Thirty years after the death of Kurt Cobain, the BBC will air a documentary that it says will “demystify” the Generation X icon and grunge music legend. Moments That Shook the Music: Kurt Cobain, a feature-length documentary directed by John Osborne and produced by Touchdown Films, airs Saturday, April 13, on BBC iPlayer and BBC 2, as part of programming entirely dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Cobain’s death. The Nirvana frontman died on April 5, 1994, in what was ruled a suicide.
“This documentary aims to demystify that moment and tell the story in a direct and accurate way with footage shot by the people who were there,” said Osborne in an interview with the BBC. “Kurt Cobain was the reluctant voice of a generation and his death has left a huge void. The only way to make sense of what happened is to make a testimony that audiences won’t be able to stop watching.

This documentary follows Dalton Harris whose storming 2018 triumph left him fearing failure and facing homophobic abuse, especially in his native Jamaica
This documentary, co-directed by Kim Longinotto and Scottish film-maker Franky Murray Brown, is a complex, intimate, sober look at someone making it in the music business, or maybe not making it, or maybe making it in something more important instead. It is candid about something rarely acknowledged in the life of any performer: the day-to-day, minute-by-minute dread of failure, of simply one day falling off the high-wire.
Dalton Harris is the superbly gifted young Jamaican singer who, in 2018, won TV’s The X Factor, after a struggle that included singing bizarre Nirvana covers on a cruise ship. The clip of him storming The X Factor audition with his version of Elton John’s Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word is almost worth the admission price. Dalton duly got a precarious year’s contract.

It’s no secret that George Clooney has a disdain-hate relationship with his version of Batman, having starred as the Caped Crusader in 1997’s Batman & Robin. But there might be someone else who brushes off his take more than anybody else: his own son!
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, George Clooney recalled a moment when his son laid it out as only a kid can. “My son’s in love with Batman, right? He’s in love with Batman. That’s all he talks about is Batman. And I’m like, ‘You know I was Batman?’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah, not anymore.’ He has no idea how right he is!…How do you tell your six-year-old son that Batman had nipples? How do you do that?!” For what it’s worth, those nipples landed that get-up a starting bid of $40,000 on the auction block.

For a music journalist in the Nineties, there could have been no better phone call. Not long after Michael Azerrad hung out with Kurt Cobain for Nirvana’s first Rolling Stone cover story, Courtney Love reached out to ask him if he wanted to write a book about Nirvana. He agreed, and after nine months of breakneck work, he managed to get Come As You Are out in 1993, just in time to coincide with Nirvana’s Nevermind follow-up, In Utero.

A new deluxe reissue of Nirvana’s In Utero, is out today (October 27th) to coincide with the album’s 30th anniversary.
The original In Utero arrived after Nirvana had already become global superstars, and is thematically characterized by the band’s discomfort with their status, particularly from frontman, Kurt Cobain. Celebrating it on the occasion of its 25th anniversary in 2018, Consequence contributor Ryan Bray praised the album as “arguably the truest representation of what Nirvana was: a massive act with the principles and integrity of one half its size… It’s a difficult but ironclad document of artistic bravery.”
Now, the album is being honored in a whole new fashion. Among the 53 unreleased tracks are two full In Utero-era concerts, including the band’s final performance in Seattle, as well as six bonus live tracks recorded at various shows around the same time. Additionally, the album’s original tracklist,...

If you read that headline and thought to yourself, "Who the hell is Nate Bargatze?", then allow me to direct you over to Netflix to check out his stand-up specials "The Tennessee Kid" and "The Greatest Average American," or head over to Amazon Prime Video to watch "Hello World" from just earlier this year. They're all hilarious, and they'll make you fall in love with him.
Over the past few years, Nate Bargatze has become a new favorite on the stand-up scene thanks to his wry delivery and sensible yet hilarious perspectives. Making him significantly more appealing to a broader audience than some of the other big stand-up comics out there is the fact that Bargatze is one of the rare comedians who works clean and doesn't rely on any profanity, vulgarity, or blue material. However, he might end up getting a little more edgy when he stops by a...

