A startlingly moving film encompassing the scope of family dysfunction in mid nineties America. Although made by relatively inexperienced filmmakers, these youth manage to capture the hopelessness felt by many in today's suburban culture. In a magnificent breakthrough performance, Ally Weinberg captures the broken spirit of Sue, the embodiment of middle-aged dissatisfaction. Also of note is a tender and graceful debut of Josie Hemmingsen as Emily, a unappreciated struggling artist trying to find her place in a unforgiving world. The only weak link in this strong cast is Tom Oszman. His boozehound is as formulated as a chemistry experiment. While the other cast members make explosions out of ordinary chemical combinations, Oszman barely creates a reaction. All in all, a powerful film that forces all Americans to consider their own Family Values.
