Alcohol consumption data for 2016 is in — and Americans are definitely turning to the bottle.
The country drank 3.5 million fewer nine-liter cases of alcohol overall in 2016 than it did the year before, with total consumption down to about 3.39 billion cases last year, according to the annual Iwsr Us Beverage Alcohol Review. But the volume of wine and liquor bought both increased, especially for whisky, tequila and cognac.
Overall, people bought 2.6% more distilled spirits last year, bringing the total to more than 220 million nine-liter cases. Wine volume sold also increased. But beer dipped slightly, something the study attributed to current trends of...

The Boondock Saints may not be the most instantly recognizable film out there, but it’s got a very loyal following and for good reason. Fans will know full well just what an enjoyable, wild, Tarantino-esque, action romp it is, but unfortunately, critics didn’t quite see things the same way, as they panned it upon release. In the years since, though, it’s gone on to become a firm cult classic and even spawned a sequel in 2009. Admittedly, the second outing was a far cry from the first, but it had its moments and ever since, people have been crying out for another tale featuring vigilante twin brothers Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy MacManus (Norman Reedus).
While another feature film is what fans want to see most, it looks like they’re going to have to settle for a small screen take on the story, as original director...

There’s no better time than now to enjoy Irish whiskey in all forms, including in dessert. St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, so I whipped up some boozy chocolate bliss to celebrate.
Have you ever had a rum ball around the holidays? The idea is quite simple.

I finally did it: I saw U2 in concert.
I may have waited too long to catch the band in its prime, but its 37 years of experience -- without a personnel change -- and undiluted passion have made it one of the biggest concert draws for decades now, even if recent albums have been uneven in inspiration.
The current tour, with Thursday night being the next-to-last of eight shows at Madison Square Garden, is promoting last year's Songs of Innocence, which I mostly like. It figured that the annoying album opener, "The Miracle of Joey Ramone" (I wrote that it "panders like a commercial") would also be the concert opener (unless you want to give that honor to Patti Smith's recording "People Have the Power," which at all those shows is the song the quartet has walked on to, coming through the audience and climbing onstage). Alan prepares to be "immortalized" in cement for the theater's walk of fame.
On Monday night, Cinema Retro was invited to attend a private party in honor of actor Alan Cumming at New York's legendary and quirky Theatre 80 St. Marks on St. Marks Place. The venue has its own mini "walk of fame" that dates back many decades. The Theatre/bar also houses the Museum of the American Gangster, as it once had a sordid history that included a gangland rubout. Alan Cumming graciously signed the cement block, having been introduced by the theater's owner Lorcan Otway and actress Arlene Dahl. After the party, everyone thundered to the famed bar, where plenty of good brews and live Irish music (and Irish whiskey) rounded out the evening.

Washington, February 23: Are you fond of Irish whiskey but refrain from indulging it because of all the stories surrounding it? Here are some of the myths about it that are far from the truth.
Jack McGarry from New York's acclaimed The Dead Rabbit has revealed that the belief that Jameson is Catholic and Bushmills is Protestant is absolutely unfounded, the Huffington Post reported.
McGarry, who was named 'International Bartender of the Year' at last July's Tales of the Cocktail conference, said that the myth that Scotch is better than Irish whiskey is false and it entire depends on personal preference.
Its is believed that Irish whiskey is only good for shots, but the truth is that it also works in a number of cocktails.

The director recalled in 1988 how food can influence a character's development
In 1988 director Mike Leigh welcomed me into his Wood Green home with an "I'll put the kettle on". Tea abounds in his dramas: there were 29 references to it in 1980's Grown-Ups. It's also a tool when developing characters with actors ("How would she brew?"). That night, Leigh prepared our teas with a shrug and smile, remarking on a cheque for 5p his wife (Alison Steadman) had received from the BBC.
Leigh arranged a small plate of bourbon, digestive and Nice biscuits. "I might ask an actor, 'Has your character ever eaten a Mr Kipling cake?' An obvious example of food informing a character is Keith Pratt in Nuts In May. Keith chewed everything 72 times."

