A pale imitation of The Manchurian Candidate
pundit-12 June 2005
The plot is a good one and the acting is good, but the movie does not quite live up to it's potential. The story is similar to another film entitled "The Manchurian Candidate". Which is about a man who is brainwashed or psychologically programmed into carrying out an assassination. My recommendation is to rent or watch "The Manchurian Candidate" instead of this one, which seems like a pale imitation. This movie seems like a production that was hastily put together without much thought or planning. The result is that the movie doesn't seem quite convincing and instead rather weak. Watch this only if you have nothing else better to do with your time.

One of Dudikoff's turkeys
Miss_MiChiMi11 March 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is getting bad ratings because it deserves them. Do not be fooled, this is not a science fiction movie. It is a drama revolving around a plot to assassinate a politician.

I have been a Michael Dudikoff fan for about 15 years. I have to say this is one of his worst films. The plot is underdeveloped. The acting is terrible, except for Langenkamp and Dudikoff. They do good jobs with what they are given. Michelle Greene however definitely deserves a mention here. Her idea of acting here is walking around in miniskirts and trying to convey "the ruthless woman" that lurks within her. She fails miserably. Hedison is miscast here. He does not present an authoritative figure, which his character is supposed to be. He comes across as confused and out of his element, more as a puppet than a decision maker.

The visuals are never quite right; every scene being too dark, too bright, filmed too closely, filmed too far away, etc. The movie definitely could have been better. The sound is horrible. Even with surround sound and the volume being loud enough to produce the "static background" effect, the actors words are inaudible in some cases.

I suggest passing this one up. If you want to see a good Dudikoff film, try Avenging Force, Strategic Command, the Silencer, or Soldier Boyz.

Didn't I see this before?

A change of genre for Fred Olen Ray, here tackling a conspiracy thriller with sci-fi touches. Very obviously a low budget rip-off of TOTAL RECALL, this nonetheless has a quite good pacing and some okay fights which allow you to overlook the many flaws. Supporting Dudikoff are NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET's Heather Langenkamp as an ally, plus the usual run of old timers including Ian Ogilvy and David Hedison.

one of Dudikoff's best
MichaelM2411 April 2002
FUGITIVE MIND allows Michael Dudikoff to do a bit more acting that he has in the past. This time around, the focus is on his character and the possibility that his current life is masking a hidden one that has been programmed to resurface in time to commit a political assassination. As a result, Dudikoff gets to deal with his personality as he comes to realize he's not who thinks he is, and winds up on the run from the company he works for and his own wife! Heather Langenkamp is good as the only person who can help him figure things out. Like GALE FORCE (also with Dudikoff), it's a great starting point for a movie that is handled decently enough here to make it at least a good way to spend 90 minutes, but a big-budget production could really do wonders with the story.

Incredibly boring bad movie
Maziun25 November 2014
This movie is Bad. It's an action/thriller with convoluted plot of evil scientists, implanted memories, and a political assassination. It's a pale imitation of "The Manchurian candidate" with a little bit of "Total recall" thrown in. I strongly suggest that you should watch those movies. If you have already seen them , then watch them again. Just don't waste your time on "Fugitive mind".

The story allows Michael Dudikoff ("American ninja") to do a bit more acting that he has in the past. Dudikoff has always been a capable B actor and he proves it here. He isn't able to save the movie , because the plot sucks. The story is predictable and the action is terribly lame. The movie drags almost all the time and I was fast-forwarding it at few places. You won't be satisfied either if you're a thriller or action movie fan. It's a cheaply made movie that will satisfy only the most desperate and tasteless viewers. This is lame movie that isn't even "so bad , it's good". Don't waste your time. If you like Dudikoff better watch "American ninja" or "Avenging force". I give it 1/10.

Mind control can be a real headache.
DigitalRevenantX711 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
CAUTION: Possible plot spoilers present.

Electrician Robert Dean finds himself in trouble when a group of men try to abduct him. He goes to his wife for help but discovers her on the phone with the men. Finding a floppy disk hidden behind one of his photos, Dean sneaks into his workplace – the medical company Gencom – and runs the disk. He is surprised to find that he was actually somebody else – former soldier John Rice – who was captured & brainwashed into becoming an assassin for Gencom's interests. Along with a female friend who was also captured, Dean must expose the company's plans to assassinate a senator who is trying to expose Gencom's activities to the media.

Ever since he served as DOP on the cult Nazi zombie classic SHOCK WAVES back in the 1970s, Fred Olen Ray has made a living making low-budget genre films. Unlike Jim Wynorski, Olen Ray does things with his own style of filmmaking – and he is not dishonest like Wynorski. Olen Ray's films do not aim too high but wear their cheapness as a badge of honour.

Alas, even Fred Olen Ray can make mistakes. Fugitive Mind is one of those mistakes. The film models itself as a conspiracy thriller but doesn't actually expose the conspiracy coherently enough to be understood. Olen Ray for some reason doesn't put any humour in the film, playing everything straight to the film's detriment. The film's first act has us believe that Michael Dudikoff's tradesman is a victim of some sort of conspiracy but the second act drops the ball completely. It is never made clear what the actual plans of the Gencom company is – they are revealed to have an insider working for the senator but the purpose of this is unclear. Also there is a private detective trying to expose the conspiracy but he is killed off just when things get interesting.

