The only Dragonball Z movie that actually feels like a movie.
Aaron137525 July 2010
This Dragonball Z movie actually has a very decent runtime of an hour and nine minutes. That may not seem like a long movie, but compared to other Z movies it is a nice bit of time indeed. Why does the simple increase of length help the movie? Well for one thing they had time to set up the movie while still having a decent fight at the end that is just not another 2 minute fight where someone powers up and decimates their opponent like in the first film with Cooler. This one has a strange mysterious alien getting Vegeta to his planet. He is a Saiyan and he wishes that his prince return to the new Vegeta planet. Well he is not really interested until told of the legendary Super Saiyan warrior creating havoc. The thought of challenging this warrior leads Vegeta onto the ship to the new planet with quite a few Z warriors in tow. A bit more buildup to follow, when I first saw this one I was very worried that there would not be enough time for a decent fight, but thankfully the longer running time meant there could be one giant fight between the Z fighters and Brolly who was the legendary one. Still, while it is good it has its faults as well. For some reason Vegeta is completely out of character here. He shows fear of this warrior and freezes up at the sight of him basically conceding they had no chance against him. This is not something Vegeta has ever done in the regular series. This is the same warrior who usually goes after the much stronger foes still thinking he is going to win. I also did not like the way this Super Saiyan is taken out, but that has more to do with how he is presented later (he would appear in one other film and sort of another one). Overall, though this one is very nice has a great fight and great humor as I loved the scene where Master Roshii challenges Brolly.

Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan Review
Spideyfan-963-2462159 September 2016
Dragon Ball Z: Broly-The Legendary Super Saiyan(1993) Starring: Eric Vale, Bin Shimada, Ryō Horikawa, Mayumi Tanakam, Toshio Furukawa, Masako Nozawa, Naoko Watanabe, Hiromi Tsuru, and Kōhei Miyauchi Review You know for a guy who doesn't like Dragon Ball and sees it as a joke thanks to that 2009 live action film I freaking enjoyed myself with this picture. It was tons of fun. In this Dragon Ball film it introduces the super-villain Broly into the franchise. When a spaceship touches down during a picnic, the saiyan Paragus tries to persuade Vegeta to rule the new planet Vegeta. There, Vegeta enlists Paragus's powerful son, Broly, to help him investigate a series of interplanetary attacks. But when Broly comes face to face with Goku, his long buried rage sends shockwaves through the universe. This films was purpose I believe was to go along with the dragonball storyline for fans while being enjoyable for other kids who didn't see the show at the time. It has great animation and great action sequences for a cartoon but to be honest I wasn't heavy on the plot. But it does seem interesting which is a good thing. You know my brother in law would always have a conversation about the superman movie Man of Steel and he would say to me its Dragon Ball because of the fight scenes, And I would say I've always wanted to see that kind of fight and he would say you have basically have always wanted to see a dragonball fight. The film is short of course I think this needed rto be longer if it were to hook me because I did not like that opening with Goku going for a job interview with CHi Chi I think that's how you spell her name. But later it got my curiosity then quickly my attention. Dragon Ball Z: Broly: The Super Saiyan is a fun time, with a some what interesting story, all the characters you know and love and great action sequences I give it a three out of five.

The Legendary Super Saiyan.. what a great movie!!
lucas-4210 December 2002
This film marks the longest of all the Dragonball Z movies. Over an hour in length and could actually pass as a full feature film. It also has one of the most complex storylines of all the rest of the movies. I won't say much about it, as it's storyline is it's strogest point with fighting coming in a close second. Brolli, who is apparently the REAL Legendary Super Saiyan, is intent on destroying the galaxy and it's up to the Z team to stop him. Well, it's more fun to watch what happens than for me to tell it. Let's just say that Brolli goes through some wicked transformations and does some brutal, brutal damage to the Z team. He's unstoppable through much of the film and when he does say something it's usually pretty wicked or scary. Like... "Monster? No, I'm the devil!"

