The streets in Silent Hill are named after famous science-fiction and horror authors: Richard Bachman (Stephen King), Robert Bloch, Ray Bradbury, Michael Crichton, James Ellroy, Jack Finney, Dean R. Koontz, Ira Levin, Richard Matheson, Carl Sagan, John Sandford, Dan Simmons, and F. Paul Wilson.

The developers used darkness and fog to mask the console's hardware limitations, which proved to be advantageous for the game's atmosphere.
A newspaper clipping explaining that a boiler explosion caused the house fire, which is how Alessa was burned, can be attained after meeting special conditions in the European & Japanese versions of the game. In the U.S. version though there was a coding error which prevents the newspaper clipping from appearing even after meeting the special conditions although the clipping's existence is still hinted at since you can still find the newspaper it was clipped out of.
In all versions, the opening says: "The fear of blood tends to create fear for the flesh", while, the demo says: "You will encounter a wall of darkness and the Wrath of the Underworld. These will help you".
