A long time ago we set some boundaries; Don't cross them!
sol121824 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** The life that the Chadways lived was anything but normal. The head of the house real estate developer Clay Chadway, Richard Crenna, seemed to take the abuse he suffered from his jealous and neurotic wife Renee, Angie Dickinson, all in stride forgiving her for every crazy and unfounded accusation that she threw at him.

With the exception of Joanne, Molly Gross, Clay treated his children as if they were total strangers to him. Clay drove his son Bobby, Jeff Kizer, to become a virtual shut-in and older daughter Lisa, Christe Lynn Smith, to rarely stay at home spending most of her time, from work at the beauty salon, staying with her friends.

It was when Clay was spotted by Renee at a local restaurant with her sister Ellen, Meg Foster, that all the secrets that he's been keeping from his children as well as himself came to the surface! As if by accident Renee's suspicions of Clay having a relationship with Ellen brought out the truth about her and the circumstance of Renee's marriage to Clay. Circumstance that were too shocking for anyone, even Clay Chadway,to even try to describe!

Trying to put on an act as the caring husband and father Clay's fantasy world was soon to come crashing down on him. It was Clay's wife Renee's unfounded accusations against him that in the end had him finally lose it. Not that Clay wasn't somewhat responsible for his unfeeling treatment of his son Bobby and daughter Lisa, for some reason that would soon come out he didn't feel the same way about Joanne, he in fact was far more innocent of the acts that Renee accused him of then she was!

***SPOILER***It was on one cold rainy night when Renee pulled another one of her disappearing acts on him that the by now out of patience Clay finally lost his cool! And that in the end cost him a lot more then what Renee ended up losing!

Even though he was the heavy in the movie Clay Chadway, or Richard Crenna, was by far the most sympathetic character in the film. Clay did everything that he could to hold his both marriage and family together but the ghosts from his, and Renee's, past were just too much for him to overcome. It was in fact Renee's guilt, not Clay's, that was far more responsible for all the horrors that she suffered in life in trying to keep her past buried.

P.S Look for an almost microscopic cameo appearance, and try to keep from blinking in order not to miss it, of actor Tony Musante as Mr. Lennox the Chadway family attorney. Musante's as the accused gay murderer in "The Detective" and the knife wielding subway psycho in "the Incident", both films made within a year of each other, were two ground breaking roles that finally put stark and shocking realism into movies coming out of the then "World of make Believe" Hollywood studios.

Come for the true crime. Stay for Angie Dickinson having visions of white wolves.

Warning: Spoilers
Deep Family Secrets isn't just a strange movie. It's a strange movie based on the true story of Gaylynn Morris, who eventually pleaded guilty to the murder of his wife Ruby. In this film, the names were changed to Clay and Renee Chadway. This may have originally aired on CBS, but it feels like a Lifetime film. And we all know that Lifetime movies are giallo minus the neon red blood and nudity.

Originally airing on April 15, 1997, this made for TV movie is packed with talent. The leads are Richard Crenna (the Rambo series of films) and Angie Dickinson (Dressed to Kill). Along for the ride are dependable actors like Meg Foster (Stepfather 2, They Live), Craig Wasson (Schizoid) and Tony Musante (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage).

Everything seems normal in the Chadway family until daughter JoAnne uncovers decades of lies, adultery, paternal fraud, criminal activities and so much more. She's also a country singer who sounds a lot like Elliot Smith and no one comments that her insanely sad songs completely blow the mood.

Good flick? Just the opposite!

Come on? FANTASTIC DRAMA ON SCREEN? Are you joking folks? I wouldn't put horrible Molly Gross to play even in school play! Where did these people learn acting? Borrowing some papers from their neighbors actor? Terrible plot, awful acting. Heh ... why do you take us for an imbeciles? What can I say more. I understand this is an TV production and the acting is not supposed to be the one from Citizen Kane. But nevertheless they should try it harder in order to earn their money. And apart from that what can be said IN 10 LINES for a simple movie like this? U wanna article in the morning paper? To say what? Worse film in the decade? OK, you want it - you got it!

Based on true story? SPOILER
sheezhank224 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I was just watching a Forensic Files marathon on Court TV. The episode was identical to the plot of this movie, right down to the incest secret and the affair-with-the-sister subplot. I don't recall any Based on a True Story disclaimer, but the case does have MOW written all over it. Apparently it chronicles the real homicide of Ruby Morris by her husband Earl, sentenced to 25 years to life for her murder. Just goes to show you, truth can be stranger than fiction, because I thought the Lifetime plot was contrived and a more than "a stretch" insofar as believability goes. I'm with the other posters who said the acting was bad. I didn't notice it with all of the players, though. It was really the lead character, the daughter, whose performance was bad.

Worst acting. Ever.
hershiser23 November 2002
I know this is a made for TV movie, and the acting in made for TV movies is usually sub-par, but it's absolutely horrendous in this film. Sometimes acting gets so bad it's laughable, but in this case, it's so bad it's sickening.

