Ethan Hawke reveals what Denzel Washington said to him the night Hawke lost his ‘Training Day’ Oscar
The year was 2002 and Ethan Hawke was up for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his work in “Training Day.” When Marcia Gay Harden read Jim Broadbent’s name, winning for “Iris,” Hawke’s co-star Denzel Washington whispered something in his ear.
It wasn’t “boom!” As Hawke revealed in a recent interview, Washington – who had already won an Oscar for “Glory” and would win a second that very night – said, “It’s better that you didn’t win. Losing was better.”
Hawke, who would go on to get three more Oscar nominations for acting (“Boyhood”) as well as screenwriting, expanded what Washington meant. “You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status,” he said. “That’s the way he thinks. That’s what I’m talking about playing with Babe Ruth. The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple.

Ridley Scott‘s wildly ambitious “Napoleon” might be the director’s last word on its subject, but it’s not the first time he tackled both the glory and the absurdity of the Napoleonic era. One could say that “Napoleon” has been 46 years in the making, since Scott first began thinking about and researching the French emperor during the making of his debut feature, “The Duellists,” in 1977. That film tells the story of two officers (Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel) in Napoleon’s army who engage in an obsessive ritual of duels that goes on for so long that they ultimately forget what even started the grievance; in its setting, visual style, and themes, it’s an exceptionally well-realized template for most of the Ridley Scott epics that would follow — and he shot this historical extravaganza on a budget of around $800,000.

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” had its world premiere in Paris on Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean French film critics are pleased with the epic. After being confronted with the words of Napoleon biographer Patrice Gueniffey, who slammed the film as “very anti-French and very pro-British,” director Ridley Scott told the BBC, “The French don’t even like themselves.”
“The audience that I showed it to in Paris, they loved it,” he added.
Scott, who has never been afraid to speak his mind, also told the network that he’s unbothered by claims that his movie is not historically accurate. “You really want me to answer that?… it will have a bleep in it,” he said of the film that stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and Vanessa Kirby as Napoleon’s wife Josephine.
“Were you there? Oh you weren’t there. Then how do you know?” Scott added.

Imagine, if you will, a movie about a costumed hero flying through the air, shooting laser beams out of their eyes. Now imagine that movie had a title card that read, "Directed by Ridley Scott." I'm sorry. It's probably too early in the morning for such flights of fancy. If you did allow yourself a moment to actually consider what that might look like, though, you aren't alone. Some lonely studio exec is sitting on their piles of money, dreaming of a beautiful sunset shining off spandex, shedding a tear over what could have been.
All that is to say that Ridley Scott, the man who brought us films like "Black Hawk Down," "The Martian," "Blade Runner," "Gladiator," "Alien," Kingdom of Heaven," "Thelma & Louise," and "G.I. Jane" has been offered superhero movies in the past, and he's turned them down, according to a recent interview with Deadline. Scott was speaking about his latest offering,...

Will Smith has responded to wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s statements about their turbulent relationship in her forthcoming Oct. 17 memoir, “Worthy.”
In an email to the New York Times, Smith expressed that Pinkett Smith’s revelations about their marriage in her memoir “woke him up.” He realized “she had lived a life more on the edge” and that “she is more resilient, clever and compassionate” than he’d understood.
“When you’ve been with someone for more than half your life, a sort of emotional blindness sets in,” Smith wrote. “And you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.”
Pinkett Smith is currently out on a “Worthy” press tour, on which she’s already revealed key details of her memoir. Previously, Pinkett Smith had dropped the bombshell to People magazine that she and her husband had been separated for six years before the infamous “Oscars slap” incident,...

Viggo Mortensen is a three-time Oscar nominated performer who has been very picky with his projects, appearing only in a handful of movies in a 30-plus year career. But how many of his titles hold up as classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958 in New York City, Mortensen made his big screen debut with a brief performance as an Amish farmer in “Witness” (1985). Supporting roles in “Carlito’s Way” (1993), “Crimson Tide” (1995), “G.I. Jane” (1997) and many others quickly followed. He achieved stardom in middle age playing the warrior Aragorn in Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, released in 2001, 2002 and 2003. His first Oscar bid as Best Actor came shortly thereafter for David Cronenberg‘s thriller “Eastern Promises” (2007), followed by nominations for “Captain Fantastic” (2016) and the Best Picture-winning “Green Book” (2018).

In an interview with People to promote her new memoir, “Worthy,” the actress said she thought the unbelievable moment was part of an elaborate pre-planned bit.

