In the midst of war there was still enough money available for ICI to sponsor this Technicolor documentary about colour. The scientific information about how the brain perceives colour is fascinating as are the experiments to find new dyes. The film is beautiful to look at, thanks to the work of the great colour cameraman Jack Cardiff, and after restoration it's now looking better than it has done for years. The problems occur in the second half of the film, when the department of the bleedin' obvious takes over to inform us of how different colours can be quite useful. Remarkably one of the authors of the commentary is Dylan Thomas. It's likely he wrote the poems spoken by Valentine Dyall and Marjorie Fielding. The restored version premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2016 and if you missed it you should check BFI Player.
