A "to be continued movie...not continued".

A "to be continued movie...not continued". This best describes my over all feeling of disappointment with this TV pilot. Fans of Rod Taylor (I didn't know he was an Aussie!) will enjoy seeing the 70 something actor going through his paces (in an Aussie accent) in this predictable scifi film. The film reminds me of Gene Rodenberry's "Andromeda" (Long lost ship vehicle). Some good performaces... but as this was only a pilot be forewarned that the film only serves as a vehicle for future stories of which there were none.

Poore film

Hello, saw this film and do not like it so much. Was a cheap film with cheap performance. The story is quite OK, but it seemed a bit strange to me.

Nice is, that one antagonist is not an one dimensional as it seems to be always.

Only the CGI was OK for me and the sister seemed very nice, she is so smart; love it.

But this film has no real ending for me. Because the film is short it looks, that they ran out of money.

Looks like a part 2 to come, but there is none ...

It's not STAR WARS but ---
com22127 June 2001
Like many potentially great sci-fi flicks THE WARLORD suffers from many problems caused by its starvation budget. Though it was shot for peanuts in 1996 as a t-v pilot on the Paramount back lot -- and looks it-- it nevertheless has a lot to recommend it. It is worth watching if only to see veteran Rod Taylor back in harness and to see yet another brilliant performance by multi-talented teen Elisabeth Harnois. (I can't understand by Hollywood doesn't recognize this youngster's extraordinary talents. She should have been a super star long ago.) The cast does an excellent job with a weak script and Joe Dante's direction is flawless. I found THE WARLORD to be an entertaining two hours, infinitely better than much of the dreck that is passing as excellent cinema in these strange days.

This movie begs for a sequel.

I felt the plot was only for half of a movie. There was no "closure" at the end. The plot also borrowed many ideas from Star Trek. The beam transporter; the Engineers who seemed to be a combination of the Vulcans and the Borg.

It's an obvious TV Pilot

Warning: Spoilers
As a movie, it's a bit flat and the plot reads like the summary for a Nintendo game. Her's sister gets kidnapped by the bad guys, and he gathers a ragtag team of adventurers to save them. A retired general, a reformed bad guy, a telepath, a kid (not as annoying as Wesley), and some woman whose purpose is to take up space on the bridge. The movie can't match StarWars for effects, but it's marginally better than Episode 1 and Episode 2.

As a TV Pilot (which it is), it's very similar to Andromeda, with a civilization thrown in chaos, and the heroes having to restore civilization to save the galaxy. It's a 70s type space opera with improved effects and better set design. While it had the same potential but the "To Be Continued" type ending can lead you with a bad taste in your mouth if you're not ready for it. I was somewhat saddened to find out that there was no series, so the entire movie was a setup for an ending that will never be made.

I rather liked it.

OK, the ending was rather disappointing because it was shot as a pilot, but i definitely would have watched the series. A nice mix from various Sci-Fi-Elements like the "Old General who served the Republic before" .... A advanced technological race who wants to "assimilate" the galaxy ....

I think if the characters had a little more time to develop it would have been interesting.

I like science fiction; and it's nearly impossible for me to walk out of a movie or change the channel in the middle of a story--but this stinker taxed my limits. There is next to no story, the dialogue is thin and weak, the special effects are overall mediocre, and the movie goes nowhere in 2 hours. The only good part was the beginning with a few good scenic shots and an intro that had some promise. What a letdown afterwards! Don't waste your precious time with this.... I give it 3 out of 10.

An opportunity for improvement
dsvseaquest6 September 2016
Like all movies and stories, it has to start somewhere. There is a potential that some will like it and some will not. I for one really liked it. Although the baseline of the story has similarities from other shows, it had it's own uniqueness. What I disapprove of,is that they left it with the pilot instead of at least showing a few more episodes.

If you recall Star Trek (Original Series) also had similar issues - however the movie industry is really fresh out of ideas. The keep remaking the same movies over and over for example Spider Man, Superman, Peter Pan, War of the Worlds, Cape Fear, Bram Stokers Dracula, to name a couple.

The Warlord: Battle for the Galaxy has an opportunity to expand beyond Star Trek the Movies - with today's technology it would be Damn Cool! :) I say to the producers - Use Benedict Cumberbatch as Justin Thorpe, Emma Stone as Rula Kor, and John Pyper-Ferguson as Heenoc Xian.

Hell this movie can yield on returns at lease $1.2 Billion... There is a lot of potential.

Went into this without expectations
Gravendal14 July 2022
Ended up watching it all and wanted to see more and then I learned that...that's it! Which was too bad!

To be an 90s sci fi failed b tv movie series this was actually really good. And way better the like 99% of modern sci fi movies!

It had great visuals, the scenes props were great and man did the engineers and the soul monster look great!

Acting was also good for the most part and the characters enjoyable and I liked the warlord for having a heart but still a warlord.

Like said, too bad there wasn't more. This could have been an interesting trilogy.

A Huge Dissapointment
Bass211 January 2000
I would like to make clear that it is very hard for a science fiction movie to dissapoint me but this one most certainly does. Although the box doesnt make it clear, this movie was designed to set the scene for a television series. The acting is below average and the plot is completely unorriginal. The opening scenes see a simple man loose his younger sister who happens to be a genius and then vowes to find her. There's nothing here you havent seen before and the ending might as well say "To Be Continued....". I dont recommend this movie to anyone who likes the science fiction genre.
