French filmmaker Laurent Cantet, whose 2008 film The Class won the Palme d’Or in Cannes in 2008, died on April 25 at the age of 63.
The acclaimed filmmaker was planning to shoot his next film Enzo, co-written by Robin Campillo and produced by Anatomy Of A Fall producer Marie-Ange Luciani, later this year.
Cantet’s agent Isabelle de la Patellière confirmed to French media the filmmaker “died this morning in Paris from an illness.”
The Class is a Paris documentary-drama based on a semi-autobiographical book by François Bégaudeau set in a French classroom about a teacher in a tough Parisian neighbourhood that starred a mostly unprofessional cast.

After years of rumors and speculation, Liam Neeson’s Naked Gun reboot looks like it is finally heading into production. Set to be directed by The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer, and written by Dan Gregor and Doug Man, fans expect a lot from this reboot. While many have tried (and failed) to update the franchise, and it’s hard to imagine anyone stepping into Leslie Nielsen’s iconic shoes at Lt. Frank Drebin, it’s pretty interesting that the team pairing on this is the same one that teamed on Disney’s much better than expected reboot of Chip n’ Dale’s Rescue Rangers. All involved are really funny, so if anyone could make this work, it’s them. With a release date tentatively set for July 18th, 2025, here’s everything we know about the Naked Gun reboot.
Liam Neeson will be the star.

Major broadcast and cable news networks released a joint statement on Sunday urging the “presumptive presidential nominees” to commit to general election debates.
The Commission on Presidential Debates has already announced dates, times and eligibility criteria for debates in 2024. While it’s too early for official invitations to be sent, the TV networks write that candidates who meet the criteria should “publicly state their support for – and their intention to participate in – the Commission’s debates planned for this fall.”

Passed over by France’s Oscar-nominating committee, but finding Academy favor nevertheless, Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anatomy of a Fall” has also become an indie champion in mainland China. Its success may hold lessons in a market that has become increasingly impenetrable to content from outside the mainstream.
It is increasingly rare for Western arthouse films to play in Chinese commercial theaters. These are increasingly dominated by local “main melody” titles, with a little room remaining for Hollywood franchise titles and Japanese animation. Nevertheless, “Anatomy of a Fall” released in China on March 29 and has garnered $3 million (RMB22 million) to date. The film’s director, Justine Triet, even made a visit to the country to participate in Q&As at several screenings.
Below, Julien Favre, head of film at Chinese distributor Road Pictures, speaks with Variety about the long process of getting it to screen.

2024 is shaping up to be a great year to be a horror fan and certified Sicko™ because every day seems to bring a fresh bit of news guaranteed to scare the squares. Michael Mohan and Sydney Sweeney's "Immaculate" is causing a moral panic among conservatives, "Late Night with the Devil" is allegedly bringing in dollar amounts that match the mark of the beast, and it was recently revealed that "The First Omen" had to fight with the Motion Picture Association to earn an R-rating after receiving five separate Nc-17 hits. During an interview with Fangoria, director Arkasha Stevenson talked about making the sixth film in "The Omen" franchise and the first prequel film in the series, which included a "long battle" with the MPA over the film's content.
Typically, when horror films are given the Nc-17 rating, it's due to extreme violence or gore, but as Fangoria found out,...

Dr. Dre set out to prove he’s more than a producer and a rapper in a skit filmed for Jimmy Kimmel Live! that aired on Tuesday (March 19th). While joined by his frequent collaborators Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, and Eminem, Dre gave the late night host a check-up in a spoof of the long-running ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy called Dre’s Anatomy. Watch the full skit below.
The sketch revolved around Kimmel’s penis — which is apparently lacking in the size department. To open the skit, Dre looks under Kimmel’s hospital gown and says, “What the fuck is this? This man has no penis.”
He calls in Dr. Broadus (aka Snoop Dogg) to take a look with the aid of a magnifying glass. Then, 50 brings in a telescope to help Snoop guide Dre through some impromptu surgery — only to find out that Kimmel came in for a colonoscopy.

