"Oh, yes, it's Ladies' Night,And the feeling's right."
morrison-dylan-fan5 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Nearing the end of my viewings for a poll on the best films of 1980,I decided to dip into the Golden Age of skin flicks from that year with a double bill. Finding the title from browsing what lor_ had reviewed from the year,I got set to see the ladies go for a night on the town.

View on the film:

Seating all the ladies in one club, director Harry Lewis (who after 1980 would retire from the movie world, and run a camera rental business instead) makes clear that the fantasy sights appearing on the stage, are not in the same location, with Lewis never going for a wide-shot showing the stage and the audience, instead holding to narrow wide-shots looking out to the crowd.

Scoring a goal with Betty's sports-obsessed husband, Lewis thrusts hilariously absurdest Comedy set-pieces in the middle of the steamy action, with Lewis having Betty's partner be so single-minded on sports,he is oblivious to the saucy thrills taking place right next to him, whilst Paul Thomas has a visible grin on his face as the host on stage who sings "As Time Goes By" and "Tonight" from West Side Story (Thomas reveals himself to be a very good "Crooner" ) as the lasses put all their attention to the eye candy on the stage.

Helping Betty get free from her marital frustrations with a scotching hot trio sequence set against a sun streaming across the screen, Annette Haven, Lisa De Leeuw and Nicole Black give wonderful performances, with Black and Leeuw groping their warm friendly support for each other with a alluring raunchy enthusiasm, and Haven brings out a delightful touch of Comedy in Betty's frustrations melting away,as her fantasies come true on ladies night.

Very enjoyable porn programmer from the Lewises

LADIES NIGHT epitomizes the quality of a routine, yet sincere, porn movie made at a time (1980) when no one expected the creative destruction that was soon to come, namely Video!!

Annette Haven stars as a stereotypically neglected housewife -she is introduced in a hot tub with a schlub of a husband who only wants to watch the football game and scream rooting and advice at the screen. Haven has a second TV set up and watches a porn video on VHS right next to him: it's an entertaining stag vignette of Ken Scudder getting serviced by Phaery Burd wearing a black & white referee's uniform.

Haven has a truly classic (and frequently anthologized lesbian threesome with Nicole Noir and Lisa de Leeuw -backlit by sun streaming through the window in a sauna -as sensual as XXX porn could get. Then they get together for the title event coinciding with hubby and the guys at home enjoying Monday Night Football.

Rest of the film takes place at a bar where there is plenty of diversion to make up for the absence of further plot material. Herschel Savage is the bartender, also glued to the TV set to watch football, and the running gag (no pun intended, believe me!) of Laura Lazare (likely her film debut if IMDb credits list is accurate) giving him a blow job from her perch on the floor behind the bar is dragged out for well over half an hour.

A bearded Paul Thomas is the m.c. at the club and is both amusing and entertaining as he belts out (in direct sound performance) snatches of songs ranging from "Feelings" and "As Time Goes By" to "Tonight" from West Side Story. A young Mike Horner is one of the Chippendale dancers for the girls to enjoy, and there's a hot foursome staged in the back-room on a pool table involving De Leeuw and Starr Wood. Noir gets hers from the ubiquitous Jesse Adams out in a car (he's the bar's parking valet), and get a load of that period jumpsuit Adams is wearing.

This is part of a genre I term "lifestyle porn" (a category of my own invention) which dates back to the Sarno films of the '60s and is still popular in videos about 21st Century swingers. It's not about plot, drama, comedy or some genre (roughie/crime/whodunit, etc.), but rather presenting the way sex-loving people live. (Think of the imagery of a sexy gangsta rap music video: bling, hot semi-clad women, expensive rides, etc.)

The dichotomy between couch potato hubby (actor has a non-sex role to boot) and more hedonistic superstar Annette is very well-delineated by director Harry Lewis and producer Elliot Lewis.

A hot night out with Annette Haven and friends
Woodyanders24 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Sexually frustrated housewife Betty (a winningly sassy portrayal by the gorgeous Annette Haven) isn't getting the carnal fulfillment she needs and desires from her football addict husband. Betty decides to rectify the situation by going out with her rowdy gal pals Irene (ravishing redhead Lisa De Leeuw) and Angie (fetching brunette Nicole Black) to a swinging nightclub where bawdy fun and fornication are the order of the day.

Director Harry Lewis keeps the enjoyable story moving along at a snappy pace, maintains an engaging good-natured tone throughout, and further spices things up with an amusing sense of raunchy humor. The sex scenes are quite arousing and energetic, with a lesbian three way between Annette and friends rating as a definite scorching highlight. Paul Thomas contributes a lively and likable turn as a smooth-talking emcee while Herschel Savage has a funny role as a hunky bartender who's being continuously serviced under the bar by the pretty Laura Lazare. The bright cinematography provides an attractive sparkling look. The funky-throbbing score hits the get-down groovy spot. A hugely satisfying and entertaining early 80's hardcore romp.
