One of the most identifiable — and imitated — cinematic tropes is the "Kubrick Stare," a particular type of close-up shot used in several films by director Stanley Kubrick. It turns up in "The Shining," "Full Metal Jacket," and "Eyes Wide Shut," and to a lesser extent, "Lolita" and "2001: A Space Odyssey."
Those latter two films don't quite fit the "Kubrick Stare" mold because they were made prior to the "Stare's" concrete origin point: 1971's "A Clockwork Orange." Although Kubrick had used close-ups in a unique and piercing fashion since his debut feature, "Fear and Desire," it was "Clockwork" that perfected and defined the usage of the "Stare": namely,...

If there’s a better, more vital way to honor the late, incomparable Stephen Sondheim than Marianne Elliott’s superb production of Company, Broadway hasn’t invented it. This gorgeous revival of the Sondheim-George Furth masterwork at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, is, from across-the-board excellent performances and thoughtful revisions to the visual delight of a lovely and ingeniously clever set design, a gift both to and from the genius we lost last month.
With its attention-getting gender-switching premise bringing a freshness and nuance that’s nothing short of near-miraculous for a much-revived 51-year-old musical, Elliott’s Company challenges Broadway’s current production of 1955’s Trouble in Mind as the most dizzying time-warp experience on stage this season. Like that Alice Childress play, this Company feels both absolutely of the moment and timeless.

Screen Australia’s senior online investment manager Lee Naimo said it was pleasing to see online creators working hard to identify and then hook in their audiences with great characters and storylines.
“We can see great examples of this with new seasons of 2 Street 2 Racer and The Formal which both connected with viewers on YouTube and TikTok respectively,” he said.

Young Thug has released a song, “Tick Tock,” from his impending new album, Punk.
The track boasts big drums, big bass, and bright, buoyant synth stabs, with Young Thug peeling off plenty of sharp, often funny bars in a characteristically dexterous vocal performance: “He’ll give up his kidney/But Saint Laurent still tryna cease-and-desist it, woo”; “I always trust my guts/I’ve just been shitting with no flush”; “Gucci stroller for the kids, so what?”

I originally saw the Brian De Palma/Al Pacino version of Scarface (1983) on laserdisc in 1994 and again in a 20th anniversary theatrical screening in New York, but not since. Recently, I decided to have revisit it on Netflix and was amazed that I recalled very little of it. The constant use of profanity and the intensity of some of the violent set pieces, in particular the notorious chainsaw scene, are tamer than the language and the most violent moments of HBO’s The Sopranos (1999 – 2007) and Showtime’s Brotherhood (2006 – 2008). However, in 1983 Universal Pictures was prompted to release the film with the following caveat in the newspaper ads when the film was released in December: “Caution – Scarface is an intense film both in its use of language and depiction of violence. We suggest mature audiences.” While one might think this was a...

Like clockwork (which is to say every three years) we get a new Dardenne brothers movie. If it’s been two since Young Ahmed and we shouldn’t expect an announced film to arrive for another year… we’re not here for basic arithmetic, so let’s just get to the point: Cineuropa report the duo just earned funding, via the Wallonia-Brussels Federation Film and Audiovisual Centre’s Film Selection Committee, for Tori et Lokita, which “will look back on the friendship uniting two youngsters who have travelled alone from Africa and find themselves contending with the cruel conditions of their exile in Belgium.”
Per Dardenne standard, “new faces” will be at the center of casting that, once complete, makes way for a summer shoot. Expect this at Cannes 2022 with an award to follow.
It was also noted last week that Ryūsuke Hamaguchi will follow his fantastic Asako I & II...

I admit it, I’m a sentimental old fart. I get choked up and maudlin very often, when I think of family and friends, a moment in time when I realized the tragedy life can bring to us, or the joy. I tear up at the movies regularly, or reading certain passages in books. But I never thought I would weep at the loss of a video system. If you read We Are Movie Geeks regularly you must be aware of the video revolution of the 1980s, when VHS players and recorders found a place in almost every home in America. I hope you recall the early days when VHS was neck and neck with Betamax, a technically better system. Remember the days of Mom and Pop video rental stores when almost anyone could open a store front, and with a collection of VHS tapes start making money? As one of the many,...

Time and the finite nature of it is an essential ingredient in all suspense films. So I need to get myself on the clock when it comes to Zero Dark Thirty. I was shocked at how quickly we knew of its existence post Hurt Locker but then... it never seemed to come. It still feels like something off in the very distant future set in the very recent past. But it actually opens in 66 days. Tick tock.
Let's break down the trailer...