Oh boy, you’re going to need a lot more than the “luck of the Irish” to make it through Red Clover – maybe some Irish whiskey, Irish coffee, or a whole slew of Irish car bombs? The sillier of a mood you’re in for this Celtic horror film the better, because you’re going to have to make your own fun with this one. Suffering from almost every horror cliché in the book, and filled with distractingly laughable performances, director Drew Daywalt’s Leprechaun revival is a curse of its own, haunting viewers with a legend better left buried.
Karen O’Hara (Courtney Halverson) is out hunting with her grandfather (William Devane) when she stumbles upon a bright red four-leaf clover, which she picks out of curiosity – bad idea. Right after plucking the oddly colored clover, a fawn-like being emerges from the ground, and Karen finds a strange marking on her hand.

On the 100th episode of Burn Notice - "Forget Me Not" - a ruggedly scruff-looking Michael found himself back in Miami with Strong.
Their goal? Stop Dexter Gamble after he discovered that Michael is actually still working for the CIA.
It feels like our hero has a long road of ahead of him before he'll be comfortable in Miami again. Watching Michael and Madeline in the parking garage absolutely tore me apart. I hate seeing the latter in pain and fear and I really hate to see her and Michael fighting.
Michael’s current situation is doing nothing but scaring and hurting his mother. But at least she got to hug him before she left. I hope she can forgive him when he finally returns.
Then you have Michael’s friends, Sam and Jesse, who were quick to forgive their pal and offer their help, while Fiona is clearly still in pain.

St. Patrick’s Day is coming up this weekend, and we know everyone is looking for any excuse to drink some green beer or slam a few shots of Irish whiskey. Sure, we could enjoy a few drinks to Darby O’Gill and the Little People, but why not celebrate with a true cinematic classic like 1993’s Leprechaun? There have been six Leprechaun films to date, and honestly, this game could work for almost all of them to a degree. However, it’s Warwick Davis’ original turn as the offensive Irish stereotype that is most enjoyable. Cheers, and Éirinn go Brách! And now, to cover our butts… This game is only for people over the age of 21. Please drink responsibly, and don’t even try to watch Leprechaun in Da Hood before you start drinking. Suggested drink: Green beer Take A Drink When… The Leprechaun rhymes Someone goes up or down stairs The Leprechaun bites or scratches...

(And no, I’m not suggesting this just because I want to see Michael Bolton perform at the Academy Awards again.)
As you may or may not know, Andy Samberg hosted the Independent Spirit Awards last Saturday. Granted, this annual celebration of independent film isn’t nearly as formal as the Oscars — it’s held in a boho-chic tent on a beach in Santa Monica, for one thing, and this year’s ceremony seated attendees at tables overflowing with drinks provided by sponsor Jameson Irish Whiskey. The ceremony also isn’t quite on the same level as the Oscars or the Golden Globes.

David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook” swept the Film Independent Spirit Awards this afternoon in Santa Monica on the beach. Russell won Best Director and Adapted Screenplay, Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress, the film won Best Picture. It was quite a moment for this little romantic comedy with serious underpinnings. The only big award lost was Bradley Cooper, who was just as pleased to see veteran John Hawkes pick up Best Actor for “The Sessions.” Helen Hunt won Best Supporting Actress for “The Sessions” as well. And “The Invisible War” won Best Documentary. “Amour” won Best Foreign Language Film. Andy Samberg was sort of brilliant as host of the show, which airs tonight on the IFC Channel. He gave a classy tip of the hat to long time show host John Waters. The Spirit Awards run much fast now as they are taped without commercials, then show the same evening.

Katy Perry and her Grammy Awards date, Girls star Allison Williams, made it a couples' affair at the Warner Music Group after-party. Perry reunited with beau John Mayer while Williams reconnected with boyfriend Ricky Van Veen as the group later huddled with Selena Gomez, who arrived around 1 a.m., and Lana Del Rey for early morning drinks at West Hollywood's Chateau Marmont Hotel. The party, where guests were offered Prosecco and Heineken beers, along with shrimp, quiche and sliders, was sponsored by Mini and put on by InStyle magazine (which, like People, is part of Time Inc.). It’s no surprise that you can get away with some pretty insane things when you’re famous. That’s half the fun, right!? Celebrities have been putting outrageously specific and expensive demands in their contracts since Van Halen pulled their infamous “No Brown M&Ms” stunt back in the early 80s. We’d thought we had heard ‘em all, but Lady Gaga’s request for a “a mannequin with puffy pink pubic hair” in her dressing room caught us a little off guard!
Mother Monster’s full list of backstage requests has recently come to light due to her on-going lawsuit with former assistant Jennifer O’Neill, and it’s even more nuts than you might have expected. In addition to the nude mannequin, she required the following on her 2010 Monster’s Ball World Tour: “Glam rock, Black, Silver statins dropped over walls Old Rock Posters from her favorite artists Bowie,...

