Sale.
Extensive research suggests that this film was shot outside the store of Rothschild & Co on New York's 14th Street in April 1905 on a day that was set aside especially for 'bargains'. It's an event that is known as a sale, something that can still be found to this day if one is prepared to carry out some investigation to uncover when and where they are taking place. Rumour has it that such furniture outlets as DFS are known to have such 'sales' on very rare occasions (only once a year, although it usually last for 365 days).
The film looks as if it was shot from the top of the building across the street. The size of the crowd milling around outside the shop is quite incredible, and one can only imagine what thoughts were running through the minds of the sales assistants as they prepared to unlock the doors.
