The Motion Picture Association (MPA), the lobbying group that reps the interests of Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros. to lawmakers in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere, is bolstering its executive ranks.
Hunter Paletsas, the chief financial officer of tech and IP management firm GoDigital Media Group, has been named the new CFO at the MPA, the organization said on Thursday. He succeeds the MPA’s longtime CFO David England, who retired this year after more than a decade in the role.
The executive will manage and oversee the finances of the trade group, coordinate with member companies and manage the information technology team. Palestas will be based in the Los Angeles office and will report to MPA chief Charles Rivkin, who’s held the top role at the group since 2017.

After making names for themselves all over the world, Edm duo Adventure Club have announced that they will be returning to their nation of origin for a tour that will remain within the confines of its borders. The Made In Canada tour will be a collection of 16 dates on which the boys will be joined by supporting talent and fellow Canadian Vanic.
Canada’s role in the spread of electronic music cannot be ignored; aside from being home to the likes of deadmau5, the country has often served as an entry point for new styles to enter North American markets from overseas. The tour, which kicks off in Waterloo, Ontario on January 8th and ends in Vancouver, British Colombia on February 12th, looks to celebrate this legacy – even if mostly in the duo’s typically tongue-in-cheek manner.

Syfy knows they messed up. Now they have a plan to win you back. The cable network’s top executives won’t say this in such blunt language, but they acknowledge that somewhere along the line, the network missed an opportunity to have more great scripted dramas. It happened sometime after the name change from Sci Fi Channel to Syfy and the conclusion of Battlestar Galactica—the acclaimed series that was once mentioned by critics alongside titles like Mad Men and The Sopranos as representing TV's top-tier of storytelling. Once the weary Battlestar crew decided to settle on Earth in the show’s 2009 series finale,...

Fancy a scare of the unfamiliar variety? Then check out some of the finest horror movies you've never seen...
There are a lot of terrible horror movies out there. Possibly more than any other genre, horror seems to appeal to wannabe filmmakers who figure it’s easy and cheap to pull off a scary movie – and thanks to the success of many low budget horror movies, distributors seem to be putting out an awful lot of them. So I’d understand if you didn’t want to trawl through an endless sea of crap to find the few real gems amongst the cinematic slurry.
But I’m an addict, and keep coming back for more punishment. The payoff is that sometimes, very occasionally, you discover something brilliant. Here are 25 great horror movies that you probably haven’t seen, possibly haven’t even heard of (some of them don’t even...

Think of actresses who can convincingly play the Virgin Mary. Got it? Ok, who made the cut? Emma Watson? Chloe Moretz? Dakota Fanning? Mary was supposed to be about 14 years old when Jesus was born; otherwise, if she were older, names like Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet may have popped up.
But how about Pamela Anderson? Yep, that Pamela Anderson. Well, it's happening in Canada, and for a Christmas special, no less.

It's time to bid farewell to Penelope the big purple bus: MTV has cancelled 'The Buried Life.' The make-a-difference reality documentary series scored modest ratings for the network over two seasons, and 'Entertainment Weekly' reports that MTV "hopes to continue working with the team in another format." It's possible 'The Buried Life' could live on as a digital or online series.
'The Buried Life' was developed by four friends at university in British Columbia, Canada. Originally a feature-length documentary, they developed it with MTV as an inspirational TV series that could serve as an antidote to 'Jersey Shore' and official superficial reality programming on the network.
Basically a cross between the concepts explored in 'Pay it Forward' and 'The Bucket List,' the show's website describes the concept behind 'The Buried Life' as "Do cool sh*t and Help People.

After years in development hell, a television version of hit film and novel 'The Firm' is slated for a 2012 mid-season debut on NBC in the U.S. and Global in Canada. It's been 20 years since the book topped best-seller lists and 18 since the film added to the oeuvre of films that feature Tom Cruise running. It's hard to say if this time-lapse will be a boon to the show (at least it doesn't feel too soon, like a certain 'Spiderman' reboot) or a deficit -- does anyone care what the McDeere family is up to ten years later?
Maybe they will when they see who's in the cast for the small screen version -- it's a collection of some of the brightest, smartest and creepiest actors working. And I mean that in the most complimentary way. With Josh Lucas as Mitch,...

