Bullwhip Catfight!!
Steve_Nyland28 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The standout section of this ultra-low budget later period Spaghetti Western is easily the buildup to the climax of the film when lovely doe-eyed Marina Malfatti (she of the porcelain flesh from THE NIGHT EVELYN CAME OUT OF THE GRAVE) and Monica Miguel's sneering, oddly costumed Pistoleress have a duel using bullwhips.

Up until then I didn't "get" this one, which is a rather plodding tale about a gunslinger referred to as Sartana (Tony Kendall, minus his trademark mirrored sunglasses) who engages in the standard mission of vengeance to bring justice to the man who killed his brother/father/cousin/notary public (can't remember for the life of me). Along the way he meets up with Ms. Malfatti, who is kidnapped and "interfered with" by Ms. Miguel and her band of similarly strangely costumed banditos. For added novelty there is a Woody Strode like buddy for the movie's resident black dude, who also embodies the film's novel killing gimmick deal by wearing a vest of throwing knives. Aside from the bullwhips he is the most interesting thing in the film and his death -- phoned in from HALLS OF MONTEZUMA or any other buddy/action flick you care to mention -- leaves a vacuum in the film that is only filled by sleaze.

This is one of the instances where a stringently low budget kind of works against these projects: I love later period Spaghetti's but this one was sort of hard to follow, lacked energy and had sort of odd pacing. Kendall is good but one doesn't get the impression he has handled a gun very much, and the catfight scenes are actually more exciting than the traditional action interludes, which sort of shows the director acknowledging that there was something lacking. Maybe some sunglasses. But one interesting thing about Kendall's gunslinger: He doesn't smoke. Nobody smokes in the whole film, where Spaghetti Westerns are often all about smoking.

Below average Spaghetti Western with noisy action, fights, chases and gunplay

"Gunman of One Hundred Crosses" , which also was directed and also starred by Marina Rabissi along with Tony Kendall, Mimmo Palmara , Ray Saunders. This so-so Western contains an interesting but well known plot, violence, shoot'em up and results to be entertaining enough, though drags at times, balancing in ups and downs . An old man is killed in the wild West. His son Jimmy goes out searching for the killers of his father, but is soon ambushed by two highwaymen, and killed, too. Sartana finds him, and shoots the murderers and reads the letter Jimmy had received from his sister Jessica Dublin (Marina Rabissi or Marina Mulligan) telling him about their father's murder. She has a suspicious suitor, Frank Damon (Mimmo Palmara as Dick Palmer) who insistly wishes get married. The gunslinger brings the body to when his sibling is murdered ,but he is really seeking vengeance . There takes place a massacre and he escapes with the nasty hoodlums hot on their tail . The tough and rare gunslinger becomes an efficient Pistolero , acting as judge , jury , and executioner , meets the beautiful redhead a as he will later demonstrate), and sets out in a search for revenge against the killers. That will not be an easy task, and much sweat and pain must be endured, namely by Jessica, abducted, tortured and whipped by the very woman who started it all. By the end of the saga, Django will have justified to have a hundred cross marks in his gun's handle.

This Italian production is a moving S. W. movie with thrills, shootouts, violence, plot twists and the best scenes about a bullwhip catfight. The film deals with a mysterious stranger , Django or Sartana, depending on the film's version, who becomes an avenger, who vows to revenge a a beautiful girl from the dreaded outlaws ; and it takes on a strange gunslinger against treacherous gang led by Frank Damon. This Spaghetti movie gets the usual Western issues , such as greedy antiheroes , violent facing off , quick zooms , and exaggerated baddies . Containing an slightly interesting and violent plot about a stranger helping a distressed woman and seeking vendetta . It packs crosses and double crosses , thrills , shoot'em up , violence , and results to be quite entertaining , though drags at times , balancing in ups and downs . There is plenty of action in the movie , guaranteeing some pursuits , crossfire or stunts enough. It's a thrilling western with breathtaking confrontation between the protagonist against the heartless enemies. The pic is middlingly starred by Tony Kendall who began acting in a series of small roles ,and subsequently starring in all kinds of genres , such as : Eurospy : Agent Joe Walker Operation Far East , Kommissar X or Soft Kill , Death Is Nimble, I fantastici 3 $upermen , Death Is Quick ; Terror : The Return of the Evil Dead, La frusta e il corpo , The Loreley's Grasp and Spaghetti Western : Black Eagle of Santa Fe , The Pirates of Mississippi, I vendicatori dell'Ave Maria . In the picture shows up Spaghetti habitual secondaries with enjoyable interventions such as: Mimmo Palmara or Dick Palmer who played several Pasta Westerns and Peplums, Marina Mulligan as the unfortunate sister, Rai Sanders as her faithful black servant who is an expert veterinarian and knife-thrower, and brief appearances from Benito Pacifico, Xiro Papas and director Carlo Croccolo himself.

The motion picture was middlingly directed by Carlo Croccolo , under pseudonym Lucky Moore , and it was filmed in parallel with another spaghetti western: Matador Nego¨ or ¨Pistoleiro Negro¨ , or ¨Assassino Negro¨ or ¨Black Killer¨starred by Fred Robsham , Klaus Kinski and Marina Malfatti . At the time of filming, the leading actress Marina Rabissi (as Marina Mulligan) was the wife of director Carlo Croccolo. Carlo Croccolo is usually a secondary actor and occasionally filmmaker , as he has played several films as ¨After the Fox" , ¨In Love and War¨, ¨Three man and a leg¨, ¨Yesterday , Today and tomorrow¨, ¨El Avaro¨, Via Lattea La Prima a Destra , ¨Il Professor¨ , ¨O Re¨, ¨Perdono¨, ¨The Biggest Bundle of Them All" , among others . Rating: 4/10.
