"Het Kampioenenlied", the show's first theme song, has a short version used in-series only and has a full length version of three minutes long with the characters singing as well. The song clearly samples the Libyan national anthem "Libya, Libya, Libya" and bears similarities with the 1990 song "Mondiale", released by Italo-Belgian singer-songwriter Rocco Granata on the occasion of the FIFA World Cup in Italy. The full length version was released as LP through Dutch label Philips Records.
Initially, Carry Goossens was cast as Dimitri, and Jacques Vermeire as Oscar. However on the audition day for the role of Oscar's wife Pascale, Vermeire had to leave early, which led to Goossens being the co-star of some auditionees. When the auditioners noticed Goossens' chemistry with Danni Heylen, it was decided that Goossens would stay Oscar, alongside Heylen's Pascale, and that Vermeire would instead become Dimitri.
At the outset in 1990, creator and script editor Luc Beerten thought F.C. De Kampioenen would last for only 3 seasons. To his surprise, the sitcom became the second longest running in Flemish television history, ending its run after 21 seasons. The longest running Flemish sitcom is De kotmadam (1991) which started a year later and is to end at 25 seasons. De kotmadam creator Ronnie Commissaris guest starred as mister Kolenbunder, boss of Dimitri's car mechanic trade guild in De sympathiekste (1995).
Jakob Beks' character Bernard Theofiel Waterslaeghers (BTW) was extremely unpopular among the fans of the series because of the character's snide arrogance, rudeness and loudness. Jakob Beks later admitted that he was never happy in the role of BTW.
Loes van den Heuvel, Danni Heylen, Ann Tuts and An Swartenbroekx formed a girl group called The Championettes. The group scored a couple of hit singles in Flemish charts, with "Elke keer opnieuw" reaching number 13 in 1994. The group came together for special occasions on the show. The name was derived from FC Championettes, the soccer team the female characters briefly establish to challenge their husbands in season four's FC Championettes (1993). The team was sponsored by Dimitri.
