Kirstie and Piper deliver stunning dramatic performances
michelle110122 March 2000
At first you notice how brilliant Piper Laurie is in her role as the Grandmother - on second viewing the one who stands out is Kirstie - though her screen time is not extensive she gives a powerful and understated performance of an uncaring and selfish mother - however upon further inspection you see that she has trained herself not to care - and still does. I have never seen Kirstie do this type of work. Cheers!

SMALL BUDGET FILM DELIVERS BIG BUDGET RESULTS
djwills4 December 2001
An exceptionally unusual film, THE MAO GAME restores faith in modern film making. In a world of Shreks and Matrixes, this low-budget feature delivers beautifully finely-woven performances (except for Kirstie Ally who is good but unfortunately can never quite shed her Pier One Imports persona), a shattering subtext and some of the most breathtaking and creative imagery I have EVER seen. The story, basically about three generations of Hollywood celebrity, is so delicately and thoughtfully told that it often belies it's master carton of torn relationships, lost souls and drug addiction. Peppered with some occasional light "hi-jinx" and a fabulous comic cameo by Susan Bernard, I highly enjoyed this film.

This Movie is Tired and Slow
scottcavazos3 December 2004
I could not believe the good reviews that I saw on IMDb for this movie. Everything about it is tired. Kirstie Alley and Diana Highland play transparent characters. This may be the result of weak acting, a weak script, or both, but finding anything in this movie worth connecting to is very difficult. The characters stumble through a mediocre story that attempts to pull on the audience's heart strings but the whole fiasco just fizzles under the flaccid plot. Don't be fooled by the "Indy" reputation that this film attempts to hide under. It is not indy, it is just cheap. The divorced female version of campy sci-fi. The inclusion of music made by a British swing band mirrors the contrived nature of this lukewarm soap opera. A must see for anyone with insomnia.

By George!

Warning: Spoilers
Unusual for a movie-goer, to sit in a theater with the star of the show, unusual for the same audience members to party with the star later in the month, in iowa. Joshua Miller was studying at the Iowa Writers Workshop in 2002 when he (re)premiered his tour-du-force The Mao Game. The specifics behind the creation of this film, it's subsequent botched theatrical release, and then the contractual-copyright-Hollywood mumble-jumble-junk, for me, only adds to my contention that this film is a big F--- Y-- to the whole Hollywood system. Of course, JM does this through the medium the film but if you had the chance to do so, and to do so so brilliantly, you shouldn't be faulted for taking that chance. Speaking cinematically, Mao Game is an 7-8 and possibly a 9 when the background details compound with the film itself. While its been said before, this film is somehow an independent venture while it also gleans much from the Hollywood studio mechanism. I'm not sure how old JM was at the time, but as a first for the artist as writer, director, actor, i think it is quite an accomplishment. I hope we see some more ideas and stories from JM in the future. Since I saw this film around 3 or 4 years ago, I am losing my memory of the details, but I remember thinking it was quite good afterword. The film successfully tells the story of these three generations of Hollywood actors, but the same could apply to any sort of ancestry, only Alaskain Snow Crab Harvesters have much less access to rolls of 35mm film and the ability to draw Hollywoods stars. Yet for this reason, the film is also quite incredible because you get the sense that these people were willing to perform in this film, and that they decided and their agents decided to make time for this. Since I am not an expert on Hollywood, I am not sure, but I would guess that this scenario does not happen often. As a result it humanizes these stars. Toward the end, the bond that develops between grandson and grandmother strengthens as the end of life approaches. The Mao Game asks the question of "How do we care for each other?" Though the story does not give us the rules by which we should, it expresses through message and medium that we are so linked to our past and the care that was given to us at younger ages.

A very unique and interesting film
festrada5 December 2001
This was a very underrated film that should have been picked up by an independent studio and released to the public. I was fortunate enough to see it at the Seattle Film Festival and I was blown away by the film. It was excellently written and directed by Joshua Miller and featured first-rate performances by Piper Laurie and Kirstie Alley. It offers a unique look at living in a celebrity family and coping with the lows of life even when it seems like you already have everything.

I'm wondering if this gem of a film will ever be released on video or dvd. I would definitely add it to my collection.

A gripping film about relationships with a son and his mother and grandmother.
Wildlife6 June 1999
Joshua Miller's first attempt at directing is excellent! He made the film entertaining from beginning to end. I think Piper Laurie's work was oustanding! She made the character seem real. Kirstie Alley's performance was her best ever! She played her role so well it seemed effortless.

I want to see this movie
donnabeautibiz31 December 2022
I want to see this movie I've never been able to see it. I was actually a movie extra in it and it says the movies here but it's not playing. Where can I see this movie? Everywhere I look I can't seem to find the whole movie. On YouTube, I only could see the trailer. Please somebody help me find the movie so I can watch it. Thank you. I did two scenes in the movie one was at the funeral, where it was raining and another was at the restaurant where Christy came by and shook my hand. It was exciting to work with her as I seen her in other movies before and we loved her movies. 9013561211 Donna Ashe.