Anatomy of a Fall actress Sandra Hüller could be making a roast for Akiva Schaffer’s The Naked Gun reboot, so how hot and wet do you like it? A report from industry insider Daniel Richtman says Sandra Hüller is in talks to play the romantic lead in the forthcoming comedy, starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s Lt. Frank Drebin from the Police Squad series and Naked Gun film trilogy.
In the Naked Gun trilogy, Lt. Frank Drebin falls in love with Jane Spencer (Lisa Marie Presley), an assistant for industrialist Vincent Ludwig, utterly unaware of his villainy. After a slapstick-ridden meet-cute, Frank and Jane form a heated courtship accompanied by steamy home-cooked meals, ultra-protected sex, and trips to the baseball field.
How Liam Neeson and Hüller’s characters cross paths in the Naked Gun reboot remains a mystery. We must also wait...

2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.
As I was speaking to academy members ahead of last Sunday’s ceremony, I detected a surprisingly robust amount of support for Huller. And many of those who had voted for her mentioned her work in “The Zone of Interest.” It really did seem...

The 96th Academy Awards were a resounding success this year. Anatomy of a Fall was one of the films to be nominated for Best Picture. Even though it eventually lost to Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus, Oppenheimer, the French film left its mark.
The writers of the film, the French duo Justine Triet and Arthur Harrari, became the talk of the town during the awards season. Not only did they win big at the Oscars, but the grapevine suggests that Hollywood heavyweights are trying to do all they can to collaborate with Triet and Harrari.

This time last year, Katja Cahill was taking a break pre-Oscars to visit “Banshees of Inisherin” breakout Jenny the Miniature Donkey — and her date (!!) — in a livestock trailer outside the Dolby.
“That was the best part of my Oscars, just getting to go hang out in the donkey trailer,” Cahill told IndieWire. “And donkeys have support donkeys too, so there were two donkeys there.” A frequent Oscars contributor, the costume designer crafted a glittering gold vest she described as a “blinged-out service animal jacket” for Jenny to wear on stage.
At the 96th Academy Awards, the self-professed animal lover once again brought her artistry to an attendee of a different species. Cahill dressed “Anatomy of a Fall” scene-stealer Messi the dog — who played Snoop for director Justine Triet’s Best Picture nominee and Best Original Screenplay winner (co-written with Arthur Harari) — in an oversized bow tie.

The 2024 Oscars have certainly been eventful. There were many significant wins that will be in the minds of the audiences for the foreseeable future. From Emma Stone winning in the Best Actress category for her work in Poor Things to Oppenheimer winning Best Picture, it is safe to say that the nominees this year were extremely strong.

The Oscars are done for another year and Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are newly minted Oscar winners for Oppenheimer! Overall, it was an expected and welcome result, with Oppenheimer also taking home Best Picture, while Poor Things star Emma Stone won a second Oscar, in a surprising, but well-earned result. Overall, it was the icing on the cake of a refreshingly entertaining edition of the Oscars – one of the best in years.
Right off the bat it was pretty amusing, Jimmy Kimmel made some pretty fun digs in his opening monologue, including some references to Robert Downey Jr’s checkered history (which he was happy to play along to) and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s genetic perfection (he ain’t wrong). Plus, there was a close-up of Anatomy of a Fall’s breakout dog star, Messi (who showed up despite earlier giving the award show the high hat...

Indeed, “Barbenheimer” defined the awards season just as much as it dominated the box office, accounting for a combined 21 Oscar nominations this year including Best Picture bids for both. But if “Barbie” won the box office battle between the two juggernauts with its almost $1.5 billion in global ticket sales, “Oppenheimer” has been the awards champion, sweeping best film honors from the Golden Globes,...

Despite two historic strikes, shifting release schedules, and the ongoing risk of coronavirus, Hollywood had a lot to celebrate at tonight’s 96th Academy Awards. If there was a message to take away from this year’s awards season, it’s that 2023 was a very good year for movies.

Another awards season comes to an end, as the 2024 Oscars named Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as Best Picture, beating out contenders like Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, and Poor Things. Nolan also won for directing, while Cillian Murphy beat out The Holdovers‘s Paul Giamatti for Lead Actor and Robert Downey Jr. received the win for Supporting Actor.
But Poor Things didn’t fare too badly, taking home four awards including a surprise win for Emma Stone, who was widely considered the underdog given Lily Gladstone’s heavily favored performance in Flower Moon. American Fiction also took home a well-deserved adapted screenplay nomination, while Anatomy of a Fall won for original screenplay.
Barbie didn’t go completely win-less, as Billie Eilish and Finneas won their second Oscar for “What Was I Made For?” (just after a jaw-dropping rendition of “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling and a whole...

