Not that bad...
Macholic24 August 2003
Nothing new in this movie if you have seen Blade Runner, Escape From New York and The Matrix, but for a Danish movie it is not that bad. More gory and sombre than you usually sees it. Las Bom is OK as the good guy, Jørgen Kiil is a respectable black hat and the ladies Rørbeck and Scharbau looks great as respectably Miauv and Barbie. The crime intrigue is too easily solved, but then it is Film Noir Sci-Fi, worth a look 5/10

J.B, hacker extraordinaire, retires early and finds excitement sifting through records of medial security breaches.
Autlan16 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
As seems to be the norm, J.B finishes his daily regimen of exercise, leaves his programmed (alter) ego online to do his paid work and sets out to assist his friend/love intrigue Miauv with hers. Her private investigations conveniently peek in, through a camera lens, on one of J.B's colleagues at the moment he's sexed to death. The duo spring into action; but catching the killer proves difficult. An angry ice climber slows the foot chase before it begins and after a brief vehicular distraction the chase tries to return to foot. Here the brazen technophile shows her ineptitude by locking herself in her car, with an over-sized key fob, while the assassin saunters away. All seems lost, but subsequent analysis of the surveillance footage reveals someone well-known was behind the trigger of the murder weapon.

Forcefully summoned to an audience with his boss, Cyberworld domain overlord Stoiss, J.B discovers his other colleague has also met a similar end. Fingered for both of the deaths and the theft of a significant sum of credits from Stoiss' online account; robbed of his online ego and landed with a pair of knuckle-dragging goons and a time bomb pacemaker in place of a flat lined heart; J.B is sent forth into the moral wasteland to retrieve the money and clear his name before the mechanical hourglass runs dry.

Although our hero emanates an aura befitting a prime hacker, he makes no attempt to deny his overdependance on scripted tools. While he complains bitterly about being unable to complete the job unassisted, Miauv wakes and sets off to save him. Ultimately, despair triumphs and it's down to J.B's hasty scheming to untangle the crossed players and restore stability to the world and its digital sub-unit. Log on to a finale of double-crosses and real-to-life metered out justice.

Overall enjoyable. One of the least disappointing cyberpunk themed flicks I've come across. Nothing too far-out plotwise, some good acting to contrast with bad. Visually conservative with some locations, probably due to budget constraints, but not in an overly apparent or off-putting way. The computer environment effects are a little dated, but in my opinion they're still stylish in their own way.

I found little sense in other comments comparing this to Blade Runner or the Matrix. Apart from a futuristic backdrop I can't see anything to suggest any script cloning has taken place.

Retro vibes makes this uneven movie better now than then
zumo-1690830 November 2021
It is not per se a good movie, but I still enjoyed it a lot. 90s scifi and tech lingo like "cyber", "techno" and "hyper" along with how being a "webmaster" is top of the crop (since this is from back when www was peak technology) is very interesting looking back at it now. I dig the kitschy "future" graphics and 90s tech vibe, as it really catches the zeitgeist, even if the movie itself is a bumpy ride. The jungle and techno soundtrack is great even today though.

The bad parts is the at times terrible acting. The main character Lars Bom does a good job, but the other performances are very uneven. The script sometimes feel awkward and probably carries a lot of the blame for making the acting seem off, as some parts of the plot seem underdeveloped and silly. The movie is really cool in places, but that probably only exacerbates the bad moments and make them stand out more.

The movie has all the right elements to become a cult classic though. Never groundbreaking, but it perfectly captures how the future was imagined in the 90s. The movie would have looked cheesy and amateurish back in '98 (and still does), but nostalgia makes many of its shortcomings seem charming instead of damning, and the movie is probably better in 2021 than it was then.

I watched the non-dubbed version with English subtitles by the way.

Vile garbage
jaco-911 September 1999
"The Danish Bladerunner" is boldly stated on the box. Are you kidding me?! This film is a complete drag. When I'm thirsty and go for a soda in the kitchen, I usually pause the vcr, so I won't miss anything. Not this time. I actually found myself looking long and hard in the fridge, just so I wouldn't have to go back. Why the hell is there not ONE sciencefiction-scriptwriter out there who has the vaguest clue about how computers work? It's mindboggling. One of the premises of film, is that our hero (who's a hacker), has a little computerassistant to help him (the Microsoft Office paperclip finally caught on in the future). When he loses the assistant in the movie, he's helpless and can't get into any computers. HE'S A HACKER! It's like saying, that you can't drive your car, if you don't have your lucky "driving-cap" on. I won't even go into the lightning-effect when he recieves electroshock...

A race against time in a dark neo noir Denmark
Ramden30 April 2003
The look of this movie is definitely inspired by "Blade Runner", and it looks pretty cool. It's very dark, and there are a lot of people wearing strange clothes. I guess the directing is fine, but the acting is very superficial. And a lot of the so called one-liners completely tank! Also you've heard the story before: Our hero, J.B., has to find out who stole his boss' money or he dies. The whole race-against-time concept has been used several times before, and the use of it in this film isn't very good. Watch this movie for it's set design, because that is spectacular.

Never read the box. The box always lies.
MercurioKnight18 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I think the cards were stacked against Webmaster, because right from the start there was this itchy feeling, like something was wrong but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Then it hit me. Dubbed. For a little while, they managed most of the lines either as voice over or off screen, with just a little hint here and there, until it became painfully obvious. This is the kind of dubbing that grates on the nerves, with nothing even remotely funny about it. I hate dubbing, but at least, however misplaced, martial arts films badly dubbed tend to have a sense of humour about it.

