Sex & Nudity

  • I a fleeting scene, a man uses a pen to playfully paint an "f-hole" on a woman buttocks suggesting similarity to a cello. A woman's buttocks are visible in a thong-type undergarment. Scantily dressed prostitutes:A woman's buttocks are visible in a thong-type undergarment. another shows a barely discernible glimpse of a breast thru a sheer upper garment, and is fleeting and barely visible. Prostitution and the main character's presence in a brothel is implied through choice words and commonly-understood images but done so in a "soft" manner and not spoken of directly. A man displays postcards, of nude women, that he has for sale. One scene where hints are given as to the meaning of a song being about an erection, a woman lets her hand run down the front of a man's trousers. As with the other scenes it is not overt or drawn out. Except for "going up stairs" with a prostitute, Sex is not discussed, or shown in any maner. (It appears like all/some of the quick nudity was just over the line for R-rating.)

Violence & Gore

  • Nazi thugs rough up a man giving him a bloody nose and cut on his head. One holds a knife on another. A woman is slapped after she contemptuously spits in a mans face. A man slaps another on the face during an argument for emphasis, but he is not hurt. (Not R-rating violence)

Profanity

  • None. "Jew" used in a derogatory tone (and sometimes not). One instance of "jewish pig". Derogatory statements are written on a shop's windows, but they are not highlighted and are in German. Most will know what they are, but not be able to read the words.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Since it is the 30's, cigarettes and cigars abound. Drinking of champaign, no drunkenness In one scene a very minor character unsuccessfully tries to sell cocaine. In a later scene a woman is seen snorting - cocaine is assumed, but not shown.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • SA troops ("brown shirts") Ransack a store and threaten a women who works there. A man breaks a window to enter and defend her. He is beaten by the Nazis. He walks out with cut head and bloodied nose. Another man is held at bay with a knife.
