Bad to the b-b-b-bone
Karl Self12 September 2008
German 1970ies softporn flicks aren't exactly renowned for their cinematic prowess, but few manage to undercut the cultural level of an obscene scrawling on the wall of a pub's men's lav so consistently.

Unusually for a porn flick, it focuses on the life of a disenfranchised miner with a slipped disk, a role that was wisely cast by the comely Michel Jacot (although he doesn't look anything like a disenfranchised miner with a slipped disk); he and his foxy wife are the two main, if only visual, assets of the movie. The story trundles on from one construed and joyless sexual encounter to another; the scenes are generally grubby, mechanical and unpleasant to behold; one of them shows an attempted rape, and all of this is doused with an intentionally obscene language and excessive alcohol consumption.

Unbelievable then that, during its day, this movie was one of the most commercially successful, and spawned no less than five sequels.

Bad as it is, this might be enjoyable to watch with a couple of (German) friends who enjoy extreme levels of crapitude. Or see it as a passionate statement for the benefits of gonzo pornography.

Not as much of a failure as I thought it could be

Warning: Spoilers
"Lass jucken Kumpel" or "The Miner' Wife ... Takes Her Pick" (okay no comment on that play on words) is a West German 90-minute movie from 1972, so this one is over 45 years old already, soon 50 depending on when you read this review and it was directed by Austrian Franz Marischka, who is also one of the writers here. If you have come across the name Marischka before, then you know what to expect here. Yep this is another of these many many German sex comedies from the 1970s. While Herzog, Fassbinder, schlöndorrf and Wenders were making quality movies, there is also a dark side to German film from that time and one immediately thinks of the many Schulmädchen Report films, but the "Lass jucken Kumpel" film series follows right next. Yes, this one here was successful enough for a whole lot of sequels being released, after all it won a Golden Screen, the award in Germany back then for films seen by really many in theaters and I am slightly surprised this one here received that honor too. Anyway, the film's title is said on several occasions, so I am not surprised they used it for this film. The last word is a German word for friend or buddy, but there is also a second meaning and that one is meant here, namely "miner". This is as of 2018 an actually pretty interesting reference that most of the male characters here are working in a mine because only 2 weeks ago or so, the very last mine here in Germany shut down and stopped being used, which was a bit of a big thing in headlines here. Now this still has nothing to do with me watching this movie I must say. As for the film itself, I think it is better than most German sex comedies from the same era. I would not go so far and say it is worth seeing because honestly the plots aren't good and same goes for the acting. But the characters are fun, there is some guilty pleasure to these 1.5 hours and also I think the women are unusually hot for a film like this. Most of the time they really aren't too attractive, but here yes they are there is no denying. And besides, there is even a brief political reference about characters talking about possibly fleeing to the GDR, which surprised me quite a bit, even if it was just one sentence. At the center of the film are Heiner and Gisela and we find out about their sexual adventures with other people, but hey I guess it is okay if both are cheating. And their pretty young son also feels somewhat rotten the way he is talking to be honest. Add to that fun characters like the old fella who gets horny by watching his female neighbor, the permanently horny Italian guy and a handful more, this is even a fun watch at times. But yeah, the fact that it is not as bad as most other of these sex comedies does not mean it is worth seeing, even if there were 1 or 2 moments when I considered giving it a thumbs-up and positive recommendation. But overall, it just isn't enough. My suggestion is that you watch something else unless you really love the genre.