What I wanted was a film about a hacker doing actual hacking and stuff like that. Maybe like a reverse side of the table of the movie Hackers (being about the person trying to keep them out instead about the people trying to get in). What I got was some poorly written, nonsensical at times murder mystery with a ton of bad chase sequences, a supposedly inept hacker who was neutered without his little ego, and a director who obviously didn't know how to handle a camera. I just wanted to reach in there, grab the camera from the guy, and shoot the dang thing myself. The editing wasn't much better. The acting? Well, I guess if the lead guy didn't have such a bad script to work from, he'd be at least watchable. The main bad guy was OK, too, but pretty much everyone else was a joke. Dubbing didn't help, but the acting was pretty bad even taking that into consideration.

Before I get into more bad, let's perk up to a few good things. Well, one or two. Despite the rudimentary graphics, I rather enjoyed the cyberworld stuff, what little there was of it, and would have much rather watched a movie mostly about, in, and around that than the tepid surroundings outside in the 'real world'. The falsifying thumbprint thing seemed kind of cool, but ended up being rather useless in the scheme of things. The heart gadget, which reminded me of Guillermo Del Toro's Cronos, was interesting, though as a plot device ripped directly from the pages of Escape from New York, it was horribly conceived in the long run. There's one point where the bad guy is unconscious and our hero is right there. Why didn't he try the bad guy's thumb print then (since the heart device was thumb activated)? Nonetheless, some interesting gadgets and cyber stuff, if only they could have been utilized better.

Now, who here dares compare this movie to Blade Runner? Both films take place sometime in the future and there's some kind of off kilter type of romance in it, sort of, in both films. There's the investigation of a murder, but I've seen many a film with a murder at its center that are nothing like either Blade Runner or Webmaster. Identity, for instance. That's about where the similarities end. Period. There is no comparison, just as there wouldn't be between Blade Runner and Hackers. Ridley Scott is a brilliant director with a great mind for art direction and knows some fundamentals of film-making, like where to put the camera. Webmaster is cheap, and not just because of the budget. It's cheap because of bad writing, and because it more often than not takes the easy way out (like writing in a character who barely appeared in the first place to save the girl in the end to get her to Point B by herself without the Hero, so that he could do his thing. Very convenient. Or, the attempted sympathy factor for a character we have no reason to care for. Or, inane things like the car set up to stall them just enough for someone to get away.).

It tries to be hip, it tries to be exploitive, it even tries a twist ending that's not the least bit surprising, and it tries to be thrilling. But a bunch of near identical chase sequences, bad writing, editing, horribly shot, bad acting, etc. does not a thrilling movie make.

Pointless movie...
klang6 May 1999
A desperate attempt to make a "film-noir" sci-fi thriller, but the movie falls short. It has no believable plot, some of the key actors were a joke (NOT Lars Bom, he is cool!). I did like the "access restriction by bandwith maximizing" though. I finished it on principle, but went home with the feeling of having lost two hours of my life...

No special effects, horrible dubbing
shane-766 May 2000
For a movie released in 2000, this movie is very disappointing. But then I found that it was actually a '98 Danish movie called Skyggen that was dubbed (badly) and released in English. It didn't even satisfy my need for a Sci-Fi flick. The acting was only OK, and the computer generated graphics were probably OK for '98, but still nothing spectacular.

As the makers say - A Danish Blade Runner
K-Hjorth17 February 1999
This movie is somehow a different Danish movie. At this time the Dogme-agreement is mentioned all the time, but this movie has managed to become outstanding without being a Dogme-movie.

Skyggen (or The Shadow) is not only characterized by great actors, but it's also a fine presentation of "computer-films". I like the way "Techno-staden" is build, and the way Lars Bom portrays JB is fantastic. He is a very fine actor!

If you haven't already seen this movie - go see it. It's definitely worth spending time on.

The best thing since The Matrix, see it now!
Killer B-214 September 2000
One of the best cyberpunk movies ever. The story of two people trying to find each other in a shadowy underworld where computers are everywhere. Atmospheric and fascinating. The story is kind of like Strange Days, but better. The music rules. Ignore the stupid box and just rent it, you won't be disappointed. 9 out of 10.

This is Sci-Fi masterpiece!
disciple12817 November 2001
This is a movie that really surprised me. I did not, for one second, think that it would be this great. But I was brutally wrong, and I'm glad that I was, because this is one of the finest sci-fi films of all time! The Incredible atmosphere covering the film and the visual style created by the director makes it a unique experience. A ride! A ride you need to take in order to know what real sci-fi is all about. Lars Bom, playing the lead character J.B. does it as a pro, leaving no doubt that J.B. is the best at what he does.He hacks into computers. Though I'm sure he's never done it under pressure before. He has 35 hours to find out who's stolen his bosses money, or....he'll die. Simple? Not really!

Great Hacker film.
aka_thv15 May 2007
While the original release, Webmaster, was poorly dubbed into English.

This is still a great film.

And now with the Advent of Second Life, from Linden Labs, this movie has some real premise on our lives.

Very few movies ever come to define a subculture, several others creates the subculture.

This one is one of the few that epitomizes and dramatizes two aspects of the internet.

The dark-nets and Virtual Realities/Social Networking Sites.

Webmaster is one of the few movies that always sits in queue on my play list.

Especially while I'm hacking.

A total disappointment
mscore21 August 1999
My hopes of seeing "arthouse cyberpunk" in a Danish style ended in disappointment. The film seemed to have several grave problems: the plot was simple to the point of being cheap, the quality of filming and cutting was inconsistent, use of computer graphics was from the 80's and numerous erotic scenes were "out of context". The movie fails to portray any innovative and philosophically interesting insights to the future of cyberspace. Since the budget has apparently limited visual and technical aspects of the film, the artistic and philosophical aspects should have been emphasized.