Very interesting movie, keeps your attention.

I really enjoyed this movie, the actors are all great. At first you kind of find yourself feeling sorry for the mother, but as it progresses you realize it is her own doing that is making her so miserable. I have watched it 2-3 time and enjoyed each time. I usually do not watch anything I have seen before. I would love to know the song his daughter sang. I have watched this movie 2-3 times and the song eludes me each time. I try to see it in credits, but writing is too small. If anyone knows the song please help.I read in one of the other comments where someone thought she was a good singer, maybe that person can help me. I really was not able to get to many words to the song as I came into room just as she stopped sing, or the went to another scene.Thank you. mapa-2

Uhm... is this a joke?
GreenTurtle101028 September 2003
I'm watching this film as I write this. It's about 45 minutes into the film and there's been so much back and forth and empty drama, I don't quite see where it's going. No facts, just enough to leave you making assumptions. The acting of main daughter is painful. How did this ever get made??? Not the best of Lifetime films.

Terrible!!!!
star_fire_11822 March 2004
Warning: Spoilers
This was possibly the worst film I have seen yet. The acting was terrible, and it was lacking the element of surprise. The whole storyline was predictable. This truly seemed like a low budget film. I couldn't be more disappointed with some of the other elements. (SPOILER)They had the son be his mother's son also. Gross! They depicted the mother as some sort of slut, which couldn't have been done in a worse way. I mean, I have no problem with movies that have women sleeping around, however, this one was terribly insane. Who the hell were the writers? See this for yourself to understand my logic. This was the worst film EVER!

Yeah, Angies good, but the movie stinks.
fastpitch-17 December 2006
This is a terrible film. Angie Dickenson is a class act and always does well, but she does not get many roles any more and she must have needed some money to do this film. By the way, she is on screen less than 10 minutes. Oooh, wait, there is one redeeming feature in this film: Meg Foster has a small part in this film. Now, Meg has been on the screen for 35 years and is not particularly great but she has the scariest eyes of any actress I have ever seen. By name, you probably don't know her, but one look at her eyes and you will recognize her. To summarize: the acting is horrid, the story bad, and even the filmography is dreadful. A screen going to black every time the director wants to change scenes is pretty moronic. Watch any thing else but this, even Mr Ed reruns!

Who did it, or was it even done?
vlyson5 August 2002
I had not heard of this film before I saw it listed in TV Guide for tonight (8/5/02) on the Lifetime channel. Any film with Richard Crenna draws my immediate attention. I was not disappointed; he gave his usual flawless performance. The actress who played his middle daughter gave a rather overwrought performance at times; however, if she actually did her own singing, she has a great voice.

Angie Dickenson portrays a character one feels little sympathy for; therefore, when she turns up missing again, one does not really feel the loss--but can certainly sympathize with her distraught daughter. The rest of the film does indeed reveal deep family secrets. This film will keep you guessing.

Abandon all hope, ye who watch this.
randyraiford25 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This was intolerable. (SPOILER #1) Protagonists avoid the pointless disclosure of agonizing truths to their loved ones, lest they surrender said status and assume the roles of Antagonists. (SPOILER #2) The writers would have us believe that the exposure of multiple transgressions, by the transgressor, presents a threat to, and provokes a retaliatory response by, the primary victim of the transgressions. (SPOILER #3) Until the final 15 minutes, I was anticipating a score of 6 to 8 out of 10; instead, it was kind of like discovering that Lieutenant Columbo's dog is the REAL murderer. The story just wasn't credible, and I don't think the world's best director could have saved it without massive editing.

FANTASTIC ACTING AND DRAMA IN THIS FILM!
whpratt120 July 2003
Richard Crenna, "Body Heat" and Angie Dickinson "Dressed to Kill", gave a fantastic performance together as husband and wife. Whenever Angie appears in a film, you can count on a good performance and lots of action and drama. If it was not for these two actors appearing in this TV drama, the entire plot would fall on its face. The great sadness Richard Crenna was able to show the audience with his daughter and the great repect and love he had for her was great acting by a veteran actor who passed on to the higher stage in his life. Angie and Richard were a great fighting team as husband and wife. If you love these two actors, this is a classic TV show!

Not Entirely Accurate But A Good Film
Rainey-Dawn28 July 2023
Not entirely accurate as to what really happened but close to it. Some things were changed slightly to make the film work better - I'm guessing.

Richard Crenna, Angie Dickinson and Meg Foster did a wonderful job! The rest of the cast is fine as well. Some good cinematography as well.

The story is creepy - to think your father (or the man you know as 'daddy') killed your mother! Worse to find out he's not your own flesh and blood. The worst is Randy - he was the product of incest.

The real story of what actually happened makes me shiver reading it - and to watch it played out on screen is real horror.

Good movie - recommended if you like this type of film.

8/10.