From the moment he was cast, it was clear that Robert Pattinson would be a totally new kind of Batman. Rumors that the "Twilight" alumni would star in the latest leg of the franchise set the internet ablaze, but luckily, widespread speculation didn't hurt his chances of starring in Matt Reeves' 2022 film, "The Batman." Pattinson's audition went so well that it instantly landed him the part, but that wasn't all. His screen test was so effective that it directly inspired a scene in the movie.
Pattinson might seem like an odd choice for the typically stoic and raspy-voiced Dark Knight, but Reeves had a totally new vision for Batman. This Bruce Wayne would not be a buttoned-up businessman, blending in seamlessly to high society. Rather, he would be an emo overgrown teenager still reeling from the death of his parents. Bruce's status as an orphan has always defined him and motivated him to fight crime,...

The members of Boygenius made a bold statement during their performance in Tennessee on Sunday. The band’s Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker hit the stage dressed in drag queen makeup and looks as they made a statement about the state governor’s anti-lgbtq stances with a chant of “F–ck Bill Lee.”

One of the things we love most about the dark Showtime series “Yellowjackets” is all the fantastic ’90s music. Half of the show takes place in 1996, when high school girls’ soccer team crash lands in the wilderness and half is set 25 years later, with the still traumatized adult survivors.
Season 2 features an exclusive track by Florence + the Machine, an eerie cover of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl,” Sharon Van Etten’s “Seventeen,” and such ’90s feminist icons as Tori Amos.
And of course, we love the kind of creepy main title theme, “No Return,” by Craig Wedren and Anna Waronker. The opening credits from Season 1 teased some of the things we would see unfold, and the updated Season 2 credits sequence also gives us hints at what we’ll see in upcoming episodes.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Yellowjackets, Season 2 Episode 8, “It Chooses.”]
After a riveting first season filled with sonic callbacks to the ’90s, Season 2 of Showtime’s Yellowjackets kicked off with a similarly wistful tone, thanks to the new trailer, spotlighting Florence and the Machine’s cover of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl.”
Season 1 of the series took viewers back to 1996 when a young group of soccer players survives a plane crash and the aftermath forced the characters to deal with a string of psychologically unfortunate events. Considering when the story starts, music from the era is paramount to the series. So far, we’ve heard everything from Portishead’s “Glory Box” to “Rump Shaker” by Wreckx-n-Effect in the series, with Season 2 promising to keep that same energy while jumping in between timelines.

Kieran Culkin and Jennifer Coolidge were set to host the final two episodes of the season before the writers strike forced an end to season 48 of the venerable NBC show.
It comes after the Pete Davidson-hosted episode on May 6 was pulled as a result of the strike.
It means that the Ana De Armas-hosted episode on April 15 was the show’s season finale and the network will air repeats.
Succession star Culkin was set to host May 13 and The White Lotus star Coolidge was set to host the finale on May 20.
British musician Labrinth, who wrote the score for the first season of HBO’s Euphoria, was set as the musical guest for Culkin’s episode, while Foo Fighters were set to close out Coolidge’s episode.

The late Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan was close friends with Kurt Cobain during the latter’s lifetime. Cobain performed on Lanegan’s debut solo album, and anecdotes from Lanegan’s memoir illustrated just how tight the two grunge artists were.
It turns out their collaborative efforts apparently went both ways. In the new biographical oral history, Lanegan, the singer’s former Queens of the Stone Age bandmate Nick Oliveri revealed that Mark helped write lyrics for Nirvana’s stark masterpiece “Something in the Way,” but went uncredited. Therefore Lanegan — who often struggled to make ends meet while coping with drug addiction — didn’t receive what would have been massive royalties for the sales of Nirvana’s mega-selling album Nevermind.
“Mark said he wrote some lyrics on ‘Something in the Way’ with Kurt on Nevermind,” Oliveri told author Greg Prato. “But Kurt had played on some of Mark’s solo stuff,...