You'll enjoy this movie so very much it'll make your head spin. It's a great collage of great storytelling and fighting. But once you've seen it a few times it begins to lose it's impact. So make sure that first viewing is a good one! ;)

The Best DBZ film??
gigan-9219 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is the longest DBZ film at just over 70 minutes, but is it also the best?? I'm sure any fan of the series who's watched this movie has asked themselves this question. It is indeed possible. Funimation has, just like all the other (45-51 minute films) films, re-released it beautifully remastered and seen the way it was meant to be. Also it is unedited so you'll see all the details of the Legendary Super Saiyan's background. Perhaps that is why it is pretty damn close to being the best if not so. The story goes pretty deep into the history of these villains, deeper into the barbarity and violent nature of the saiyans themselves. The screenplay makes you wait for the final confrontation but when the action does start it never lets up. Fueling the intense fight is incredibly bad-ass music by Pantera, Doosu, Haji and several other bands. Not to mention an impressive new opening theme by Tendril.

Broly himself, voiced by Vic Mignogna, is a menacing new villain and his transformation scene is fantastically dark. His power is beyond comprehension, most likely far above the level of Perfect Cell, seeing as how he makes light of the entire Z-team not just one-on-one but all at the same time as well. Does he know any limits?? He demonstrates a very different style of fighting that I enjoyed. Also starring is Paragus (Dameon Clarke), Broly's estranged father. By the time the film concludes a diabolical plot is unraveled and a contest of strength turns into a test of who will survive the longest.

Great DBZ movie with a hilarious foundation
smetin17 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Dragon Ball has always promised us a few things: great fight scenes, a hungry protagonist, evil villains and hilarious sub-plots/filler. This movie, for me, captures basically all of these. The movie starts with Chi-Chi trying to put on a good impression for a school she wants Gohan to get into. Seeing Goku in a suit trying to pass off reading as one of his hobbies is hilarious enough, but seeing Krillin try and do karaoke is the icing on the cake!

When we are finally greeted with the main plot of this movie, we are introduced to Broly and his father. They attempt to convince Vegeta that they are trying to resurrect a new planet Vegeta and want him to be their bountiful master. They take him and a bunch of the other Z-fighters with them. However, they tell him of a legendary super saiyan who needs to be dealt with. Of course, with a movie title like "Broly - the legendary super saiyan" I think its no spoiler that Broly is that person!

When Goku arrives things finally kick off and Broly is unleashed. Broly was born with a power level "over 9000 (or 8000 if you watch the series in Japanese)!!" and he hates Goku...why? Well, in true DBZ style, the reason is hilarious. I won't spoil it, but it will make you chuckle. For those who say the reason is stupid, I urge you to remember what you are watching...

The fight scenes that follow are nothing short of incredible. It is some of the best action I have ever seen in Dragon Ball. Super saiyans are here, there and EVERYWHERE. Ki-blasts are flying, punches are being thrown and environments are being pummelled. It is great stuff and I am sure if you enjoy classic Dragon Ball Z, you will enjoy this. The finale is great because it incorporates a sense of teamwork, despite Vegeta's reservation to act for anyone but himself!

All in all, this is a great Dragon Ball movie. It is my personal favourite and I highly recommend you watch it. If you are new to the world of Dragon Ball, I recommend that you watch the series first, because it will flow better. Enjoy!!

As epic as they got for awhile
ericstevenson8 May 2017
The "Dragonball Z" movies are certainly good, but they ran into this huge problem. They were just too short! These things were as short as 40 minutes sometimes! They are probably the shortest films I have seen in modern times that have been considered feature length, but not this one! Okay, 72 minutes still isn't that long, but this really feels like a movie based on "Dragonball Z". We get introduced to Broly and it's great that we actually get movies that have a recurring villain. We even get a great backstory when we realize he placed literally next to Goku on the day he was born!

