The Rose
dbdumonteil24 March 2017
Plot:the colonel is cross: his officers are more interested in the soirees of "the lady with a rose" ,a very attractive hussy (Betty Stockfeld, irresistible as ever)than in their regiment;ditto for the mayor who summons his town council in order to get rid of that woman who depraves all his male citizens.Three privates (Fernandel;Pierre Brasseur;Raymond Cordy)malinger to be sent to the infirmary to be able to go over the wall easier and to find girls. The M.O. knows only one remedy : castor oil.

You get the picture:we deal with "Comique Troupier" ,par excellence the coarse comedy of the first half of the French thirties :the military service, the barracks, the warrant officers, all this and girls too provided the French cinema with countless films which would sing the praises of military life.

Fernandel and Pierre Brasseur sing the usual ditty "La Mienne Est Bien Mieux" (Mine is much better)on a merry-go-round ;along with their pal (Raymond Cordy in the part of a bashful draftee, a forerunner of Jacques Villeret),they steal a waxwork dummy :a general .In the barracks, the military men mistake it for an officer in the flesh .It's a rather good gag ,although it quickly fizzles out.A panicky colonel moans: "when one comes out of the blue, one tells so"

A cock and bull story in which (check the title :the garrison in love)everybody falls in love and in which a divine hussy wins them all ,soldiers and officers, civilians and military men, young or old.
