A rare gem which brilliantly exposes its timely themes

This is an outstanding film. It touches upon urgent, important and often taboo themes, seldom explored. And it does so in a brilliant way, without shocking or alienating the audience, something the themes themselves usually do. Technically and artistically, the film is uniformly excellent. The plot is very good, and its ending is surprisingly refreshing and very unexpected.

Warning: Spoilers
"Alles wird gut" or "Everything Will Be Fine" is a German 85-minute film from 1998, so this one has its 20th anniversary next year. Writer and director is Angelina Maccarone and this is still one of her most known works today for sure, even with all that time passed. Then again, she really wasn't that prolific since then, for example she only directed one television crime episode after 2011. But looking at the quality of her work here, this may be a good thing and her age is not really an excuse for this garbage film we have here. Basically, you can summarize the film by saying that it is a collection of scenes that shows German incapable of dealing with young Black women. And even if people back then may have struggled more than we do today, it really is not an accurate depiction at all. One scene after the other, somebody makes somewhat derogatory comments about her origin/color, even if most of them do not even mean it in a disrespectful way, like the old lady saying that she speaks German very well. And at some point it simply becomes really repetitive and uninspired. Add to that a lesbian love story that makes no sense either. The protagonist wants to get together with her ex-girlfriend again, but there may be a new opportunity lurking right around the corner when it comes to her romantic relationships in the future. I would say watch for yourself, but I'd rather say don't. People often complain about badly written female characters in films, but here there is really not a single male character that has anything to offer. Then again, obviously the female characters are written badly too. Finally, about the romance here, the ending basically destroy this as well as there was the potential for an okay story I cannot deny at least with regard to that plot that at least for once did not include any racial references. But when we are supposed to believe all she wants is get together with her ex and then all of a sudden she sees her ex as someone disgusting (as do we, or as we are supposed to do) and she has no interest in her at all. This is not what would have happened in reality. Oh yeah, and the lesbian sex scene felt all for the sake of it and added nothing to the film except a desperate interest by the makers to lure people into watching this. Such a comment coming from a hetero male means quite something I can assure you. oh yeah and the drama afterward went strictly against the scene then when we are supposed to believe she is in 7th heaven. That's wall I guess. I suggest you do yourself a favor and stay far far away from this movie. A definite contender for weakest career effort by everybody working on it. Watch something else instead.
