Shaw's Robin hood tale
Leofwine_draca23 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Another intriguing Shaw Brothers production, made right on the cusp of the studio's transformation into becoming the world's foremost producer of martial arts epics. This one tells a Robin Hood-style story of a masked robber fighting against corrupt authorities while romancing the ladies. The story has a little action but the template is set up for some epic moments that never really arise; in a few years' time things would have been very different. Still, good production values and an enthusiastic cast count for a lot; a young and chiselled Yueh Hua is miles away from what he'd look like just a few years later, and Ching Li is expectedly graceful. My favourite role goes to the great Ku Feng, making the most of his cameo as a prison guard.