In a new interview with People, former “Saturday Night Live” star Leslie Jones said her friend Chris Rock was “really affected” by the infamous Will Smith Oscars slap at the 2022 Academy Awards.
“That shit was humiliating. It really affected him,” Jones, whose new memoir is called “Leslie F*cking Jones,” told the legacy magazine. “People need to understand his daughters, his parents, saw that. He had to go to counseling with his daughters.”
This event likely doesn’t need a recap, but just in case some readers might not remember what happened, Rock appeared at the 2022 Oscars to announce the winner of Best Documentary. In his remarks before handing out the award, the former Oscars host mocked Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head by suggesting she was ready to star in a sequel to “G.I. Jane.” (Pinkett Smith has alopecia.) Jones, who was watching the show from home that night, said she was “infuriated” upon seeing the incident take place on live television.

Jeff Titus, who has spent 21 years in prison for the murder of two deer hunters in 1990, is a free man thanks to evidence discovered by a true-crime series and podcast.
Titus, a 71-year old man, left Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater, Michigan, in part due to Investigation Discovery’s Killer In Question and Susan Simpson’s podcast Undisclosed.
It marks the latest innocent man to be freed as a result of the boom in interest in true-crime projects.
Titus’ conviction was overturned by U.S. Federal District Court Judge Paul D. Borman after the Michigan Conviction Integrity Unit, the Michigan Department of Attorney General and Titus’ attorneys at the Michigan Innocence Clinic submitted a joint filing requesting that the conviction be set aside, based on multiple Brady violations uncovered.

Janet Yang, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, called her organization’s response to Will Smith’s physical assault on Chris Rock during last year’s Oscar telecast “inadequate.” She made the comment amid opening remarks during Monday’s annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon at the Beverly Hilton.
“I’m sure you all remember we experienced an unprecedented event at the Oscars,” Yang told the attendees. “What happened onstage was fully unacceptable and the response from our organization was inadequate.”
Furthermore, she continued, “We learned from this that the Academy must be fully transparent and accountable in our actions, and particularly in times of crisis you must act swiftly, compassionately and decisively for ourselves and for our industry. You should and can expect no less from us going forward.”

Come another Oscar season, and “G.I. Joe” is on everyone’s lips again.
Following Chris Rock’s quip at Jada Pinkett Smith’s “G.I. Jane” likeness (and Will Smith subsequently slapping him onstage at the Oscars), actual “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” star Channing Tatum reveals that even he did not want to partake in its sequel, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.”
During a Vanity Fair lie detector test video, Tatum talked about his time on the two films, starting with the 2009 “The Rise of Cobra.”
“The first [sequel] I passed on seven times, but they had an option on me, and I had to do the movie,” Tatum said. “So the second one, I obviously just didn’t want to do that one either.”
Tatum noted that he asked to be killed off within the first 10 minutes of the 2013 sequel, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” Dwayne Johnson instead led the follow-up film as Roadblock.

Exclusive: Cain Joshua Storey and Darrell Lee Clark were exonerated this week for the murder of their friend in 1996 thanks to the Proof podcast.
Their story is now set to be turned into a true-crime television series.
Susan Simpson and Jacinda Davis are the creators and hosts of Proof, which uncovered evidence of police misconduct in the case of the two Georgia men, who were convicted of the murder of Brian Bowling when they were teenagers.
Over 17 episodes of their podcast and a year investigating the case, the pair discovered a succession of misinformation and procedural mishaps, including the mishandling of evidence and lack of an autopsy lead to Storey and Clark being sentenced to life in prison for a crime that had initially been ruled an accidental death due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Will Smith was quiet for some time after slapping Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards, but now since he’s on the promotional circuit for his latest movie, he’s going to have to confront it. And that’s what he did when he sat down with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show this week.
In an attempt to explain his actions, Will Smith said in part, “I was gone, dude…That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time…You just never know what somebody is going through…I was going through something that night…That doesn’t justify my behavior at all.”
He went on trying to liken himself to Superman, saving his damsel in distress. Still, pulling back, Smith said, “I’m a flawed human and I still have an opportunity to go out in the world and contribute in a way...

Today is Veterans Day, a day where we celebrate those who lived and died serving the country. I joined the U.S. Air Force in 2008, and lived and traveled throughout Europe and Asia, and completed one deployment. I had some incredible experiences and made some lifelong friends. But one thing I cherish most is getting to cultivate an unmatched love of cinema in addition to honing my skills as an entertainment writer.
In 2013, I began writing for a site called Moviepilot while I was stationed in Virginia, and wrote my first film review for Riddick. Immediately upon publishing, I was bombarded with messages about how I don’t know sh*t about action cinema, and “women shouldn’t be reviewing action movies.” My first experience taught me a lot about audience interaction and internet harassment over opinions.
I continued to write for various smaller sites while serving in the military, but transitioning out was even harder.

