I’d imagine every one of us, despite our individual life situations, however privileged or difficult they may be, wouldn’t have too much trouble coming up with a pretty long list of people and circumstances for which to be grateful, during the upcoming week traditionally reserved for the expression of thanks as well as throughout the entirety of the year.
Even in our brave new world, where gratitude and humility and generosity of spirit often seem to be in short supply, at the mercy of greed, abuse of power, disregard for the rule of law, and megalomaniac self-interest cynically masquerading as an aggressive strain of nationalist, populist passion, there are good, everyday reasons to look around and take stock of blessings in one’s immediate surroundings.

Every now and then, martial arts movies go, er, a 'little leftfield', Here are some examples...
There are few feelings I enjoy as much as watching a movie that shakes me out of my complacency, wakes me up from my jaded quasi-slumber and makes me go “I’ve not seen that before!” I watch way too many films and it can take a lot to genuinely shock or surprise me, but there are few genres that manage it as often as martial arts.
Now, I appreciate there’s a lot of base level ‘weirdness’ to the genre if you’re not used to it. There’s curious dubbing, an emphasis on physicality over plotting, some eastern cultural touchpoints that baffle unfamiliar western audiences… but fans get used to all that. I’m talking about something slightly different.
To clarify, it might seem strange to new viewers when...

There are many filmmaking workshops, hosted by institutions ranging from Sundance to Ifp, that allow emerging directors to assess their next projects with a group of mentors. Shudder Labs falls in line with that tradition, but comes equipped with a special focus: The new creative retreat is exclusively designed for horror directors. Hosted by Shudder, the horror streaming platform owned by AMC Networks, Shudder Labs was run by former journalist and curator Sam Zimmerman and took place June 11–15 at the Mohonk Mountain House.
Seven filmmakers participated in the lab, taking guidance from mentors that included Sarah Adina Smith (“Buster’s Mal Heart”), Larry Fessenden (director, “The Last Winter”) and Lindsay Peters (Director of the Frontieres International Co-Production Market). The Masters-in-Residence were Mike Flanagan (director, “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” “Hush,” the upcoming Stephen King adaption “Gerald’s Game”) and Nick Antosca (screenwriter, “Channel Zero,” “Hannibal,” “The Forest”).

NBA stars are competitive both on-and-off the court, as evidenced by the Instagram exchange between LeBron James and Draymond Green in the aftermath of the Golden State Warriors beating the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday. Three days later, Warriors power forward Green showed up to the championship parade in Oakland, California, on Thursday sporting a snarky T-shirt, Espn reported. The offending article of clothing featured the logo for Quicken Loans — Cavs’ owner Dan Gilbert’s company and the title sponsor for the team’s home arena — but with the text changed to “Quickie,” alongside an...

Golden State Warriors: 1; “American Ninja Warrior”: 0 The Western Conference Champions reclaimed the NBA’s Larry O’Brien Trophy on Monday night, making ABC was the other big winner of the evening. Game 5 drowned out the premieres of NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” and “Spartan,” as well as Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Superhuman.” Of course, much like the Warriors’ big victory, ABC’s was to be expected. Due to the nature of live sports, the below Nielsen numbers for Game 5 are likely understated and could adjust up in the final tally. Also Read: NBA Finals: Golden State Warriors Beat.

“I think like any genre, the movies have to be good and you have to keep the audience engaged. One of the things that we’re doing when we’re bringing together the DC Justice League Universe is we’re creating not only stories that work for the individual film but they have some resonance to the other films that we’re doing. And I’m hoping that what’s also gonna keep the interest very keen is we’re telling hopefully compelling stories. I mean, one of the great things about dealing with superheroes in general, at least from our standpoint, is they’re both inspirational and aspirational characters, so you’re hoping that the audience is gonna want to be like some of them but you’re also hoping that the audience can relate to some of them, that if we make their stories compelling and relatable, interesting and emotional,...

