- Ritesh (Jackie Shroff), a popular film star and his wife Pooja (Dimple Kapadia) live a wealthy lifestyle with their seven-year-old child Romi. However, after a series of unexpected box office failures and huge losses in a movie that he produced, he is hounded by creditors and consequently, the couple sell all their personal property and belongings. Frustrated and embittered by his career dive, Ritesh becomes an alcoholic. Pooja, who takes it upon herself to look after the family (sells all her family jewelry including her Mangal Sutra), works several jobs.
This leads to continuous differences between the two, and Romi (Master Makrand), their child, becomes a silent spectator to their constant fights and disputes at home. Pooja is frustrated that Ritesh simply wont go out to find work. He expects work to come to him like in the old days. Jagan (Satish Kaushik) is his assistant and stays with him during his bad times and helps Pooja with odd chores around the house.
One day, in a hotel where Pooja works as a chambermaid, she is molested by a hoodlum. A stranger called Alok (Anupam Kher) saves Pooja from him and offers her a job in his firm, much to the annoyance of Ritesh, who would prefer that she stay at home. Ritesh feels it is the last straw for him. He asks Pooja to choose between her job and her family and house. She leaves.
On Romi's birthday, he asks that Ritesh show his friends the movie "Aladin and the Jinn" that Ritesh acted in many yrs ago and was a silver jubilee hit. Ritesh promises, but has no money. He tries to borrow Rs 200 from his actor friend Vijay (Dalip Tahil), who insults Ritesh and sends him away. Finally, Ritesh resorts to gambling to win some money and throw a party for his son Romi. Pooja wants to meet Romi on his birthday, but Ritesh had given strict instructions at school not to allow Pooja, and refuses to let her meet Romi at home, saying that he is learning to live without her with great difficulty. A local Paanwaadi insults Romi about his mother having affairs and he cries to Ritesh. Ritesh creates a brawl and is arrested. Alok and Pooja bail him out. Pooja launches custody hearing against Ritesh for Romi.
In court, Ritesh admits that he is a drunkard, but also says that he loves Romi more and Pooja was nowhere to be seen during Romi's good and bad times. The judge asks Romi whom he would like to stay with, and Romi decides to stay with Ritesh. Ritesh wins Romi's custody (But Pooja gets full visitation rights). Romi starts feeling blackouts and Ritesh consults his family doctor, who wants Ritesh to arrange Rs 500 to conduct detailed tests. Ritesh again goes to Vijay. Ritesh is caught stealing from Vijay's closet and is badly insulted and thrown out. Ritesh soon discovers that Romi is going to die from brain cancer within the next 3-4 months.
Romi is mature enough to sense that something is wrong and he squeezes Ritesh to find that he is going to die. He asks Ritesh for 3 wishes, like in his Aladin movie. Romi's first wish is to go to Kashmir. Luckily with the help of Jagan, Ritesh lands a well paying acting job with a foreign production house. They go to Kashmir. Romi's 2nd wish is to go together with Pooja to a place in Ooty, that comes in his dreams very often. Ritesh meets Alok, who thinks this is a scam for Ritesh to ask for money to leave Pooja. Ritesh gives Alok all the medical reports and Alok realizes Ritesh is telling the truth. Alok takes Ritesh and Romi home, and tells Pooja, who is shocked.
To sustain their child's happiness and to take care of him, Ritesh and Pooja agree to reunite and spend time together, fulfilling all his wishes before he passes away. Before letting Pooja go, Alok makes them both sign divorce papers. Thrown together under the shadow of their child's upcoming death, Ritesh and Pooja, in experiencing the traumatic ordeal, rediscover themselves and each other.
They get to Ooty, but Alok also gets there. Ritesh and Pooja go to all places where they went when Romi was in the womb, as they figure that what Romi has been dreaming (images from before his birth).. Alok feels jealous that Pooja is spending so much time with Ritesh.. but Pooja tells him to back off as Romi has only a few weeks left. Romi's 3rd wish is that he wants to Live. when Alok pushes Pooja to finalize a date for marriage, she gets really upset especially when Alok indicates if they should wait till Romi passes away. Romi brings Ritesh and Pooja together. Ritesh wins an award for his part in the foreign film. He is a star again.
