More and less than expected
robertg-922 May 2000
This is a film with such an intriguing premise that I wish they had put more effort into the characters and story-line beforehand.

It has a very capable cast who over and over again pull the film up to a higher level than its really earned. In the end I was moved and touched by the characters -- even while I was aware of being manipulated. But as I said, the premise is worthy and the actors are really making an effort.

In the end it left me thinking, which is more than most films do. And it's always nice to see these actors in almost anything so there is definitely an upside to it.

Extremely good drama/comedy, real depth & compelling characters
jojarod19 April 2000
I just loved this story. It had very interesting, well developed characters with real depth that will steal your heart. I really enjoyed their history and friendship with each other. The deal they made leads them on interesting adventures with life changing discoveries. I highly recommend this independant film. I was extremely impressed with Michael T. Weiss and Todd Field's performances as well as the rest. Language and sexual content not extreme.

Man it sucked
calle7329 September 2001
This one is way too trivial and not thought through. It is about these four people from different backgrounds that make a bet who can get the highest net worth after a month in an unfamiliar city (Salt Lake City)with an initial amount of a hundred dollars in their pockets. All the persons are way too stereotypical. The "hippie" spur of the moment type guy has had a hard upbringing, the seemingly wealthy hotshot stock broker is really up to his neck in debts, the sensible one takes the hard but right way, and so on... It's a movie for people who believe in the personality types that were built up for *NSync and similar bands are telling the truth about the members of the band....

Anyway, no matter what their differences between the movie characters are, it's still just a test of how good their friendhip is. Come on... Whoever said this is original is wrong. This is too predictable. And too slow. And too stereotypical.

Excellent exploration of mid-30's men and enduring friendship.
AMcElvain2 September 2000
Net Worth is a very compelling story about 4 men in their mid-30's who make a bet to see who will have the greatest net worth after one month. The catch: they must all start over in a new city with no background, just $100 and the clothes on their backs. It's a marvelous exploration of how the men come to evaluate themselves and their relationships through this process of surviving as fish out of water. Most importantly, it never becomes sappy. These seem like real guys with some of the same issues as friends of mine, and the story feels kind of like "City Slickers" with an edge. Michael T. Weiss is riveting as Michael Winslow, a charming ladies' man. Daniel Baldwin is perfect as the smarmy stockbroker Robert Freedman. Highly recommended, and it will be appreciated by men and women alike.

Net Worth shows what happens when there is no Marketing Budget
jfischer-39 July 2000
This movie had it all - a great premise, plot, character development, believability, solid dialogue, and a script that kept moving forward. Very little wasted scenes that did not keep the story moving. Great Acting, a solid directorial job, etc. Every scene interesting. Every character interesting. One heck of a movie. It is a pity that apparently no one saw this film has whoever was in charge of promotion either 1) was asleep, or 2) had not budget to work with. I dare say that this movie is better than 95% of all movies out there. Jeff

I found it to be a testament to true friendship.
dajones324 June 2000
I really enjoyed the way all of the characters in this movie stood by each other through good times and bad, for the duration of their time in a strange city with virtually no resources. I also liked the fact that it was hilarious in parts. Although this movie was also risque in parts, at least the sex was not gratuitous as in some other movies.

One noteworthy detail in this movie which sort of reminded me of the premise behind "Clean and Sober" was Michael Winslow's struggle with alcoholism. I thought that Michael T. Weiss dramatized it very well.

An underrated movie.
rosebeall2 September 2002
I've watched this movie several times and feel it was an underrated movie. I don't remember it in theaters or being shown on TV, I got a copy from a friend who had it on vhs. It was interesting to watch four grown men go from self- serving individuals, to ones who truly valued their friends and to be supportive of them. Michael T Weiss gave one of his best performances. His performance in Jeffery was outstanding, he was still growing as an actor. The other three actors also gave excellent performances. I recommend this film to fans of M. T> Weiss.

This has a lesson about life and what's really important..
tocwa20 December 2007
I watched this movie thinking it was going to be just about four friends setting a challenge for themselves to see who would come out on top, but in the end, they all did. Each took a different approach; one focused almost solely on earning money, another made lots of intimate contacts, one was a hippie/explorer and the fourth, took the slow and hard path in his quest. Through all their experiences, the true meaning of friendship shone like a ray of sunshine upon them and they realized what really mattered. I won't spoil events in the film by telling you what happened, however I'll say this..the resolution touched me and made me wish that I had friends as close and good as the four guys had in each other. Nothing is more important in life than a good friend!

The true nature of friendship
EnemyOfTheState11 November 2005
This movie is an underrated classic and a must see for anyone who wants to know the true meaning of friendship.

Its a simple enough story, 4 adult male friends compete to see who makes the most money, starting from nothing in a strange city (Salt Lake City). Each goes their separate ways: One jumps head first into the money game, doing the hard sell the best he can, another gives all his money away and works as a mountain bike guide, another works as a bar tender and chases women and the forth, and presumably most sensible has all his money stolen by some thugs and is forced to live off the kindness of the others.

As the story unfolds this foursome learn a lot about themselves. We see, for example as the wild eyed anti-materialistic mountain bike guide actually has a more serious side and reasons why he is who he is. We see that the over-eager materialist is really more vulnerable than he seems, we see that the bartender is really weak and we finally see that the forth person is a lot stronger than he seems.

This is really a "guy" movie, but one that is not offensive to women or anyone. Its about friends finding out what makes them human beings.

Its a fun, inoffensive movie and one of the few movies I can watch over and over again.

very mediocre

Mediocre

This is actually a film that could have benefited from being more formulaic. It was meant to be as the corny "true meaning of friendship" formula but before the message was even spoken I got a feeling of bad taste. Here is the problem. . . just as I expected, the wholly unlikable characters do get their just deserts. In fact, I was begging for the predictable ending and I got it. Daniel Baldwin is just another talentless Baldwin. The rest of the unknown actors didn't exactly scored with convincible acting either (excuse me, not as Baldwin #4 is really known).

The writers and directors of this movie should be ashamed of themselves. Evidently, there is no other way to survive in town (literally what its about) but to sleep with the first woman who offers you a warm bed. The message is that women, if persuaded with the right line, are nothing but pure whor.s who are so insecure they would do anything to keep a man. Even the ones who find out they are about to sleep with a married man (innocent waitress at the restaurant, I bet the two kids without the father she had were the result of a fling with a married man). At the end we don't even find out what happens to all the slutty women in the movie. The director just treats them as the one, two night stands and drops them off as such. Shame! I am not a feminist by anyone's standards but that is one offensive message to all women. If that is why you want to come to the theater, I cannot discourage you. The plot is so predictable, the movie cannot possibly be enjoyable. I cannot recommend this film.