The film's cast are competent enough to survive the film's collapse but they must have had been hard up for the money to sign up for this dreck. Michael Dudikoff, who has been one of Royal Oaks' stock actors for much of the 1990s, does a decent job as usual, but the rest of the cast seem clueless as to what is going on here.

Hilarious inconsistencies
robbird-947-8083155 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is bad. You knew it was bad before you came here. But check out the inconsistencies in the movie, they are hilarious.

1. The "car bomb" planted in the PI's car (Pontiac Firebird) actually blows up a completely different car (Buick Riviera), shown in a completely different location. Hey, I guess they were both red. Yay stock footage!

2. Dudikoff is supposed to be a "special forces sniper" that was dishonorably discharged, but he has no idea (apparently) how to fight with a rifle. Watch the silly fight scene at the end.

3. When the two evil scientists are "made to return him to normal" at the end of the movie, which is supposed to be months later, they are wearing the same clothing as when they were caught. For that matter, so is the Senator.

4. The entire movie appears to be shot in someone's house. In one scene, you can clearly see the kitchen through an open doorway in the "research and laboratory facility"

"When does a man of science take time to acknowledge fate, "
hwg1957-102-2657046 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
An ex-special forces man down on his luck is programmed by a sinister medical group to assassinate a US senator. He starts to have nightmares before the event and begins to wonder what is wrong with him. It is a mix of 'The Manchurian Candidate' and 'Total Recall' but it is not bad at all. The plot is clear and apart from the rather weak ending it keeps one interested.

This partly due to the acting. Michael Dudikoff is quite believable as the distressed hero. He is supported by a surprisingly good cast;Barry Newman, David Hedison ,Ian Ogilvy, Gil Gerard and Heather Langenkamp who are all effective in their roles. The low budget shows but the actors give a good account of themselves. The director Fred Olen Ray is no Orson Welles but this film is entertaining enough and certainly not a waste of time.

suspensfull, unpredicatble, intellagent,...anything else?
Andras_J3 January 2002
First of, I don't believe this movie is getting such a hard time in reviews. I thought it was very good. Although Michael Dudikoff is the dominent lead I think Heather Langenkamp stole the movie. And this is the only reason I bought this, because of her. Because of her roles as Nancy in the Nightmare on elm street movies. For a Heather fan this is a true gem! But I discovered even more reasons to like this. The scientifical intellagence, the suspensfull unpreciatble storyline, the action and everything in between. I was on edge throught it trying to understand as it had a complex and clever story line! It kept you watching! This movie has made me a Michael Dudikoff fan also. This could had been a masterpiece but instead is in comferbale position of the best straight to video movie ever. ALTHOUGH, it did actually get a limited theatrical release in the USA and Canada. Remember that! But it does have some bad qualities. Heather and Michael were great leading roles, but some of the other actors. The acting was weak from some.

In my oppinion this movie does not deliver the sci-fi good of "aliens" or "terminator" but is a damm good sci-fi flick that is worth the buy! Given a international release this could had been a international hit but unfortunatly is relitivly unkown accross Europe. It does lack in places. But if your a fan of the lead actors and like a bit of science mixed with action, do buy this film!

I give this movie a solid 8 out of 10

Worth a look for fans of the actors
C. M. O'Brien18 August 2000
Yet another quickie from Ray, this one presents a convoluted plot of evil scientists, implanted memories, and a political assassination. To his credit, Ray assembles eclectic casts of genre vets, and this is no exception with Ian Ogilvy star of cult director Michael Reeves' films and former TV Saint, Irwin Allen star David Hedison, TV Buck Rogers Gil Gerard and others. Worth a look for fans of the actors or director, but don't be misled by the title and expect a kind of Donovan's Brain in a jar on the lam.

A Underrated Movie Definitely
K_ash1019 November 2015
The plot follows a man who discovers he has been brainwashed to kill a government official. This film was very good. It is a well made thriller that doesn't seem like it got the kind of audience that it deserved. Yeah it does have some lacking parts but none the less still holds up pretty well. I actually didn't know this film existed until a friend told me about it and they loved it, so I just had to see it. It is a very underrated suspenseful film with a good story and some great performances from Michael Dudikoff, who I had never seen in a film before but really impressed me with this film. Also Heather Langenkamp, best known for the Nightmare On Elm Street films, did really well and she also impressed me by proving that she could be great as a drama film actress as well as a horror film actress.

This movie sucks!
fraktl28 June 2004
Oh man! Do NOT watch this movie! Do NOT rent this movie! Do NOT buy this movie! It's so terrible! It's the worst movie I've ever seen (along with Arrival II).

I was suckered in by the box art and because it was in the science fiction section of the video store, so I rented it. There is no science fiction in it whatsoever! Terrible plot, terrible acting, terrible everything!

Thing is, I recognized one or two actors in this movie that I thought were decent, but in this movie, they seriously suck!

Do NOT make the same mistake I did. Save your money and rent some REAL science fiction, if that's what you're after.
