A good movie full of wry humor (at first)
atombee25 October 2006
I've never seen a movie from the Netherlands before ... most Scandinavian movies I've seen have been dark, depressing, full of existential angst ... this movie is quite fun, kind of weird ... extremely well-acted (even with sub-titles) ... a very pleasant surprise.

Actually, I wrote the preceding before the movie turned really dark ... depressing ... full of existential angst ...

they are all the same ... still worth watching though ...

i think they should do an American remake with kevin federline as the man, rosie o'donnell as his wife, and courtney love as the tutor/love interest. is that enough lines?

you are witnessing the hilarious situation of a remote, pathetic couple to a tricky and scary menage a trois...

Those who've seen De Jurk are probably used to the style and v the kind of humor.

On the slow rhythm brought by the fresh early mornings on the (so flat) Dutch countryside, you are witnessing the hilarious situation of a remote, pathetic couple to a tricky and scary menage a trois... The actors are excellent and their scarce words take you to intrigue, laughter as well as disgust and horror. Warmerdam plays with his characters' fantaisies and perversities and in fact with the spectator's as he leaves so much to imagine...

An excellent cinema experience for a great movie !

lust, jealousy, murder
QQQ5 July 2001
Maybe Alex van Warmerdam's best film so far. What is it about? Lust, passion, jealousy, murder; about lengths a woman can go to to get what she yearns for. A drama, yes; but also the funniest film I saw in years (the humor is a bit dark but it's fine with me) The three actors are excellent and Alex himself as Brandt is fantastic. A surrealist, eccentric and sad tale about family life.

Lovable characters in a bizarre movie
Edding8929 May 2008
A funny movie? Not quite so. It begins pretty normal but becomes more and more bizarre and eventually culminates in a bang which releases the viewer into his/her reality. The characters are brilliant, the timid and frail girlfriend/teacher on one hand and the scary and dominant wife/'sister' on the other. In between the husband like a ping-pong ball being played with by the two females. The movie's pace is slow but sufficiently fast to push the story forward. The turn it takes might appear kinky to some but due to the careful evolvement the story stays plausible. Taking place in one location and sticking to the three main characters the movie appears like a nice intimate play which one needs to get into it to fully enjoy.