On the surface, it seems like the team is trying to make Rebecca feel like more a part of the group on 'Combat Hospital' (Tue., 10Pm Et on ABC), but she's simply not allowing them in emotionally. We thought their reaction to the spider incident was hilariously appropriate.
Rebecca started what turned out to be a pretty tough day by discovering an enormous spider in the shower with her. So, rather than run out of the room, or simply getting away from it, she simply pulled out a gun and shot it. In a war zone.
So it wasn't the smartest move, but in her defense the spider was pretty impressive and intimidating. Still, she didn't look too amused by the ribbing she got -- a full medal ceremony and a genuine Spider Combat Action Ribbon. If we'd killed that spider, we'd wear that medal with pride!

This weekend, both Canadians and Americans have something to celebrate. In Canada, we have Canada Day, and in the Us, it's the Fourth of July. It's only once a year that the neighboring countries have patriotic holidays so close together.
In a more TV-related vein, one of the less-remarked-on revelations from the WikiLeaks cables that came out last year concerned Canadian television. American policy analysts expressed concern about the negative views of Americans being shown in Canadian shows like 'The Border' and 'Little Mosque on the Prairie.' Apparently, the border guards and customs officials seemed kind of mean, and this had ramifications for American homeland security.
Frankly, I was more surprised that anyone was watching 'The Border' that closely.

The 'Rookie Blue' set is buzzing as the cast and crew work away on Season 2. The biggest change here since Season 1 is the addition of a toilet in one of the cells -- part of the painstaking efforts to make the show as realistic as possible.
The breakout hit from last summer is filmed on location across Toronto, but its base is here, inside a non-descript warehouse just outside the downtown core. Right now the cast is gathered in the briefing room as the crew films a meeting scene from every possible angle. While the rookies may not be brand spanking new, they still have a lot to learn. Season 2 has lots of curveballs in store, including the addition of Lauren Holly ('Dumb & Dumber') in a recurring role.

The hot afternoon sun is sweltering on the Toronto set of 'Combat Hospital,' a new medical drama that's supposed to be taking place in Kandahar, Afghanistan. As the sun beats down on the expansive set meticulously lined with shipping containers, a military helicopter, blast walls and a sign that says 'Welcome to Kandahar Airfield,' it's easy to forget we're standing in the middle of Toronto and not out in the sweltering Afghan desert.
'Combat Hospital' stars movie vets Elias Koteas ('The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,' 'Shutter Island') and Deborah Kara Unger ('Crash,' 'The Hurricane') in their first TV roles. This isn't the first time they've worked together -- they both starred in David Cronenberg's 'Crash' in 1996, and were thrilled to team up again.

The over-the-top squabbles and intense drama of the 'Real Housewives' franchise are coming to Canada -- more specifically, to the west coast city of Vancouver.
While there was initially some speculation that the franchise would be based out of Canada's biggest metropolis, Toronto, the series will launch in British Columbia. According to Shaw Media, the show is set to air on Canada's female-geared reality channel, Slice, and while Canadians are known for their niceties and politeness, we have a feeling this will showcase their darker side (yes, it can happen!).

There’s something about a swaddled baby that makes a mama happy.

Jon Cassar, director and producer of seasons 1-7 of '24,' took on a new beast when he wrangled the miniseries 'The Kennedys' onto prime time as director. Inherently contentious and polarizing, documenting the Kennedy family for TV was bound to be a button-pusher and divider of critics. 'The Kennedys' did just that; TV pundits fall on one side of the fence or the other, and viewers either love it or hate it.
AOL Television caught up with Cassar to set the record straight about numerous rumors dogging the production and presentation of 'The Kennedys,' from the allegedly doctored viewer numbers to why the History Channel pulled out at the last minute.

By now, you've probably heard a lot of things about the miniseries 'The Kennedys.' You've likely heard that's it's wildly inaccurate and that's why History Channel dropped it. Or maybe you've heard it spun the other way -- that it's too close to the bone, and the remaining Kennedys fought the production. You're probably aware that Katie Holmes plays the legendary Jackie O. and does a terrible job. If you've been following it very closely, you may also be aware that the series was produced by a conservative (Joel Surnow, '24') and a whole bunch of spin has been applied to that angle too.
All of these things are true, but none of them get the heart of what makes 'The Kennedys' so deliciously bad.

