Annie Girardot says in her autobiography that the filming conditions in NY City were absolutely unbearable for the shooting crew. There was no place for make up or costumes, they had to go into the public toilets, the same for sleeping, and Marcel Carné had to beg in Central Park to pedestrians to obtain extras. So he decided to get back to France and proceed the production of the movie in the Billancourt lot.