It’s no secret that Will Smith’s reputation has taken a big hit after he slapped presenter Chris Rock during the Academy Awards broadcast over the comedian’s “GI Jane” joke about the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
However, one person who’s proven to have Smith’s back is boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.
During a recent London screening of his upcoming film “Emancipation”, Smith revealed that Mayweather called him the day after the Oscars — and then continued to call for 10 consecutive days.

“If we got rid of every gay man in the military, there would be no military,” a sympathetic officer tells Marine recruit Ellis French in “The Inspection.” That’s an exceptionally open-minded take on the United States’ “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, seeing as how pretty much everyone else French encounters at boot camp is openly hostile to there being a gay man among them. But writer-director Elegance Bratton made it through the system — like the character, he’d been lost and homeless for a decade before enlisting — and this deeply personal narrative debut is one gay Black man’s way of showing how he not only survived the experience, but was strengthened by it. “The few, the proud,” as they say.

Comedian Chris Rock has tagged Hollywood star Will Smith’s online apology for slapping him at the Oscars as “hostage video”.
The 57-year-old comic made the statement during another of his stand-up sets alongside Dave Chappelle as part of the pair’s new joint comedy tour, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Referring to 53-year-old Smith’s apology video released in July, Chris said, “F*** your hostage video”.
The comic also used the set to refer to Will as “Suge Smith”, in reference to the thuggish and imprisoned Death Row Records executive Suge Knight.
Rock told fans, who attended his and Dave’s performance at Liverpool’s M and S Arena, Will had managed to do an impersonation of a “perfect man for 30 years” before showing he is “just as ugly as the rest of us”.
This is the first time the comic had extensively shared his feelings about being slapped by Will at this year’s Oscars.

Comedian Chris Rock claims Will Smith managed to pretend to be a “perfect man for 30 years” before revealing he is “just as ugly as the rest of us”. During a gig with fellow stand-up Dave Chappelle at Liverpool’s M and S Arena on the first night of their joint multi-date tour, the comic, 57, finally shared his extensive feelings about being slapped by the 53-year-old actor at this year’s Oscars, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“Did that s*** hurt?” Chappelle, asked Rock in front of the crowd, prompting Chris to exclaim, “Goddam right… the mother***** hit me over a bulls*** joke – the nicest joke I ever told. Will did the impression of a perfect person for 30 years, and he ripped his mask off and showed us he was as ugly as the rest of us.”
“Whatever the consequences are… I hope he doesn’t put his mask back on again, and lets his real face breathe.

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle recently kicked off their joint comedy tour in Liverpool, England at the M&s Bank Arena, and the two comedians held nothing back while addressing the 2022 Oscar incident where Will Smith slapped Rock across the face. Rock was presenting an award and made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head, angering Will Smith since Pinkett Smith has alopecia. Rock said during his Liverpool set that he got slapped for “a bullshit joke” (via Daily Mail UK).

Chris Rock told a crowd in Phoenix on Sunday that he was asked to host the Oscars ceremony for next year after he infamously was slapped by Will Smith during the show, but that he turned the invitation down.
Rock joked during his stand-up set, according to the Arizona Republic, that returning to the Oscars stage would be like returning to the scene of a crime. And he made a reference to the Oj Simpson murder trial, saying that it would be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson “to go back to the restaurant.”
Rock also said he has since been offered the chance to appear in a Super Bowl commercial but also turned down that request.
A representative for the Film Academy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Will Smith has broken his silence and openly apologized to Chris Rock, posting an emotional video Friday in which he goes through a series of questions addressing his slap of Rock on the Oscars stage just minutes before he would win the Best Actor Oscar.
Smith said that he reached out to Rock but received a message in return that Rock will reach out when he’s ready to talk.
“I apologize to you, my behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk,” the “King Richard” actor said. “There is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment. There is no part of me that thinks that’s the optimal way to handle a feeling of disrespect or insult.”

Vivica A. Fox has dismissed Jada Pinkett Smith’s first comments on husband Will Smith’s slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars as “self-righteous,” saying Jada and Will have failed to “take accountability” for their actions.
On Thursday’s “The Wendy Williams Show,” Fox, who has co-starred with both, was in tears as she said that Jada’s “Red Table Talk” on Wednesday — in which “The Matrix Revolutions” star called for the two men to “heal, talk this out and reconcile” — fell short of her expectations.
“This is going to be difficult for me. These are my peers. I’ve done a movie with both of them. ‘Set It Off’ with Jada and ‘Independence Day’ with Will Smith, which absolutely changed my life. When I saw this video last night, it made me cry, I’ll be very honest with you guys,” Fox said in a clip shared to Instagram.