I love the allusions to Bardock too. The other main villain is named Paragus. It didn't take too long to figure out that his name was a pun on "Asparagus". I admit that it does seem a stretch to have the villain named "Broly" as a reference to broccoli. They even themselves point this out, so it was fun. The pacing was great and the artwork is as good as anything featured on the show or other movies. I love how they try to make this story personal. Master Roshi shows off his muscles, but still doesn't get to fight. This is why the more recent movies are even better. ***1/2

Broly Good
ultrareviewshow17 February 2022
One of the better DBZ movies and one of the most memorable characters. There are some minor problems with the story, but overall I think it works fine, though the plan does seem a bit strange. The story actually gets a lot darker than any of the other movies. They shove in some unneeded comedy bits, which kind of take away from some more serious moments, but maybe they felt it was needed to balance the tone. You have a sympathetic backstory, yet the characters went on to do such terrible things they themselves aren't really redeemable.

There's a good amount of action, and you see an enemy that's just completely overpowered. He's almost like a slasher villain. Thankfully not too much time is spent on extra characters, and what is shown is actually relevant to the plot and enjoyable enough. I like the little bird babies.

This is completely separate from the dragon ball super Broly character and universe or timeline. It is connected to the second and third Broly movies DBZ Movie 10: Broly Second Coming and DBZ Movie 11: Bio-Broly but they're terrible. I would only recommend watching this and the DBS movie.

One of My Favorites Warning: Spoilers
This is not only my favorite Dragon Ball Z movie, but one of my favorite movies of all time. The longest and best DBZ film there is. I can't say how much I love this movie. I like the twist of how Goku isn't he first Super Sayian and is no where near strong enough to defeat Broly. Goku gets one of his biggest beatings ever. I honestly think this shouldn't have been a movie but a saga on the show. I mean the idea of a new Planet Vegeta and Vegeta the Prince is great. Also this is the first Goku villain that's held a grudge against Goku before they meet either on TV or movie. Broly's hated Goku forever. Broly sort of does that large super sayian Trunks does that slows him down but it doesn't slow Broly down. I really do love this one and recommend it 100%

A fantastic movie that could have been one of the best sagas.
derekbellas13 January 2017
Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan feels less like a movie, and more like a short, but amazing saga from the normal Dragon Ball Z. I felt like the movie had some great characters, and easily one of the greatest villains the series has ever seen. I honestly would have loved to see a saga for Broly himself, as he could have been an even better villain, but the movie still does an excellent job. The voice acting, animation, and action scenes maintain the same high quality level as the show. The only real criticism I think I can give is the ending that seemed a little lack luster for me, but it still wraps up in a decent fashion, and I don't think I would have been able to write a better ending anyway. All in all, any negatives are vastly overshadowed by the rest of the movie, and well worth a watch for any DBZ fan.

Heavily Flawed..
Stefan_Loves_Movies12 February 2022
Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan (1993) is a 1h12m movie featuring... surprise Broly, directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi.

I don't want to sound like a hater, but this movie was a mess. The story tries to conceal the identity of "The Legendary Super Saiyan" at first, but you already know who it is since its name is in the TITLE of the movie so there was no plot twist!

The origin of Broly and his feelings towards Goku makes no sense. The film is heavily edited, skipping shots and jumping from one thing to another. The villain was unappealing and there was too much humor for my taste.

Conclusion: I did not enjoy Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan (1993), the pacing and the story itself was just not good enough.

Finally, an enjoyable movie!!!!!!!!
The1Wishmaster17 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This DBZ movie is the best one out of all, and this movie could be used as the soul to a live action movie!! This movie had the best music and action. Other English DBZ movies are good but are better left Japanese, for example; The History of Trunks. FUNimation outdid themselves this time, as this movie is so enjoyable thats its only drawback is that it ended. I could see this as a Live Action movie to see if more would work. Broly himself is an amazing character, as he does a good job pretending to be good then losing it when Kakarot aka Goku shows up. When he and Goku meet face to face, the movie really takes off. This movie is worth everyones time and makes a great source for entertainment.

Best DBZ movie!!!
jake-law1232 August 2010
Out of all the Dragon Ball Z movies, Bojack, Cooler, Lord Slug eka. This one tops them all. The Legendary Super Saiyan Broly, and epic that will get you pumped up from beginning to end. Broly is without a doubt the most bada** movie villain in DBZ. Three movies to honor his coolness.

