Good historical sports film about Ping Pong, Swimming, Handball and LaCrosse Warning: Spoilers
The first of a series of shorts called "Sport's Slants", this film was produced and narrated by the great Ted Husing, a pioneer radio sportscaster who was one of the first inducted into the American Sportscasters Hall of Fame. Curt Gowdy once said about Ted Husing: "The real pioneer and father of play-by-play as we know it today". The "Sport's Slants" films typically showcased some background in each of several sports for the viewing audience. In this film, champion players are shown in their primary sports, including Ping Pong, Swimming, Hand Ball and LaCrosse. The swimming segment is particularly interesting because it features Helene Madison, one of the most incredible freestyle swimmers of all time. Madison won three gold medals in the 1932 Olympics and set world records in twenty different distance categories ranging from 100 yards to one mile. Madison's achievements were eventually honored by picturing her on a 1990 U. S. Stamp. The segments of the film about Ping Pong, Hand Ball and LaCross are equally enlightening and should be viewed as an opportunity to see how these legendary sports were played decades ago.
