Online music marketplace Beatport has had a rough go of things in recent years. Between severe mismanagement at the hands of SFX Entertainment and obstacles preventing the download store from finding new owners following the conglomerate’s recent bankruptcy filing, there’s no easy fix for its current state of affairs – although its former CEO has a few ideas.
Jonas Tempel was one of Beatport’s three founding members – and the only one that we know of who disagreed with how we presented the company’s history in our February exposé. Although having resigned in 2010, Tempel still maintains an emotional investment in the brand that has prompted him to pen an open letter to the company in light of its recent troubles that was originally published on Nest HQ.

Daddy’s Home Trailer. Sean Anders and John Morris‘s Daddy’s Home (2015) movie trailer stars Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell, Linda Cardellini, and Paul Scheer. Daddy’s Home‘s plot synopsis: “When a divorced guy’s ex-wife re-marries someone way more uptight, he re-enters her life and wreaks havoc.”
Mark Wahlberg has solidified himself as a viable comedic asset ever since Ted blew up the box-office. He was hysterical at various points in Boogie Nights, but that was a far more successful showcase for his dramatic chops than anything else. Bit parts in things like Date Night helped ramp up his official entry to comedy, and Ted just cemented that ability to transition in and out of it. This is now the second time Wahlberg joins Ferrell in a comedy – the two were in The Other Guys together in 2010.

Although Jurassic World doesn’t come out until next summer, you might sense its release date coming ever closer, just like Dr. Ian Malcolm could feel the T-rex before it came back for a second snack. To help hold fans over, a viral site has been launched that focuses on Masrani, the company that acquired International Genetic Technologies and successfully opened Jurassic World on Isla Nublar.
A fictional company that will play a key role in Jurassic World, Masrani is run by CEO Simon Sanjay (played by Irrfan Khan). Originally a telecommunications company, Masrani expanded its reach into the oil field where profits skyrocketed, eventually allowing Simon to buy International Genetic Technologies after Dr. John Hammond died in 1998. Having control of InGen, Simon built the Jurassic World theme park on Isla Nublar, the destination droves of moviegoers will visit next June via their local big screens.

On the heels of the 39th edition of the Toronto Int. Film Festival (Sept 4-14), Ifp’s Independent Film Week is where a plethora of fiction, non-fiction and new this year, web-based series from the likes of Desiree Akhavan and Calvin Reeder find future coin. Could Aubrey Plaza win a Golden Popcorn next year for her performance in The To-Do List? Why did Mariah Carey literally shower an American Idol contestant in glitter last night? And why is Charlie Brown not such a good guy after all?

If being featured on IMDb was not cool enough, now the Don 2 trailer is the first featured trailer on the Rotten Tomatoes Home page! Not only that, it is featured above big Hollywood upcoming films like The Avengers, Sherlock Holmes 2, and Spielberg’s War Horse! How is that for cool! In case you don’t know RottenTomatoes.com is a website dedicated to movies, movie ratings and the discussion of films. Many people use the movie ratings on the site as a barometer for films being good or bad. If you have ever see the fresh red tomato (certified fresh and good) or the green splat (poor ratings) that means it has been rated on the site’s Tomatometer. In fact, Apple on its pages shows the Rotten Tomates rating on the movie pages in iTunes. Not only does Rotten Tomatoes take in critics’ ratings but also the...

There is a certain reversion to origin story that is to be expected in a reboot of a superhero film franchise, a revisiting of an iconic character's most basic roots. Often times, the particulars are tweaked and changed, to set a different course for the retelling and new adventures for the hero.
There are few origin stories as well known as that of Superman's, his retreat from a dying Krypton leading him to crashland in Smallville, Kansas. As such, a radical revision of early days would be seen as heretical, and earn the upcoming big screen reboot, "Man of Steel," instant scorn from taste-making fans.
Still, with Christopher Nolan producing the film, one should expect some darker shading applied to the age-old tale. Nolan is the man who revived a foundering, parody-of-itself Batman franchise into the powerhouse, Oscar-nominated trilogy-to-be that it is today, bringing gloom and psychotic evil to a decrepit Gotham.

Skype just revealed something new--it's adopting in-app adverts. Supposedly, it won't interfere with your "Skype experience."
The new ads will appear in some users's Skype home pages starting this week, the company announced in a blog post. Advertising, when done in the right way, will help us continue to invest in developing great products," according to the statement.
While the app will use some personal data with ad partners, it's possible to opt out of sharing "non-personally identifiable demographic data with advertisers," and the ads will only appear "occasionally." This occasional ad presentation may be as little as one ad per brand partner per day. Groupon, Universal Pictures, and Visa are already on board, and the ads will appear in the U.S., U.K., and Germany at first.
Skype also mentions three times that the adverts won't interfere with the "Skype experience," which is paramount for the company--as perhaps...

One of the surprise word-of-mouth hits at Sundance comes from an unexpected source: first-time filmmaker Jon Foy, of Philadelphia, who landed in the Sundance competition with Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles. Veteran doc filmmaker Doug Block (Home Page, The Kids Grow Up), who runs the doc community site The D-Word, got a call from the rookie Philadelphia filmmaker and film school dropout, seeking advice. He had been toiling away for more than five years on a doc about the Toynbee Tiles, which crop up embedded in roads around the country, from the North East spreading all the way to South America, inspiring many theories about their origin. Update: The doc won the best directing documentary prize Saturday at Sundance. Here's the Sundance ...

Doug Block is a distinct type of documentary filmmaker - the subjects in his last few films have been those closest in his life: his family. From Home Page to 51 Birch Street and now with his recently released The Kids Grow Up, he's tackled the complex issues of being both a son and a father, and of growing up and letting go. We sat with Doug over BLTs at a sandwich shop around the corner from his office in Dumbo, a Brooklyn neighborhood home to many filmmakers, musicians and new technology types. Much like the subjects in his films, Doug was extremely open about his experiences making The Kids Grow Up and the unique relationship he has with his daughter, Lucy. Tribeca: It appears that you had to deal with a fair amount of resentment from your daughter Lucy. How did you deal with the dual roles of both filmmaker...

This hotel is our idea of heaven; all the housekeepers are surfer babes who run around giggling with each other before they strip down on the beach and shred waves. First of all, regardless of how shocking the Dexter Season 4 finale was (and it was very shocking indeed), it was in the next to last episode that Dexter embedded itself in television history. I think John Lithgow uttering the words "Hello, Dexter Morgan" will live on the top ten of great television moments for all time.
Dexter returning home from dispatching the vile Trinity killer to find his wife dead, a very close second. A serial killer affirming his sense of humanity, only to have that slashed away – chilling.
Perhaps the strangest moment for me came in the minutes following the finale. Showtime aired part of the clip I'll present below, of Dexter Season 4 stars Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow discussing the season. It's great stuff, and I don't want to diminish it at all… but what the heck is up with Michael C. Hall's new look? All...

Facebook, in its ever-resourceful quest to balance advertising with its users fickle sense of home page ownership, is testing a new engagement ad that doesn't drive users to a sponsor's Facebook page but rather asks them to complete a direct response form that opens right on the home page. Currently offering a free Chick-fil-a chicken biscuit to users who provide their addresses, the ad provides a link that initiates a pop-up window over the news feed. The response form asks for users' information and allows them to use the ad to update their addresses within their profiles or to gloat about their free breakfast sandwiches on their walls.
The new ad format is the most integrated home page ad option Facebook has yet offered, allowing advertiser and customer to communicate valuable marketing data without ever leaving the user's home page. The free sample format being tested with Chick-fil-a is ideal for national food chains,...