A saiyan named Paragus arrives on Earth for Vegeta, and takes him to a planet to be honored the new king of Saiyans. It turns out that his son, named Broly, is the Legendary super saiyan, and becomes an unstoppable monster that, for a variety of the film, kicks the crap out of the Z warriors.

Seriously, most of the film is set around Broly killing everybody, which, although gets a little repetitive, also gets amazingly awesome and intense. Broly is ridiculously monstrous, and is the most bada** DBZ movie villain ever!

Its about a full length-ed movie too, unlike the others, which gives more room for conflicts.

The best of the Broly series by far, even though its just him beating everybody around. What I disliked about it was Vegeta, who is a huge puss throughout the whole film. When Piccolo steps in, its awesome, and things really heat up. The music kicks a** as well, setting the mood for each individual fight scene. The way Broly massacres everybody is insane, crushing their heads and all kinds of crap.

The title says it all, the Legendary Super Saiyan at his most monstrous.

I can honestly give my opinion that broly movie is going to make a history for dragon ball super movie. i can't assure you that they might continue the series in the same art style but the movie is Going to introduce pure art.

aside from that plot wise i thing the character introduction are lit and the fights are going to spark a lot of thrills. each and every detail about the characters involvement about the their past and how everything is connected and how vengeance is formed. is what makes broly movie worth watching. the sentiments from each scene can touch anyone's heart that you might want to become broly or love broly even more...

Taking the Word "Legendary" to a Whole New Level
Just-A-Fan-of-Buuhan14 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm currently binge watching all the Dragon Ball films with Broly in them to celebrate the 1 year birthday of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. This is the first of the four-movie set, and by far one of the best Dragon Ball Z movies.

At the start of the movie, we are introduced to Paragus, who warns Vegeta of the Legendary Super Saiyan and persuades him to rule New Planet Vegeta. Goku is also warned of the threat by King Kai, and Goku, being the guy who likes strong opponents, sets out to find him.

Shockingly enough, after a duel between titans, Goku later finds out that Broly, his neighbor in the maternity ward, is the Legendary Super Saiyan. What follows is one of the longest battles in the Dragon Ball franchise, and Vegeta going through a mid-life crisis.

I like how Takao Koyama and Akira Toriyama both made this Broly a force to be reckoned with, and the Legendary Super Saiyan transformation that Broly undertakes is so incredible, and to me, it was the highlight of the movie. The trailer to this movie is incredible as well.

In fact, this movie gained so much popularity, it spawned two sequels: Broly - Second Coming, and the infamous Bio-Broly. I'd recommend watching the Broly films in this order: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly - Second Coming, Bio-Broly, and Dragon Ball Super: Broly.

This movie is battles, humor, and action galore in both Japanese and Funimation dubs alike, but I'd recommend watching this in the Funimation dub. The rock music from Haji's Kitchen in the final battle between two very strong warriors born on the same day as the other doesn't fail to disappoint.

Sure, the final fight is ended in only one punch (Goku was Saitama before One Punch Man was a thing, people), but two childhood rivals duking it out to see who was stronger never fails to get my Saiyan pride kicking in.

the Super Saiyan of legend
erminahotmail31 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Then this is the number 8 of the Dragon Ball Z films. So this one gets stuck with not being that it really destroyed the southern galaxy if they don't do something it will also touch our northern galaxy in part time in Saiyan named palabras says to Vegeta the living beings of the planet of neoVegeta and you also say to defeat the legendary Super Saiyan And who he is is a Saiyan who truly had the nature of the Saiyans therefore he is truly the most powerful being in every galaxy he also discovered that Paradise because it was all a trap the old Vegeta discovered that a giant cometwould have been taken on that planet but later it turns out that the legendary Super Saiyan Hey is the son of Paradise Broly So what do I think about this movie Well like everyone said It's really one of the best Dragon Ball movies The only negative thing about this movie is the character of ParadiseI found him just a useless character and he does well to be killed by his son and then the character of Broly was one of the favorite villains of the Dragon Ball Universe and then just for one shot he can destroy a planet and all the people say that we can't allow it toleave him alive otherwise he will shrink you the whole universe and then all the Z warriors who use any way to beat Broly But I can tell you something like this about yourself on what point can this movie be connected can it be set before the cell tournament can it be like this but there is also error ofcontinuations of old Goku is normal but in that place he said that the Super Saiyan had blocked So for a lot of days it couldn't have been normal and then the final battle was really great when Goku tells all his companions to give him energy or they give all the energy thatthey give and then with a punch he destroys Broly but it's incredible by chance in this part Goku has become that Kenshiro this film definitely as all the people said very nice to conclude the rating 8.5.