You know when a U.S. network reworks a European series (in this case, one from Denmark), it's going to be dark and brooding. AMC's 'The Killing' is just that -- unsettling, gloomy and melancholy. Starring Michelle Forbes ('True Blood,' 'Battlestar Galactica,' 'Durham County') as a mother trying to deal with the mysterious disappearance of her daughter Rosie, this is anything but light fare.
Filmed in Vancouver posing as Seattle, 'The Killing' is a 13-episode murder-mystery series, but with such a stellar cast and stark vibe, it ends up offering up more than your standard whodunit. We caught up with Forbes and chatted about her attraction to dark roles, how she channels such raw emotion and if she's ever going to take a break from the intensity.

Everyone into home renovation and fix-it shows recognizes the trademark overalls of Canadian handyman extraordinaire Mike Holmes. His down-to-earth and knowledgeable approach to contracting is easy to understand and very comprehensive -- two reasons why Holmes has released his latest books: 'Make It Right: Kitchens and Bathrooms,' and 'Make It Right: Attics and Basements.'
TV Squad caught up with Holmes in Toronto, where we discussed the problems these rooms can present, what tool every single person should have in their arsenal and what magical powers his overalls possess.

TV Squad is in one of the seediest strip clubs in Toronto, watching Lauren Velez from 'Dexter' chatting amicably with a tough-looking thug and a pretty young stripper.
We're on the set of the new A&E crime show 'Breakout Kings,' and Velez and company are gearing up to film an intense shoot-out scene. Created by Matt Olmstead ('Prison Break,' 'NYPD Blue') and Nick Santora ('Prison Break,' 'The Sopranos'), each episode follows an unconventional team of two U.S. Marshals and three inmates trying to catch an escaped fugitive.
The rationale behind the unusual arrangement is that "it takes a con to catch a con." In exchange for helping the Marshals hunt down escaped bad guys, the three inmates get a break from jail while they're on the case,...

'Degrassi,' in its various incarnations, has never been afraid to address an issue, no matter how taboo or culturally sensitive. In the past, they've featured abortion, sexual molestation, rampant drug use and even HIV/AIDS before it was "acceptable" to do so.
Now, Degrassi High has a transgender student, Adam, who is struggling with his first real relationship. In classic 'Degrassi' fashion, Adam is not singled out for his identity (though he was at first by peers), and the show treats him like just another teenager. Kudos to the show, but also to young actress Jordan Todosey, who plays the role with incredible accuracy and compassion.
TV Squad sat down with Jordan on her 16th birthday to talk about male idiosyncrasies, what's in store for Adam's romance, and having to chop her hair off.

Imagine 'Gossip Girl' without the money and glamour, 'Degrassi' without the PG rating, 'Risky Business' as a TV series, or 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' for the Facebook era, and you'll have an idea of what to expect from 'Skins,' debuting tonight on MTV in the U.S., and on The Movie Network and Movie Central in Canada.
The show is a U.S. adaptation of a successful British series, allegedly set in Baltimore, but clearly shot in my hometown of Toronto. Maybe the Toronto backdrop is what brings 'Degrassi' to mind, but the connection goes deeper than that. We've gotten used to TV teens being completely different from real teens -- they don't get acne, they dress impeccably, and spend their time fighting and/or dating vampires. As with early 'Degrassi,' the characters...

All you 'Stargate Universe' fans out there: haven't you always wanted to know what the cast thinks about the communication stones? Or what they would bring with them if they were really trapped on the Destiny? What about their favorite sci-fi shows?
Most of the cast of 'Sgu' assembled in Toronto to celebrate the mid-season finale, and TV Squad was fortunate enough to catch up with them. (Bonus points to any reader who can spot the error in the background of the videos.)

Think Canadians can't be repugnant, self-obsessed, or outright mean? Think again. While we Canucks pride ourselves on our multiculturalism and ability to accept everyone despite race, color, or religion, it seems that that stereotype is about to be put to bed. Put to bed in a filthy, disgusting manner -- to say the least.
In the classic Canadian move of ripping off TV ideas from the Us, we're adapting 'Jersey Shore' into our own version: 'Lake Shore.' Based in Toronto, the set-up is similar to 'Jersey Shore.' We follow eight clubbers/partiers as they fritter away their youth in orgies of booze, sex, and idiocy. And as hard as it is to believe, the Canadian version looks raunchier and even more hyper-sexualized than its American predecessor. It's as if any element of character-building or dramatic sensitivity has been stripped out (sorry,...