Actor, producer & philanthropist Lakshmi Manchu who is in the middle of the post production of her film ‘Agninakshatram’ and preparing for her annual fund raiser fashion show has surprised us with a song. A solo track titled ‘Nirvanashatakam’, which is an ode to Lord Shiva. Lakshmi released the song on occasion of Maha Shivratri.
Shot in the holy ghats of Varanasi, Nirvanashatakam, is an expression of Lakshmi’s love for Shiva. Adi Shankara Charya is the original creator of the song Nirvana Shatakam also known as Atma Shatakam. The advancement of artificial intelligence has likely been on everyone's minds over the past few weeks. From apps that use your personal data to generate edited selfies, to major companies pivoting to AI-generated content, there's been a big question about whether popular media will pivot to content produced by machines rather than living creatives. If we can be so easily replaced by machines, is our creativity even worth maintaining?
According to Keanu Reeves, the answer to that question is a resounding yes. The actor, who may know a thing or two about artificial intelligence taking over the world, recently spoke to Wired to promote the upcoming "John Wick: Chapter 4" with director Chad Stahelski. By happenstance, the interview shifted to a discussion of AI usage in film. Nirvana was one of the most popular bands of the 1990s, but their meteoric rise halted following the death of lead singer Kurt Cobain. The band disbanded after that, and many wondered if the grunge group would reunite. In 2012, Paul McCartney was fortunate enough to play in a Nirvana reunion with Dave Grohl, but he had no idea he was playing with the original band members.

Dave Grohl, now the lead singer of Foo Fighters, directed and produced 2013’s Sound City, a documentary about Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, Los Angeles. Grohl also recorded an accompanying soundtrack for the documentary, featuring one song called “Cut Me Some Slack.”
The song contains a Nirvana reunion with Krist Novoselic on bass guitar, Pat Smear on guitar, and Grohl on the drums.

The first thing you notice while watching Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream is David Bowie’s teeth. He smiles a lot. The Thin White Duke, and leader of the Spiders from Mars, is known as a serious artist. Yes, he sang “chubby little loser, national joke” to Ricky Gervais on Extras; mined Bikini Bottom humor for SpongeBob SquarePants; and was certainly happy to make lots of money dancing the blues in his red shoes, but the majority of Bowie’s works, both on screen and audio, are serious studies. Towards the end of the documentary, we hear Bowie say he always thought himself an adventurer, praying for the most exciting life one could have. Morgen shows the artist enjoyed himself immensely, possibly even more than Bowie fans.

Adele has expressed her gratitude after winning her first Emmy Award on Sunday (4 September), and made a joke about being close to the coveted “Egot” status.

When Romeo Santos became the first Latino artist to sell out two consecutive shows at Yankees Stadium in 2014, it was clear he was a force to be reckoned with. Starting with his teenage days in the New York City-based band Aventura, the singer’s youthful falsetto and seductive flow has helped bring the decades-old Dominican style to soaring new heights over the years. The genre, which has roots in Afro-Dominican barrios, has been derided by the nation’s elites in the past, but Santos became a sensation and brought the...

Brett Morgen Had a Heart Attack Making ‘Moonage Daydream’ — and Credits David Bowie for His Recovery
Documentarian Brett Morgen has tangled with rock legends before, with “Cobain: Montage of Heck” and Rolling Stones doc “Crossfire Hurricane,” but when he landed the plum assignment of directing the first officially sanctioned David Bowie documentary feature, he had no idea what he was in for. Finishing the movie took five years of absorbing Bowie’s massive archive by himself, tracking down hi-res footage and music stems suitable for IMAX and Dolby Atmos showings, and editing all alone during a pandemic. No wonder Morgen suffered a heart attack and wound up in a coma.
He insists that it was all for the best and turned him from a child-man into an adult — and that Bowie’s philosophical musings on art and life enabled him to complete the movie. To chart Bowie’s creative, musical, and spiritual journey, Morgen dug into a kaleidoscope of never-before-seen 16 and 35mm performance footage and movies,...

Through all his hazy cosmic jive, David Bowie was always presented as a Starman, waiting in the sky for the right moment to blow our minds. Times have caught up with the legendary Thin White Duke, and one of the signs is a stellar alignment. If the stars look different, it is because there was an unforeseen conjunction. Neon Film’s immersive documentary Moonage Daydream premiered at Cannes this week as did Showtime’s The Man Who Fell to Earth’s newest episode, entitled “Moonage Daydream.”
In the series, K. Faraday (Chiwetel Ejiofor), is the home planet help requested by Thomas Jerome Newton, the character Bowie played in Nicholas Roeg’s 1976 film. The drone protégé of the mysterious Anthean scientist suffers an existential crisis and finds inspiration through a base human instinct. Moonage Daydream documents Bowie’s career with the most human touch. It is narrated by Bowie, himself, through...