Bill Maher used a pointer to illustrate his lecture Friday night on HBO’s Real Time, as he gave a “Zapruder-ized” analysis of the Oscars moment that everyone can’t let go.
Maher called the segment, “Explaining Jokes to Idiots” and said he would break down jokes for the humor-impaired (a Will Smith shot accompanying).
“Comedians have been under attack for some time,” Maher said. “So I must defend my tribe. This war on jokes must end.” He contended that the infamous “G.I. Jane 2” quip from Chris Rock “wasn’t an alopecia joke, any more than the chicken crossing the road is about bird flu.”
Maher pointed out an earlier joke on Oscars night where Timothée Chalamet was teased for looking a little run-down, with the cameras quickly cutting to J.K. Simmons in the Oscar audience. “That’s where it ended,” Maher said. “It’s called being a good sport.

Will Smith has been barred from the Oscars for 10 years as a consequence of him slapping presenter Chris Rock during the Oscars ceremony last month, the Motion Picture Academy ruled Friday.
The Academy’s Board of Governors also accepted the actor’s resignation as a member. However, the board did not rule Smith ineligible to receive nominations — or Oscars.
“This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy,” the Academy said Friday in a statement. “We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted.”
The Academy also apologized for how it handled the immediate aftermath of Smith’s slap.
“During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room,” the Academy’s statement said.

Ricky Gervais defended Chris Rock’s Oscars joke in controversial fashion. The comedian, who is no stranger to provoking celebrities at awards shows thanks to his five-year stint hosting the Golden Globes, said Rock’s joke at the 94th Academy Awards that resulted in Will Smith slapping him wasn’t even that offensive. Gervais then proceeded to joke about disabilities.
Rock’s Oscars joke revolved around the comedian telling Jada Pinkett Smith he was excited to see her star in a “G.I. Jane” sequel because of her shaved bald head. Ridley Scott’s “G.I. Jane” memorably featured Demi Moore sporting a shaved head. Pinkett Smith has alopecia, which causes hair loss, and she shaved her head last December.
“You don’t hit people over a joke, however bad it is. And it wasn’t bad! That was like the tamest joke I would ever have told,” Gervais said during a...

This year’s Oscars ceremony turned into a media circus after Will Smith slapped guest presenter Chris Rock for making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith‘s hair, alluding to the actress making a sequel to the Ridley Scott film “G.I. Jane.” Since then, Smith has made multiple apologies and even resigned his membership in The Academy. Now, a longtime friend, co-worker, and connoisseur of explosions, violence, and mayhem has chimed in.

Grammy Awards host Trevor Noah didn’t let the opportunity to joke about Will Smith’s infamous Oscars slap of Chris Rock pass him by during Sunday night’s ceremony.
The “Daily Show” host and Grammys emcee opened the 64th Grammys with a passing reference to the controversy.
“Don’t even think of this as an award show,” Noah said about the Grammys. “It’s a concert where we are giving out awards, we will be listening to music, dancing, sing, keeping people’s names out of our mouths and we are going to give people awards all throughout the night. So let’s get straight into it.”
At the 2022 Oscars on March 27, Smith walked up to the stage and slapped Rock across the face after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s appearance. Upon returning to his seat, Smith shouted at Rock to “keep my wife...

The “Saturday Night Live” cold open may have danced around Will Smith’s Oscar antics, but Weekend Update certainly did not. Hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che didn’t hold back, tearing into the actor for slapping Chris Rock on stage.
They also didn’t waste any time. The anchors kicked things off with jokes about the slap, with Michael Che arguing that, with as much as the public knows about the Smiths’ personal life, it was unfair to expect Chris Rock to remember she has alopecia.
“During his acceptance speech, Will Smith said love will make you do crazy things. You know what else makes you do crazy things? Crazy,” Che said. “But I understand where Will’s coming from. I mean, you can’t expect him to sit there and watch another man jump all over his wife — without signing an NDA.”

Will Smith is saying goodbye to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the star is resigning from the membership of the Academy less than a week after he courted controversy by slapping Chris Rock during the Oscars telecast.
“I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct," Smith said in a statement.
"My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable," it continues.
"The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” Smith added in the statement.
“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work."
"I am heartbroken.
