Honest image of a symbol
Vincentiu31 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The masterpiece of a actor. Page of Romanian history and lost of usual tags. And, form of subtle description of destiny, sacrifice and hesitation.

Like every historical movie, "Horea" is a power's analysis. The reality before the facts, the words who moves conceptions, revolt and desire and fall.

Ovidiu Iuliu Moldovan is a magnificent actor and, like Transylvanian, Horea is for him more than a historical character. He is the hero with mythical connotations, 'King of Dacia", leader of a movement who transforms rules and destiny, victim of a weak emperor and symbol of freedom. This relationship with his personage is obvious in the subtle acting and in essence of gestures.

"Horea" is a great Romanian movie for the way to tackle the national problem. In Communist era, the nationalism was the first instrument of propaganda. Ceausescu himself - "great hero", " Beloved father" and supreme leader is the toy of a brutal image of a gorgeous past who is in his days the result of Communist Party's work. But "Horea" escapes of Sergiu Nicolaescu recipes, of "Cantarea Romaniei" script. The real facts in that case are not pieces of jingoism or hate legitimation. The result is a poised image of the values of some men and the aspects of a time in a intelligent way.

a complex puzzle. the political power and the man. the challenge of a despotic regime and the answer of people for obtain freedom. the hero as central piece of social wake up. the music, the acting, the half of last decade of Ceaușescu regime. and the courage of director to explore reality using the past figures. because it is not a biopic or eulogy. but a collection of bitter fundamental questions. Horea is the leader but he is more than a model or icon. he is the conscience of a nation looking conquer the national rights, the identity and the old state of the things who gives sense to every day reality. and that does Horia special. and that gives to Ovidiu Iuliu Moldovan the chance to transform his character in symbol. the last dialogue between Horea and his son is the last mark of a splendid and fascinating, not comfortable and honest in profound sense try to redefine the power, national history axis, values and expectations. a puzzle who propose not its solution. but the need to discover each of its pieces as mirrors of essential search of the truth. the music, the sick count Yankovich , the eccentric Kendy, the silhouette of the emperor Joseph, the fragments and pages of an old book preserving the flavor or the flowers inside it. not a manifesto, not a biopic. only a search of the thing who defines a people survive.