One of Kurt Cobain’s most beloved guitars, seen in Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video, sold for 4.5 million at auction Sunday in New York, Julien’s Auctions announced.
The guitar — a 1969 Fender Competition Mustang in a color known as Lake Placid Blue that was owned by the Cobain family — was previously displayed as part of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay’s extensive collection of rock memorabilia prior to the auction, the Associated Press previously reported. On Sunday, it was the Jim Irsay Collection that ultimately made the winning...

Nirvana is not quite to Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” as Prince was to Tim Burton’s 1989 version of “Batman.” But even with only one oldie being used instead of an entire new song score, the new film is being identified with primarily one musician, thanks to Kurt Cobain’s “Something in the Way” appearing at prominent beginning and end points in the film as well as being alluded to in the score.
So the gloomy-sounding song is experience something in the way of a comeback even outside of theaters, not surprisingly. As of this Friday afternoon writing, a week after the film’s release, “Something in the Way” sits at No. 3 on Spotify’s daily ranking of the top 50 streaming songs in the U.S., with 803,000 plays for the day, just behind the No. 1 Glass Animals and another movie-based song at No. 2, “We Don’t Care About Bruno.”

A classic Nirvana song is prominently featured in The Batman (and even has a reprise), but does the catchy track mean more than just building the aesthetic?
“Matt Reeves take on Bruce Wayne has finally hit theaters, and with it comes a dive into the world of Batman and a deeper look into the corrupt nature of Gotham. And one of the fascinating parts of The Batman trailer and subsequently the movie itself is the use of an iconic Nirvana song.”

Good news, Avatar fans, the highly anticipated sequel, once initially set for release in 2014, will finally hit theaters this December with no more delays.
“James Cameron‘s Avatar sequel Avatar 2 was delayed from a 2021 release date to the end of this year, but it now seems that 20th Century Studios is keen on keeping to its holiday release this time around.”

“This picture is perfect, end of review.” That may not be 100 true, but Leo McCarey’s unabashed leap into romantic Nirvana really hasn’t been bettered, although his color & ‘scope remake is very good. Never was smart adult dialogue this winning — Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer’s cinematic courtship is a highlight of the Big Studio years. And Maria Ouspenskaya’s performance will send you out to pamper the nearest grandmother. The restoration for this one is a revelation, as the show has looked terrible for sixty years- plus. Serge Bromberg and Farran Smith Nehme make the extras especially valuable.

“This is our last show,” Dave Grohl announced at the outset of the Foo Fighters’ set Wednesday night at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. There was an awkward silence as the invited audience waited to see if there was a punchline coming or not. And there was: “Because now we’re fucking movie stars,” he declared.
Whether they have a Beatle-esque future in film comedy remains to be seen, but their first feature, “Studio 666,” is certainly light-hearted, in its own satanic way — think of it as “Help!” goes to hell — with a willingness to subject producer-stars who are playing themselves to a bloody body count not often seen since “Penn and Teller Get Killed.”
The after-party concert at the Fonda followed a premiere down the street of the horror-comedy, which has all five Foo Fighters members in starring roles, along with smaller parts or cameos for Whitney Cummings, Will Forte,...

Brett Morgen, the freewheeling director behind “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” “Jane” and “The Kid Stays in the Picture,” is finalizing a top-secret David Bowie project based on thousands of hours of rare performance footage of the musician, most of it previously uncirculated, sources confirm to Variety.
Morgen has been at work on the Bowie film, for which an official title has not been disclosed, for the last four years. A source close to the production cryptically describes it as “neither documentary nor biography, but an immersive cinematic experience built, in part, upon thousands of hours of never before seen material.”
Sources say live concert footage plays a central role in the film, and that Morgen is eyeing an IMAX release. The filmmaker wears a number of hats on the project, taking on editing, writing and producing duties, in addition to directing.
A Sundance Film Festival premiere in late January could be in the cards.