At the very least it'll make an interesting comparison point to Showtime's "Homeland". Jessica Chastain gets her first high profile lead role! Joel Edgerton That hot soldier with the glow stick I've been with director Kathryn Bigelow since Near Dark and I'm not going anywhere. I tend to love her work. And even when I don't, it's interesting. It looks far more beautiful, visually, than The Hurt Locker.

A new bit of Kanye West Music has made its way to the internet. "White Dress," a song off the soundtrack of the upcoming RZA film "Man With the Iron Fists," is a welcome return to the older, more thoughtful flow of early Kanye.
The snippet posted on Pusha-t's website sees West empathizing with his "baby," a woman who is trying to better herself and her style.
It's also a song about taking a woman from the nightclub to the altar (where she'll be wearing a white dress). RZA rapped West's hook in a red carpet appearance at the Bet Hip-Hop Awards. It goes like this: "I seen you in the club in a tight dress, but I picture you in church with a white dress." (Endearingly, RZA went on to explain the lyric's meaning: "So that's basically talking about, you know, some of these girls, you know, you want...

Exclusive: Gaumont International Television, the independent TV studio behind upcoming series Hannibal on NBC and Hemlock Grove on Netflix, has signed a deal with ABC for another potential straight-to-series project, James Patterson’s Bennett. The drama, based on bestselling author James Patterson’s character Michael Bennett, has received a script- to 13-episode commitment, meaning ABC has ordered a script and if the network brass likes it, it will trigger a 13-episode order. Gaumont used the same model for Hannibal, which was written by Bryan Fuller. James Patterson’s Bennett will be written by Ildy Modrovich (Necessary Roughness), who will executive produce with Patterson. Patterson’s Bennett novels center on New York Detective Bennett, a character Patterson says was “inspired by the brave heroes of the NYPD”. As with any great comic book movie, Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" features its fair share of throwbacks to its over 70 years of source material. From overt reflections of iconic moments to the subtler winks-and-nods aimed at deep-cut fans, "Rises" is sure to please the viewers who have had their noses buried in Batman books all their lives.
Here are five of our favorite "Dark Knight Rises" comic book callouts. Major Spoilers after the break! Do not proceed without having seen "Rises" first!
Every Girl Loves Her Pearls But Diamonds Are Forever
Selina Kyle makes her first appearance in "Rises" posing as a maid working at Wayne Manor. (Indeed, her first scenes offer viewers a glimpse at the "Dark Knight" spinoff that never was, "Downton Batman.") Her mission is to glean Bruce's fingerprints from a safe, but along the way, she pauses to steal the late Martha Wayne's iconic pearl necklace.

Man, they are continuing to kill it with these Catching Fire casting decisions. Snapping up one of the film’s adult roles alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman, Pulp Fiction actress Amanda Plummer will be portraying District 3 tribute and former Hunger Games victor Wiress in the upcoming sequel. According to Lionsgate’s press release, “[t]he character’s eccentricity earns her the nickname ‘Nuts’ from fellow tributes, and though she doesn’t communicate traditionally, her observations and contributions prove invaluable in the Quarter Quell.” Personally, there’s no other woman we’d rather see mutely ride on a chariot wearing an outfit covered in lightbulbs. It just feels right.
Why is are we so sure Amanda Plummer will kill it as the unhinged tribute? Because, just like Psh, she has been honing her “unstable and/or vaguely dangeous’ shtick her entire career. We picked two of our favorite offbeat Plummer roles below as proof.

Lionsgate has announced that they've cast Amanda Plummer (The Fisher King, Needful Things and Pulp Fiction) as Wiress in the Francis Lawrence-directed, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
The character's eccentricity earns her the nickname "Nuts" from fellow tributes, and though she doesn't communicate traditionally, her observations and contributions prove invaluable in the Quarter Quell. Plummer is a solid choice to take on this role, and here's a little more spoilish detail on the character,
Wiress was a female tribute from District 3. She competed in andwon a previous, unspecified Hunger Games, (possibly the 56 to the 59th), and then participated again in the 75th Hunger Games. In the second set of Games, she was at first rejected by many to be an ally, except for Katniss Everdeen who wanted her as one. Earlier this year Jimmy Fallon introduced a new fake news segment to "Late Night" appropriately called "Night News Now," which harkened back to his days as a "Weekend Update" anchor on "SNL."
Now, a month-and-a-half later, it's back!
When Fallon puts on his special blazer, he is transformed into a deadpan anchor delivering news briefs (with an emphasis on the brief) at his desk. In this edition, Fallon takes a few jabs at the Gop candidates, presents "reports" on the weather and sports, does his "Tick Tock Tech Talk," deals with a graphics mishap and even finds time to do an Adele parody that's way funnier than it should be.
Also be sure to look out for Eugene Levy as Ed Lemer, an Economist who equates the current financial crisis to a pool noodle, and a special Rick Santorum treat at the end. Watch above.

