The screenplay that was shot was largely departed from the novel it's based on.
Tom Berenger was previously attached to star with Gareth Wardell to direct. Wardell had written the first version of the script, which was more closely based on the original novel.
The main character's name has been changed to Matt Sorenson once Dolph Lundgren was attached, hence some covers still referring to him as playing Murray Wilson which was the name in the original novel and previous drafts of the screenplay.
According to the DVD commentary, Anthony Hickox considers this to be Dolph's best acting to date.
