Sex & Nudity

  • Lisa Garland, the nurse in the game, is shown in a V-neck hospital outfit.
  • Monsters (humanoid or otherwise) are rarely wearing any clothes. No visible genitalia, and the lower body area has been stripped of any anatomical detail.
  • No sexual content.

Violence & Gore

  • DISCLAIMER: Before you read this section and the last section, keep in mind the graphical capabilities of the PlayStation 1. Just because this game is from 1999 does not necessarily mean the content is just as violent or less violent. Less complex graphics may lessen the effect the game has on older audiences, depending on their opinions on retro/vintage gaming. Try to remember that this game was new at one point.
  • Damage dealt to the player or most creatures will result in a brief cloud-like blood effect.
  • Enemies and setting sometimes appear to be coated in blood (possibly rust in the case of the backgrounds).
  • Strange and twisted scenes contain horrid sights of gutted bodies, hospital beds with beds covered by a bloodstained tarp, both human and nonhuman enemies. Check the Frightening/Intense section for worse details.

Profanity

  • "Damn" is uttered a couple times, but that's about as bad as it gets.
  • Nothing really to note of, unless you are extremely religious.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Easily one of the creepiest and suspenseful games ever made.
  • Heavy use of disturbing and dark images throughout the game. Before playing, this warning should be taken seriously. Absolutely not for the faint of heart.
  • This game is considered a pioneer in the survival horror/suspense genre of video gaming, and the game puts its best foot forward in order to make sure you remember this.
  • The arrival of enemies is signaled by the crackling of static in your pocket radio. They appear quickly out of the shadows/fog.
  • The music in Silent Hill ranges from the unsettling to the screeching and panic-inducing. The few times the audio gets even scarier than that is when you hear absolutely nothing.
  • Some jumpscares happen, but rarely.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In one of the most popular moments from the series, a cutscene shows Lisa transform into a demon, as her eyes pour out blood, and she slowly turns into a monster. Very well done for its time
  • Dark, demonic/satanic themes surround the plot, featuring a demon that is literally trying to raise hell. At times, it appears to be working (see the next sentence). The in-game scenery transitions from a wintery fog in the middle of summer, with mounds of wrecked cars and massive chasms blocking you off from certain streets to a hideous, nightmarish landscape where the streets are replaced by paths of rusted metal grates with long-dead bodies in the crawlspace underneath, and the entire area is reminiscent of blood-soaked sheet metal.