Canadian TV export 'Being Erica,' which follows the misadventures of a woman in therapy, is returning to SOAPnet for its third season. Erica Strange (played by Erin Karpluk) doesn't just "go" to therapy; instead, her therapist makes it possible for her actually travel back in time to relive the events in question. Joining Erica this season is Adam Fitzgerald (played by Adam Fergus), another time-traveling patient -- and more than likely a love interest.
TV Squad took a moment to chat with Karpluk and Fergus about what this upcoming season has in store, why this show seems to have international appeal, and whether or not romance blooms at therapy.

When we last left 'Caprica' (which seems like ages ago), things were descending into chaos. At the center of the madness - the suicide attempt by Amanda, Zoe's rebellious escape, the U-187 - sits one lynchpin of a character: Lacy Rand. Played by Canadian actor Magda Apanowicz, Lacy has grown from a background character into a crucial game-changer. Nearly every plotline hinges on her actions.
TV Squad caught up with the ever-gregarious Apanowicz right before the finale of season 1, and she is nothing at all like the subservient, malleable Lacy. She spoke with us about the upcoming season 1.5, how in love with 'Battlestar Galactica' she is, and what it's like to hug a Cylon.

Michelle Forbes is a rare breed of actor; ever the chameleon, she nomadically jumps from show to show, giving us just a taste of her ability. She then moves on to her next role to stun us once again. Most recently, Forbes played a maenad on vampire hit 'True Blood' and the icy Admiral Cain on 'Battlestar Galactica.'
One role that Forbes treasures is one you probably don't know her for, which is as demented psychologist Dr. Penelope Verrity in the second season of Canadian-made-and-produced 'Durham County.' It's a dark, dark role in an avant-garde show, and it mostly went under the radar.
TV Squad sat down with Forbes to discuss why she's done talking about 'Star Trek,' how she stays a TV nomad and why she wishes everyone knew about 'Durham County.

I remember when 'The Kids of Degrassi' first aired back in the early '80s -- I'm pretty sure I saw it in the classroom, the last refuge of an exhausted teacher in my downtown Toronto public school. I recognized the streets and even some of the kids, since my father lived in the area, and my mom was always sending me to artsy after-school programs. Even at that tender age, I recognized that 'Degrassi' was different from other television shows. Mostly I noticed that the kids weren't rich, good-looking or well-dressed.
Hey, in television that's already pretty out there.

There are some things that just don't seem to work on TV. For example, shows with an intelligent teenage protagonist. They get made, they have fans, they even last multiple seasons, but they never seem to break into the mainstream. Or shows about bands. It should work -- hot young people playing catchy tunes -- but ever since 'The Monkees', the formula has needed serious tweaking to take off. Another thing that doesn't seem to work on TV? Stephen King.

Last time we saw Aaron Douglas, he was walking off into the unknown as Chief Tyrol on 'Battlestar Galactica.' We may have thought that the Canadian actor disappeared, but he's been working -- a lot, by the sounds of it -- on 'The Bridge,' where he plays cop-turned-union-leader Frank Leo.
Just in case you haven't seen the promotional ad (which was played mercilessly throughout the 2010 Olympics), 'The Bridge' follows a young, troubled cop who grows more and more disillusioned with the corrupt police force. As he tries to right the wrongs going on around him, Leo becomes enmeshed in the complications of power. Executive-produced by Craig Bromell (who served as president of the Metro Toronto Police Association from 1997-2003), and set on the streets of Toronto, 'The Bridge' is a raw look behind the Blue Curtain.

Let's go over all the elements one needs for a Stephen King book-to-tv adaptation. Sleepy, sorta-eerie east coast town? Check. A cast of characters whose secrets have yet to be uncovered? Check. A collection of strange occurrences that no one can really explain? You'd better believe it. SyFy/Canwest's offering, 'Haven', which is based on Stephen King novella 'The Colorado Kid', has all these elements and more.
TV Squad visited the set of 'Haven', which is filming this summer just outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the towns of Chester and Lunenburg. These small, romantic-looking towns are playing the part of Haven, Maine, the central locale of the TV show. With harbors and inlets aplenty, Chester and Lunenberg are boating and sailing towns, which is a definite plus considering how big a role boats play in 'Haven'.
