Movie That Will Give You Goosebumps
vercavykuk7 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
When I've first watched this movie, number of details escaped my notice. But on second seeing, all the details fell in together and created a masterfully done piece of art.

First of all, the names of members of groups Anthropoid, Silver A and Silver B are not their real names - in truth, those are names that were picked for them as their undercover names, and when I watched the movie, it was one of the details that somehow escaped me.

Second, when I browsed opinions for this movie, quite a number of people were voicing number of doubts when it came to the scene where the church is already surrounded by Nazis and there is this one person that keeps on telling them that they should surrender and nothing will happen to them. That is actually a proved fact, described in quite a detail in several monographs detailing the whole Operation Anthropoid.

And as had been pointed before, the usage of Beethove's Fifth symphony in the end of the movie is definitely there to give you some final goosebumps, making you unable to listen to that piece of classical music like you did before.

None of the English language films dealing with the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, referred to affectionately by Hitler as 'the man with the iron heart', is wholly satisfactory and it comes as no surprise that the most effective version is Czechoslovakian.

Its director Jiri Sequens has been much disparaged because of his links to Moscow but this is generally regarded as his finest film. He believed that for dramatic purposes one cannot improve on History itself and has made this in the manner of a skilled documentarist rather than imposing his own style. Its sense of 'being there' is heightened by the stark black and white cinematography of Rudolf Milic and the fact that the protagonists are played by actors pretty well unknown in the West adds further to its authenticity. It is the chilling portrayal of Heydrich by an East German radio actor named Siegfried Loyda that lingers longest.

Sequens' knack for action sequences is evident in the Nazi attack on the Cathedral which takes up the last twenty minutes and which is brilliantly handled.

The power of this film lies in its simplicity and not for nothing was it admired by a certain Robert Bresson.

The ultimate accolade came from the most bizarre and unexpected source. Heydrich's widow attended the premiere and said "Yes, it was just like that."

They showed Stauffenberg how it had to be done

Warning: Spoilers
"Atentát" or "The Assassination" or "10 Uhr 30: Attentat" is a movie from Czechoslovakia that was released back in 1965, which means it had its 50th anniversary last year and some of the younger cast members are still alive today. The director and also one of the writers of this movie is Jirí Sequens and it is a definite contender for his most known work. The film runs for slightly under 100 minutes and is in black-and-white, which is not too uncommon for films from the 1960s. Of course, it has sound. There are several languages spoken in here on many occasions, so you may want to get a good set of subtitles. The plot here is about the assassination of influential Nazi politician Reinhard Heydrich in 1942 and what happened before and after that. The focus is clearly on the people who killed Heydrich and those who helped them, but still there is also something shown about the German side, for example about Canaris, a Nazi politician with his own interesting story and life. We see what happens before the killing, also how the assassins get to the location. We see the killing itself, shortly after being halfway into the film, and we see the consequences, not just for the killers, but also for those who helped them and also innocent people. The Nazis wipe a whole village off the map in their quest for revenge. I must say I enjoyed the watch here quite a bit. This story despite it being the only successful assassination of a high-profile member of the Nazi party is really not getting that much attention in films. Never has. Instead the focus is on Stauffenberg mostly in these kind of films or also on Elser more recently for example. Anyway, I believe this one can certainly teach you something new that you may not have been aware of when it comes to the years of Nazi Germany and World War II. Of course, not everything probably happened the way it is shown here, but it's perfectly fine. I don't mind creative freedom in writing. The number of main and major supporting characters the focus is on in this film seems perfect. It is not too many and those in the center of it all bring us pretty interesting stories. Really a lot was done right here and this film is definitely criminally underseen. It's a quality watch as the IMDb rating implies and I certainly think you should check it out if you have an interest in this historical period from 75 years ago. Thumbs up!