The beloved canine actor Messi from the Oscar-nominated film Anatomy Of A Fall is reportedly not attending the ceremony. The border collie was a fan favorite and had even racked up some love at the Oscars luncheon with actors such as Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling. Fans of the canine stare were reportedly disappointed with the news.
While no official comment was given by the Academy, an insider revealed that many production companies were not happy with the way the dog from the film received attention from potential voters. The Oscars are one of the most anticipated events of the year as they end the awards season. Many of the past year’s nominees have the finale to end their run on a high as they campaign across award shows to win the coveted trophies.

The French legal drama thriller, Anatomy of a Fall, is nominated for five major Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director awards. However, the film will be missing one of its popular stars at the Awards ceremony on Sunday. Messi, the French border collie, played Snoop in the film and became America’s favorite after attending the annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon. This appearance also sparked controversy, which some fans feel speaks a lot about the Academy.

Devastating news for fans of canine cameos: Messi, the scene-stealing border collie from best picture nominee Anatomy of a Fall and unlikely star of the 2024 Oscar campaign season, will not return to Los Angeles for Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony.
Though reps for the Academy did not comment, a source at the Neon-distributed film says the French pup’s recent Hollywood sojourn, during which he overshadowed every human actor at the annual nominees luncheon, was a one-off. That means those A-Listers who didn’t get face time with Messi will just have to book a part in one of his future projects.

Normally this is the part where we take you on a brief temperature check on—if not philosophical flight of fancy over—the state of the movie industry and how that will factor into what’s occupying most of the real estate in Oscar voters’ heads. We usually delve into why in fact the whole annual spectacle serves just about anything but the purported task of rewarding the previous year’s best cinematic work. How does Parasite represent the best-case scenario for a more international AMPAS? Does Tár surgically unpack our anxieties about representation, or does it just exploit them? Why Green Book, why now? But seeing how Mark Harris, in this weekend’s New York Times, pretty thoroughly wrapped up that legwork this go-around, and recognizing that there’s only so many angles we can take to argue the functional utility that Oppenheimer has market-cornered in this year’s race,...

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! The calendar has turned to March and that means but one thing: *Doctor Strange voice* we’re in the endgame now. Taking place from February 29 through March 10, this popular annual festival showcases the verve, creativity, and depth of contemporary French cinema in a variety of genres. Oppenheimer took the top prize at the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night.
The film won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures, a day after taking top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Other big winners were Beef, which also won at the SAG Awards and Sunday’s Film Independent Spirit Awards, along with Succession and The Bear, both of which also won SAG Awards on Saturday.
Oppenheimer producer Emma Thomas accepted the theatrical motion picture award, noting that in a room full of producers, “This means so much coming from you, this room is full of people whose work we admire,” adding, “You know how hard the job can be, you also know how great the job can be; it’s the best job on set.” She also called director Christopher Nolan (who is also her husband) “the best producer you can possibly hope for.

Greta Gerwig arrives at a photo call for “Barbie,” Sunday, June 25, 2023, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles. (Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP)
When the Academy Award nominations were announced last month, much of the discussion focused on two so-called “snubs” for Barbie: Greta Gerwig for Best Director and Margot Robbie for Best Actress. Both seemed like locks, since Barbie was one of the biggest films of the year and had been generating awards buzz for months. Added to that, both Gerwig and Robbie would be nominated by their respective guilds, an odds-on sign that they would work their way into Oscar nods. And while plenty have chimed in on the Barbie “snubs”, now Gerwig herself has weighed in, championing her lead.
Speaking with Time, Gerwig said that she was rooting for a Best Actress nomination for Margot Robbie, who added far more dimension to Barbie than we could she ever expected.

You might not have known it, but The Holdovers is actually the feature screenwriter debut of David Hemingson after a lengthy career in television. But now it seems like the bug has bitten — and that bug is named Alexander Payne. Hemingson recently revealed that he and The Holdovers director Payne are teaming up, this time for a western.
Speaking at a recent post-The Holdovers Q&a (via Deadline), Hemingson revealed some details about the project, saying, “Alexander and I are writing a Western together, so we’re going to co-write something, and it’s set in Nebraska in 1886, and it’s like no Western you have ever seen before, because it’s an Alexander Payne Western.