The 5th Annual Napa Valley Film Festival (Nvff), scheduled to take place November 11-15, has announced its Narrative and Documentary feature film line-ups for juried competition. The complete program of approximately 125 films, including special presentations, sneak previews of award season contenders, narrative and documentary shorts, and short features, as well as jury members, will be announced soon.
Directors of the Narrative and Documentary feature films in competition will participate in Nvff’s unique Artists-in-Residence Program presented in partnership with the incomparable Meadowood Napa Valley. Directors will stay at the luxury resort for six nights during the festival and are treated to special events and workshops with their competition group and industry mentors. Meadowood Napa Valley will also award $10,000 to the winning filmmakers in both the Narrative and Documentary competition categories at the Closing Night Awards Ceremony on Sunday, November 15.
“We experienced nearly a 50% jump in submissions this year, making it just that much more difficult to whittle down to our 10 narrative and 10 documentary feature films for our core competition,” said Nvff Executive & Artistic Director Marc Lhormer. “We look forward to sharing these compelling real and imagined stories with our audiences in November, and to supporting these innovative filmmakers and getting to know them during their tenure with us as Artists-in-Residence at Meadowood."
Nvff has also announced that former USA Today Chief Film Critic Claudia Puig will be joining the festival team. She will serve as a consulting programming director and industry liaison for the balance of 2015, and then take on full responsibilities of program director at the beginning of the 2016 festival planning cycle.
“After 15 years as a film critic, I became increasingly intrigued by the film festival world and what makes compelling film programming,” said Puig. “Some of the best and most original movies I’ve seen have made their debut at film festivals. Joining the Napa staff is especially exciting - only in its fifth year, the Napa Valley Film Festival is growing by leaps and bounds with its ambitious, forward-thinking and innovative programming, panels and events. The combination of film, wine and a gorgeous location made this an easy choice for my new career path, and I look forward to working with Marc, Brenda and the entire Nvff team.”

Congratulations are in order to both the Golden State Warriors and ABC. Stephen Curry‘s squad earned the coveted Larry O’Brien Trophy Tuesday night with a Game 6 road win over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. On Wednesday morning, ABC was happy to report that these NBA Finals were the top-rated ever on the network, which has hosted the championship series since the 2012-2013 season. Per the very preliminary metered market ratings from Nielsen, the six-game series has averaged a 13.9 overnight rating, which is up 31 percent from a 10.6 for the 2014 NBA Finals. Last year’s best-of-seven series was wrapped up.

The opening hour of Justified’s last rodeo ended on a note that felt very much like a mission statement for what to expect out of the final season. It wasn’t just enough to have Dewey, Harlan’s county jester, meet his maker in grisly fashion, but to have it be at the hands of Boyd, a character who, despite all his past transgressions, is still someone we can’t help but root for. While your mileage may vary as to what fate you think Boyd deserves, taking Dewey out of the equation could have marked a major tonal shift for the series. Every village needs an idiot, after all, so with Dewey gone, there came a question of how many of its final hours Justified wanted to devote to yucking things up.
“Cash Game” is a less impactful hour of Justified than the one that preceded it, but...

On October 7, 2010, the San Francisco Giants began the march towards their first World Series championship in 56 years, and Robin Williams was there.
It was just before Game 1 of the National League Division Series, and the Giants were set to take on the Atlanta Braves. Williams – who had lived to in nearby Marin County since high school – stood behind home plate at San Fran's At&T Park, with a black Giants cap on his head and a microphone in his hand, and belted out a modified version of one of his signature lines: "Gooooood Evening,...

Nintendo’s latest addition to the Mario Kart series will be with us on the 30th of May, and has 7 additional shelled racers available.
The latest Nintendo Direct brings us the great news that Mario Kart 8 will be available on the Wii U from the 30th of May. It is also exciting to find out that the Mario Kart roster will be getting 7 new additions; Bowser’s Koopalings.
The Koopalings appear as bosses in a variety of Snes mario games and still bear resemblance to their 16-bit former-shells. It was once thought that the Koopalings were the children of Bowser but Shigeru Miyamoto cleared up the confusion in 2012 during an interview with Game Informer, stating "our current story is that the Koopalings are not Bowser's children.”

Parks and Recreation celebrated its 100th episode last night. But rather than mark the milestone with a guest-filled blowout, the NBC comedy focused on a major turning point for its main character, the endlessly optimistic Leslie Knope. Losing her dream job as a city councilwoman, Knope, declining one final plan to stay in power, ultimately agreed to set her sights higher – state senate, a federal job, congress . . . anything above Pawnee, Indiana. And with Leslie ready to move on from her beloved hometown, it might be the beginning of the end for Amy Poehler and Co.

The still un-subtitled Star Wars sevenquel just received an official release date. If all goes as planned, J.J. Abrams will reboot his second straight Star franchise on Dec. 18, 2015. The key line being “if all goes as planned.” First announced just a little over a year ago, the new Star Wars film sits at the uneasy nexus of corporate ambitions: It’s the first step in a larger plan to revitalize one of the most popular franchise in the last half-century of fictional media, with an earnings potential of several billion dollars at stake.
There’s a lot on the line.