CONTAINS SPOILERS (but only if you've never seen DBZ)
madd_aka_ringo4 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The narrative of this film is as follows:

Good guys mess around a bit, then go to another planet to fight something.

It becomes apparent that they are going to fight Broly within 5 seconds of him being on-screen.

Broly looks stern.

Good guys mess around a bit. Broly looks a bit angry.

Good guys mess around a bit, give Broly a weak excuse to use his unsurprisingly mighty powers.

Broly destroys EVERYONE.

Goku wins.

The film is utterly pathetic and only marginally redeemed by some stylish action, which is never varied or interesting enough to make up for an incredibly tedious build-up that lasts a good two thirds of the film. It's a shame, because had attention been devoted at any stage to actually having characters or making the (actually quite promising) story more engaging it could have been pretty entertaining - the fighting is well executed after all, even if it's entirely one sided. Sadly the whole thing is so painfully slow and laughably obvious that it's really not worth it.

A tale of hate, revenge, death, and grief and its Dragon Ball Z!
krillinkid7 September 2003
To be blunt this is easily the best Dragon Ball Z movie. The Funimation version is actually better than the original because it has some awesome music. It starts off a Super Sayian destroys the south galaxy and we're next. Now the Z fighters are up for a huge challenge. To defeat the Legendary Super Sayian. You don't have to know anything about DBZ to love this movie. If it was in theaters and a little longer this would easily be a hit on the silver screen. I give it a 9/10. If it was longer I would give it a 10.

He's Just a Big Baby
JayWolfgramm12 March 2023
This was a movie that wasn't readily available back when I was first watching DBZ. The only DBZ movies that Toonami would air were the first three. I only ever saw glimpses of "Broly" through different YouTube AMV's and it looked awesome. Broly was this monster of a Sayian, he towered over our heroes and was looked like a real imposing figure. The premise sounded epic. The "Legendary Super Saiyan", you mean like that one Vegeta mentioned on Namek in the series? That helps give this movie a bit more substance than it just being a new villain they make up, there is some connection rooted in actual DBZ lore. Then, after many years, I finally tracked down a copy and watched the film for myself. And it was...underwhelming.

First off, most translations of the is movie title refer to it as "Broly: Legendary Super Saiyan", so the whole mystery they try to build up of who the villain is, is pretty stupid. I'm positive nobody watching the movie is scratching their head wondering, "gee, who could the legendary super saiyan be?" But yet the movie drags out the reveal intil about 40 minutes into the movie.

Once we get to that point, Vegeta becomes completely useless in the story. And in a real out of character move from him. Vegeta seems to have a "can't win don't try" mentality that has never been seen before or since. This movie does not shine him in a good light, he literally has to be carried to the fight, people begging him to help out.

And sadly, Broly is also not an interesting character. He is big and strong and has a cool concept. But his motivation and back story make no sense, and once he starts fighting, he is the very definition of a one note character. And like many of these movies the ending comes very abruptly with the while build up to it feeling unearned.

With all those negatives being said, I do like the setting of Planet: "New Vegeta". The movie brought all its coolest toys to the playground, we have Krillin, Piccolo, Trunks, Vegeta, Gohan and Goku all in powerful form. And the fight between Broly and all the participating fighters has a lot of really cool moments.

Didn't live up to the hype, but it was an OK entry. Not quite Legendary, but Broly's best and worst are still yet to come in later movies.

this is definatly one of the two best dbz movies tied only with the fusion movie....the only thing that keeps it from being the hands down best is the fact that vegeta is compleatly out of character for much of the movie's important bits....