The year could not be going better for soothing folk act Bon Iver, who took home two Grammys back in February for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album for their self-titled 2011 effort. Heck, frontman Justin Vernon has even found himself as a spokesman for Bushmills Irish Whiskey and the subject of a popular jokey Tumblr called "Bon Iver Erotic Stories."
Things are going so well for Bon Iver in fact, that the band has added seven additional U.S. dates to their run in September, including Boston, Providence and Philly. With the addition of two shows at Radio City Music Hall, the tour also now boasts four consecutive nights at the iconic New York City venue. The dates were added after the September 19 and 20 shows immediately sold out.

Contrary to his "Parks and Recreation" character Ron Swanson's trademark no-nonsense stance toward digging in deep and talking about his feelings, it is clearly difficult for actor Nick Offerman to reel in his nostalgia for Chicago, the city where his acting career first took wind.
The Minooka, Ill.-born actor, who now calls Los Angeles home, has earned a cultish following over his four seasons on the NBC series centered on Leslie Knope and her crew of Pawnee, Ind., bureaucrats. And with the show only gaining in popularity, that following shows no sign of dissipating any time soon.
In advance of a pair of performances of his one-man "American Ham" show Saturday in Chicago as part of the Just For Laughs festival, HuffPost Chicago spoke with Offerman about his early acting days, Cubs fandom and, of course, the iconic libertarian character who is at least partially responsible for sparking a nationwide facial hair revolution.

Everything kicks off tomorrow, but the dealmaking has already begun at the Cannes Film Festival and Harvey Weinstein is already busy shaking hands and signing contracts.
Variety reports that The Weinstein Company has landed a chunk of worldwide rights, including North America of course, for Wayne Blair's "The Sapphires" starring Chris O'Dowd. No, this isn't a raunchy comedy, but instead, the Aussie flick is based on a true story of a girl group in the 1960s made up of four Aboriginal girls who entertain the U.S. troops in Vietnam. War? Music? Period drama? Sounds like it's hitting all the right notes for the Weinsteins. The film is screening out of competition, but with the Weinsteins giving it a stamp of approval, the previously under the radar flick will now get some extra shine. Here's the official synopsis -- you can check out a clip from the film below...

San Francisco is a haven for hipsters (pop on over to Dolores Park on a Saturday to see for yourself), so it’s unsurprising the city would be featured first in a new series profiling that very culture.
San Francisco-based production studio Seedwell launched a new series on YouTube last month aptly named "The American Hipster." The channel airs three hipster-themed shows every week.
(Scroll Down For Video)
"Many people think the whole hipster thing is over," said Peter Furia, creative director of Seedwell, in a statement. "But the fact that the term is still so contentious makes us think there's substance to explore. We also suspect there's new humor to enjoy as hipsterism's influence expands further into the mainstream and crosses generations."
American Hipster Presents, a documentary style show, explores important themes in Hipster culture: music, art, style, food and social life in five episodes each for ten different cities throughout the country.

There's been a slew of themed film events cropping up in the past decade: quirky, unique evenings filling the void left by soulless, sticky-carpeted multiplexes, one of the most prominent being the Jameson Cult Film Club (Jcfc). The Irish whiskey brand have made it their mission to be a friend to cinemagoers, sponsoring the Dublin International Film Festival and the recent Empire Magazine Awards, and their Cult Film Club, now in its fourth year, is going from strength to strength.

The film world's love affair with Michael Fassbender is unending. This weekend the gifted Kerryman picked up the Hero Award at the Jameson Empire Film Awards, an industry bash which took place at London's Grosvenor Hotel. Fassbender, dressed in jeans, an open shirt and a form fitting blazer, won the award for his role as Magneto in the highly entertaining X-Men: First Class. 'This is kind of unusual, because the first job I wanted to do was be Superman, so a hero award is official now,' Fassbender said as he accepted the trophy. According to the Herald it was a big night for the Irish, with 20-year-old Irish actress Evanna Lynch watching the film in which she starred Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two take home the top prize for Best Film. The County Louth native played Luna Lovegood, the eccentric but utterly brilliant young heroine, in...