So far, The Mentalist season 6 has taunted viewers with a tense thriller of a mystery. Each week is filled with edge of your seat expectation as we're teased with more clues to the diabolical serial killer's identity.
"Wedding in Red" not only continued the trend, but added a little fun and romance into the mix. What more could you ask for?
Grace playing with Benjamin in the opening scene was quite a telling moment. It clearly showed that she was all in when it came to not only being a part of Wayne's life, but of also being a family. And her intentions when she brought up the change in Cbi policy were far from subtle. There even letting agents get married. If Wayne didn't get the hint from that conversation, I'm not sure what more she could have done.

Jimmy steered his 72-foot catamaran to victory on Sept. 25 beating out Emirates Team New Zealand in the San Francisco Bay yachting competition. This is a huge deal and such an exciting win for Team USA!
Jimmy Spithill and his men should be very proud of themselves right now! The team owned by billionaire Larry Ellison, had a shaky start after being docked points for illegally modifying boats during warmups, but they prevailed as they raced around the Golden Gate Bridge on that windy day.
Oracle Team USA Wins America’s Cup
The catamarans, which cost over $100 million to make and upkeep, and race at speeds of up to 50 mph, compete in a race like no other.
When the Oracle won the race, just 44 seconds ahead of Team New Zealand, Larry jumped on board and sprayed the team with champagne.

"Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" is considered by many to be the greatest Star Wars game ever made. Now, ten years after its initial release on PC and Microsoft's original Xbox, the beloved RPG is bringing the lightsaber wielding action to iPad.
For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of experiencing Kotor, the game is set four thousand years before the formation of the Galactic Empire and the arrival of Darth Vader. Hundreds of Jedi Knights have fallen at the hands of the Sith and players begin the game as the last hope for the Jedi Order. Sounds fun, right? It is.
I myself have not had the pleasure of playing the game on in its new tablet form, but a review sneakily posted on IGN this morning was pretty favorable. Though there are bound to be some issues with touchscreen controls, but the review...

It's a bit frustrating when you're right in the middle of a round of Mario Chase and the Wii U Gamepad battery decides to go dead. But things may be looking up, as Nintendo recently introduced an upgraded internal battery for the Wii U Gamepad... In Japan.
The new battery apparently takes the place of the original in the back of the Gamepad, bumping the power up to 2,500 mAh from 1,500 mAh, and boosting battery life from 3-5 hours up to 5-8 hours of charge. Sadly, for the time being anyway, it looks like the upgraded battery is only available to Wii U owners in Japan. Nintendo wouldn't confirm or deny whether the new battery would be coming to the North America.
In addition to the Wii U battery boost, Nintendo Japan has also revealed a battery upgrade for the original Wii remote. The package includes the new battery, backplate and a charging stand.

It's the team-up of the year, as the nasty Dr. Eggman and Sonic the Hedgehog join forces to stop the Deadly Six in the upcoming "Sonic: Lost World." Thankfully, players won't have to enter the fight alone, as Sega has revealed new multiplayer modes being introduced in the Nintendo exclusive.
As the "Sonic: Lost World" story goes, Dr. Eggman was trying to harness the power of the Deadly Six, but he has apparently failed. Thankfully, Sonic has decided to step in so the unlikely duo can face the maniacal creatures head-on. Sonic will use some sweet new parkour moves and improved Color Powers to run, jump and race through ever-changing terrain as hunts down the nogoodniks.
Alongside the interesting single-player campaign, the Wii U and 3Ds exclusive will also include a variety of competitive multiplayer modes. Not many details were shared on what these modes will actually consist of, but...

Did you vote for your favorite Black Ops 2 personlization pack? I hope so, because the winning designs have been revealed. Unfortunately, no one thought the comic book-inspired design was as cool as I did. On the upside, the designs that won are definitely pretty nifty.
First up is the the Cyborg pack (above), which gets all robot-y with a very Deus Ex feeling orange, black and grey camo scheme. The next winner is the Dragon pack (below), which I'm sure you can imagine adds a scaly, red dragon design scheme to your favorite weapon.
Luckily, the Black Ops II personalization packs don't deliver gun camo alone. In addition to flashy designs on your weapon, packs also include a matching playercard and three themed recticles for the different sights available on each gun. The packs cost 160 Microsoft Points each (about 2 bucks?), and can be purchased through the Call of Duty store in-game.