Perhaps seeing fellow "Saturday Night Live" alum Maya Rudolph heading back to studio 8H to host this weekend made Jimmy Fallon a little nostalgic for his "Weekend Update" days, because on Friday night's "Late Night," he premiered a new news segment that feels oddly familiar.
"Night News Now" is Fallon and the "Late Night" crew's foray into fake news, with Fallon donning a special blazer and delivering news briefs (with an emphasis on the brief) at his desk.
But it's also so much more than that. Cramming the traditional newsdesk bits along with a comic's understanding of "Sports," a "Tick Tock Tech Talk," a "Traffic Chopter" report, a "Dateline"-style video feature about a bad smell in the office And a roundtable political discussion into just a few minutes is pretty impressive.
We think you'll find it's much sillier than "Weekend Update" and occasionally as deadpan as "The Onion News Network,...

So The Doctor's on yet another goodbye mission. Since bidding adieu to Amy and Rory at the end of The God Complex, nearly 200 years have passed. Now The Doctor's apparently facing the end of his days – note the word, apparently – by now, every man, woman, child, cat, dog, guinea pig, hamster and fly realised that The Doctor wouldn't die – you can't have a successful, long-running show and then just axe it without warning. Not even a cut-ridden BBC can kill off that indomitable Time Lord for good.
But hey – any excuse for yet another whistle-stop tour of old friends. Presumably, in the future, The Doctor will take this to the next level. He'll go out and buy himself a musty old copy of the Doctor Who A-z Encyclopaedia by Jean-Marc Lofficier and visit every last character he's met during his many lives – yes, right down to the bumbling Louvre Guide...

As 2011 swings around to its inevitable conclusion, the Rubbernecker feels the need (okay, you can call it an addiction) to fete this year's TV glories and gories. And there were quite a few of each. As you may know I have a fondness for the ticky-tacky known as Reality Television, I so love the term because it's so not anyone's reality I've ever known. So this recap will examine first the ridiculous... then the sublime.
Best Reality Show Of 2011 (and it is, actually, a Reality Show)
Hands down, this would be the Gop debates we've had occasion to scope in the latter part of the annum. I mean, what can one say? This has been such a delicious treat! And it's only getting more interesting as the wheat separates from the chaff. Only there really is no wheat amongst this motley crew... just chaff. I'll see you in Iowa next...

It’s been almost a decade since Robert Rodriquez seemed to conclude his Spy Kids trilogy with Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, with the stories of Juni and Carmen Cortez (Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega) reaching their conclusion in a star-studded adventure presented in crude anaglyphic 3-D – pre-dating the current craze. Yet following the recent Avatar-led 3D boom, the series has returned for a fourth time, the result being Spy Kids: All the Time in the World - marketed as the first “4D” film, with scratch and sniff cards (dubbed “aroma-scope”) providing the fourth dimension.
However the fourth dimension is not smell at all but time – and that is what the film is all about: how little time we have, how precious it is and what we should really do with it.
With the old spy kids all grown up it’s time for Rodriquez to introduce a new pre-teen crime-fighting double-act,...

Tick tock. Tick tock. That’s the sound of another book series coming to theaters.
In this case, the newly formed Mythology Entertainment has announced a deal that finds Supernatural creator Eric Kripke hired to write and direct an adaptation of the 1973 John Bellairs series of children’s horror books featuring protagonist Lewis Barnavelt. Deadline had the scoop. A description of the first book, The House With A Clock In Its Walls, follows:
Lewis always dreamed of living in an old house full of secret passageways, hidden rooms, and big marble fireplaces. And suddenly, after the death of his parents, he finds himself in just such a mansion–his Uncle Jonathan’s. When he discovers that his big friendly uncle is also a wizard, Lewis has a hard time keeping himself from jumping up and down in his seat.
