by Sherry Hormann. He as well as the two writers aren't the stars here as the castincludes a handful of actors that are still fairly known today here in the German-speaking area. Knaup especially, but Harfouch is an okay actress as well and Wörner at least gets in some nice looks. Milberg, Müller and Neuhauser are a bit meh, but at least you get to see the young Robert Gwisdek. All in all, I believe the cast still elevates the material most of the time and the outcome could have been even worse. This film probably works at its best when it goes for 100% comedy. The more emotional as well as the more dramatic parts did very little for me and sadly, these get more and more frequent the longer the film goes, so especially in the second half. This is the story of an egomaniac who while cheating on his wife finds out that he is genrtically unable to father any children. So where do his two kids come from is the big question. I think it was a good decision to tell audiences quickly as it was fairly obvious anway who was the actual father from several situations. Other cringeworthy films would have carried the "mystery" until the very end, but luckily this one here didn't. Still there are other weaknesses with realism and authenticity and you can never take the film seriously, which actually would have been fine if it had not wanted to be taken seriously at times, but it does and well the outcome is pretty bad, which is also why I believe that the movie overall has more weaknesses than strengths or at least more memorable weaknesses. As a pointless comedy, it could have gotten another 2 stars from me, as an actual family drama definitely not. The cast can only make up for so much. Gotta give this one a thumbs-dowqn. Not recommended.