Keen-eyed NeoGAF user Vert Boil spotted several titles from publisher EA on Xbox Live whose online passes had gotten a major discount: if you want to hop onto the the Cerberus Network with "Mass Effect 2," well, you're in luck because it and ten other titles' online passes have gone free.
The move follows EA's announcement earlier this month that they would discontinue the practice of charging for a separate pass to go online with its multiplayer titles.
Explaining the move in a comment to Game Informer, EA's corporate communications department said:
As we discontinue Online Pass for our new EA titles, we are also in the process of eliminating it from all our existing EA titles as well. We heard the feedback from players and decided to do away with Online Pass altogether.

If you read my App of the Week impressions on Frogmind's "Badland" you already know I'm a fan and, just as the team promised, more levels have now been added to eerie side-scroller. At launch we were introduced to Day 1 of the little black critter's adventure. The new update sees the dawn of Day 2.
"Badland" initially launched with 40 complete stages, spread across Dawn, Noon and Dusk sections. Update #2, which was just released yesterday, takes the total number of levels up to 50, adding 10 Dawn stages to the Day 2 section. Thankfully, unlike other games, "Badland" doesn't expect players to pay for the new levels. To add them to your game all you have to do is head to the App Store and download the latest update.
As expected, these new stages, which you can get a peek at in the video above, aren't the last we'll be seeing from the team at Frogmind.

It’s no secret that Nintendo is not in great shape. It’s not in bad shape. The Wii U ain’t the GameCube. But the Wii U also ain’t the Wii; sales of the new console are off-pace with the Wii’s launch, and Nintendo’s president recently apologized for the dearth of new titles. The beloved videogame company needs a hero. And so, Nintendo has taken the unusual step of declaring that 2013 will belong to one of its oldest characters. “Who is it?” you ask. “Mario? Link? Samus? Star Fox, but like, pretending that there hasn’t...

Give us a cut of Ace Attorney that clocks in at say, 90 minutes, and it would probably be gold. There's a lot to like about director Takashi Miike's take on the first game in the long-running series. What trips the ultimately enjoyable adaptation up is that it wears out its welcome at 135 minutes, and coupled with structural problems inherent in every courtroom setup requiring Phoenix Wright to delay for time, it feels like the movie overstates its case by the one hour mark.
As such things goes, Ace Attorney (Gyakuten saiban) is very faithful to the source material, the 2001 Gba title. That game, and the movie see awkward but well-coiffed defense attorney Phoenix Wright embroiled in a series of murder cases where he has to piece together contradictions to evidence and testimony from the prosecution, typically embodied by unscrupulous lawyer for the state and former childhood friend of Wright's,...

Who’s ready to see Burn Notice tonight? Fuck Yeah It's Summer On TNT. Here's to hoping the Western Conference Finals go to seven games, because the two best shows of June, Inside the NBA and Franklin & Bash need to run concurrently for as long as humanly possible.
That's right: The season two premiere of Franklin & Bash, TNT's glorious bro-lawyer buddy dramedy, aired last night to rave reviews. Fine, I didn't read any other reviews because I'm functionally illiterate. But I'm a real good guesser, and even a well-trained monkey can bang out a recap every now and then, so let's get started.
We open with a trademark FnB stunt, with Jared Franklin in a water tank to demonstrate that FnB's magician client was misled by the company that manufactured a faulty escape level. Score another win for the baddest boys in litigation!
So. What does Stanton Infeld, the esoteric patriarch of uptight corporate law firm Infeld-Daniels do?...

Last week Replay Games' remake of the original Leisure Suit Larry headed by series creator, Al Lowe, surpassed its Kickstarter goal of $500,000 with $674,232 (including Paypal). Unfortunately, those hoping Leisure Suit Larry would come early will have to hold on a little longer.
Originally expected to be released around October this year, development has been pushed back to early 2013. Turns out extra money means more cool stuff, but also means it'll take more time to make.

Doug: “Doug is a likable, unthreatening It guy. He is incredibly resourceful and painfully logical, in a way that only It guys can be. When he gets mad he is more likely to do something passive-aggressive than to get in anyone’s face.”
“Episode one of a five-part game series set in the same universe as Robert Kirkman’s award-winning series. Play as Lee Everett, a convicted criminal, who has been given a second chance at life in a world devastated by the undead. Experience events, meet people and...