If, like some of us, you’re not completely caught up on the ongoing dramas within HBO’s popular super-rich family drama “Succession,” have no fear because there’s no spoilers here except to say that in season three, skullduggery continues, and Nirvana’s controversial 1993 song “Rape Me” was used in a pivotal scene last weekend.
Cobain’s widow, erstwhile Hole singer Courtney Love, approves Nirvana syncs and, according to an Instagram story post, she seems quite pleased with the show’s use of the song, saying it is “as if they truly understood” what Cobain meant with the song, and that “I’m sure wherever he is he’s proud of this.”
Her message follows in full:
“I was in the room watching (agog) as this song was written in about an hour , and I’ve never been so proud of approving one of Kurt’s songs , this cue...

The Oscar-nominated film director has made the jump into musical theatre with a portrait of the high priest of pop art, staged in Europe
In 1982, a 30-year-old Gus Van Sant was taking a stroll in New York on his lunch break when he spotted a legend. “I saw him walk by the street,” he remembers. “Madison Avenue, across from where I was working in advertising. He was wearing a light blue, lightweight parka and a backpack.” Engrossed in conversation, Warhol didn’t look in Van Sant’s direction but was immediately recognisable. “I was, like, ‘Ok, there’s Warhol!’ He was very easy to spot.” The film-maker’s face creases into a warm smile, incredulous, as he chuckles. “He looked exactly as you see him in pictures.”

It’s not uncommon for people to rethink experiences from their early life. And a lot has changed since 1991, when Nirvana shot the album cover for Nevermind, the sophomore album that catapulted the band into superstardom — and whose image of a baby is now the subject of a lawsuit from that very baby.
That baby is now a grown man: Spencer Elden, now 30, filed a lawsuit this week alleging that the Nevermind cover constitutes child pornography. Psychologically speaking, he has every right to feel overwhelmed by conflicting emotions; a person...

Black Widow is the first Marvel Studios release to have an opening credits sequence since 2010’s Iron Man 2. Which by itself is kind of nice. After all, both movies bookend Scarlett Johansson’s tenure in the role of Natasha Romanoff. Yet when watching the opening moments of Marvel’s latest adventure, the decision to include an ominous montage of young Nat’s childhood after the movie’s brutal cold open is about more than creating symmetry with the past; it fills in the most mysterious Avenger’s blindspots… and reveals the red in her ledger is also our own.
Scored to a haunting cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Black Widow’s opening titles dovetail out from one of the movie’s best moments. With a stripped down prologue devoid of space gods and magic rocks, Black Widow’s first 10 minutes...

I’d be lying if I didn’t say I rather missed that Marvel intro on the big screen. Once that music kicked in and the countless characters that have inhabited this universe flickered across those mighty six letters, it was a warm feeling. A feeling of normality slowly setting back in. And normality would set in over the proceeding two and a bit hours, as this was a Marvel movie, with the usual flaws in place but also those very welcome joys back too. Warning some spoilers lie ahead…
It’s fair to say that Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff (aka Black Widow) has been long overdue her own film, and this should have landed a few years back, especially when you consider the character’s fate as it stands in Avengers: Infinity War. Black Widow has one of the best openings of any MCU movie yet, and I will fight you on that.
The story begins in Ohio, circa 1995, where a young Natasha Romanov is living with her Soviet spy family in quasi-but-not-totally-fake family bliss. The domestic dream ends once Alexei has completed his mission, forcing the family to make a dangerous getaway from the suburbs that ends in a tarmac shootout in which Melina gets shot and pre-teen Natasha has to pilot a plane on her own in order to save her family. Once the family lands safely in Cuba, everything falls apart for Natasha and little sister Yelena. They are drugged and integrated back into the Red Room program, which trains (read: brainwashes) young girls into becoming super spies.

Dave Grohl has had a lot of memorable Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nights during the past decade. In 2013, he donned a kimono and blond wig to induct Rush and rock out with them on “2112.” The next year, Nirvana entered the Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility and he played their music with Krist Novoselic for the first time since Kurt Cobain died in 1994. The year after that, he jammed with Joan Jett and got stoned out of his mind with her and Miley Cyrus afterward.

Ever since Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994, Nirvana fans have hypothesized about the music he would have made had he lived. But other than “You Know You’re Right,” the scabrous, throat-shredding meditation on confusion that Nirvana recorded a few months before his suicide, and a few comments he told confidants about potentially collaborating with R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe or going completely solo, he mainly left behind question marks.
