"Hochwürden drückt ein Auge zu" is a West German 90-minute live action film from 1971, so this one has its 25th anniversary this year. The writer and director is Harald Vock and this is probably his most known work today thanks to the participation of Roy Black, Uschi Glas and Georg Thomalla. The title already tells us who the star here is: it is Thomalla. He plays a priest who constantly gets in trouble, but always stays creative and open-minded in searching solutions to get out of the misery. It probably also helps that his superior is somebody who never gets angry at his somewhat lost sheep, but takes it all with lots of humour. I wish I could take this film with said humour too, but it's basically impossible. The writing is not good at all and I was not convinced by Thomalla either. In my opinion, this film is evidence of how he is not on par with Germany's best comedy actors in the 1960s and 1970s and not good enough to carry a film like this on his own. Admittedly, you need to say in his favor that the script also did not do him any favors. Like I said, the comedy in there nobody could have delivered in a funny way and the inclusion of Glas and Black felt so random. They were in there because of their names and because the makers could advertise this film with their names, but they were just there and added absolutely nothing to the film. The romance was completely lost. So yeah, as a whole 4 stars out of 10 is still fairly generous here. This was not a success at all and I wished it could have been over quicker.