Magic/Bird is another sports pantomime from playwright Eric Simonson and director Thomas Kail, the team that brought us last season’s inert, NFL–approved hagiography Lombardi. That show was an unsteady errand of stat-recounting and statue-polishing, with some basic bio-drama tricks thrown in (an invented narrator here, a speculative drama there). Magic/Bird is much better, mostly because it uses the dynamic eighties rivalry between basketball superstars Earvin “Magic” Johnson (Kevin Daniels) and Larry Bird (Tug Coker) as its mainspring. But it still can’t conceal what it is: an animatronic Epcot pavilion seemingly designed and operated by the NBA. Edited together like a highlight reel (complete with a Coldplay song), Magic/Bird steers us gently but firmly from 1979 — when Bird and Johnson ignited their long contretemps in the Ncaa Championship Game — to the early nineties, when both their careers came crashing to a close: Bird benched by his chronic back problems,...

Bethesda Game Studios The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
It took nearly all of 2011 to find the year’s best game, but once I played the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in November, the choice was obvious. Just in time for the holiday season, Speakeasy gives you Skyrim and the rest of our top 10 console games of the year.
1. Skyrim (Bethesda Studios)
I’m not a big fantasy or role-playing gamer, but as I wrote in my original review, the Bethesda Studios game celebrates the genre.

American Horror Story Review, Season 1, Episode 7, “Open House”
Written by Brad Falchuck
Directed by Tim Hunter
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et on FX
For the past two weeks, American Horror Story was a decent show. Some weird moments popped up occasionally, but the majority of the episodes were respectable. This week’s episode, “Open House,” tries to strip away any of that earned dignity.
“Open House” is ridiculous. Yes, the show often has flaws in exposition and story, but this episode goes beyond technical missteps. Almost every scene dissolves into a laughable and bizarrely unmotivated mess. The unfocused plot touches on Vivien’s attempts at selling the house, Larry’s true past, Constance’s other son, a reanimated baby and the Violet/Tate relationship. It’s a junkyard of unrelated points that the episode squeezes into forty minutes.
The one-dimensional guest stars border on screwball and bring down the rest of the cast.

Thanks to his own screw-up with a routine grounder in the softball championship game, Larry David found himself able to commiserate with Bill Buckner on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' (Sun., 10Pm Et on HBO).
Buckner famously made a similar fielding error in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series for the Boston Red Sox that cost them the game.
Buckner was game to come on and make fun of his legacy a bit, when he again missed a routine toss of a baseball Larry had gotten signed for Jeff's birthday, on behalf of Susie. Maybe he agreed to it because they wrote in a bit of redemption for him as well.

The most hardcore of the "Call of Duty" fans certainly didn't miss last week's long-awaited news of a second map pack for "Call of Duty: Black Ops." The reveal wasn't official though, coming instead from an accidental website posting by the UK video game retailer, Game. Not that there was any doubt, but we've got some good news for you today: it's official now!
Microsoft's Xbox Live community guy, Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb posted the news today on his website. The Escalation map pack is set to arrive on Tuesday, May 3. As we learned last week, there will be four competitive multiplayer maps plus one as-yet-unnamed new map for the game's survival-based Zombies mode.
The press release says of the new maps: "In Multiplayer, battle it out in Hotel, on the roof of a Cuban luxury hotel and casino against the vivid backdrop of old Havana; Convoy delivers intense, close-quarters...

And the Beastie Boys' Mix Master Mike fit the bill: 'I always loved what he was about,' Barker tells MTV News.

Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross may be getting the lion's share of the publicity on the I Am Still Music Tour, but venue after venue, Travis Barker has been rocking the stages too. Hip-hop's favorite drummer just released his long-awaited solo debut, Give the Drummer Some, last month, and he's brought a friend along on tour to help keep his album cuts fresh.
The Blink-182 drummer enlisted the Beastie Boys' DJ, Mix Master Mike, for his set. For Barker, his choice in DJ was all about finding a worthy successor to his friend and collaborator, Adam "DJ Am" Goldstein, who died of a drug overdose in 2009.

Buzz Bissinger received a torrent of abuse for saying the NBA's popularity is declining without white superstars. Now comes Jimmer Fredette, who's dominating March Madness chatter not because he's the best-but because he's white.
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a column about the specter of race in the National Basketball Association. I said the league's popularity was being affected because some white fans were turned off to a game in which there was not a single white American superstar.

It was not pretty. Most of the cuts have healed except for the one on my elbow.
I fervently believe what I wrote. There was supporting evidence I should have put in but did not because a column is an opinion and space isn't unlimited at The Daily Beast. I have since discovered more compelling evidence.
