So-so Spaghetti Western with shoot'em up , treason , fights , twists and turns
ma-cortes2 November 2021
It deals with a corrupt sheriff who kills bandits in El Paso and other towns , he's called Jeff Randall : Jacques Bertier , then he plans to rob a liner stagecoach. As he join forces with an outlaw named Arizona Joe : Luigi Giuliani whose head is wanted alive or dead for an elevated reward. Along the way , the latter falls for a beautiful girl at an inn who betrays him to take the money . After robbing a shipment of gold about a quarter of million of dollars , they're mercilessly pursued by the Mexican Vargas : Fortunato Arena who'll stop at nothing to rob the loot and at whatever cost.

Typical Spaghetti Western with usual ingredients as go riding , thrills , plot twists , crossfire , crosses, double-crosses and strong confrontation. Stars Luigi Giuliani as a tough gunslinger who takes a loot , while being betrayed by a gorgeous woman . Luigi was a mediocre actor with some roles as starring, he even co-starred with Sara Montiel La Reina del Chantecler and Mas Bonita Que Ninguna as partenaire to Rocio Durcal and other films as La Isla de Arturo and another Spaghetti : Vengeance of Clark Harrison . Co-stars the French Jacques Berthier as a small time sheriff who teams up with Giuliani and the attractive Kathleen Parker, pseudonym of Trentini . Along with a group of familiar faces from Spaghetti and other Italian genres, such as : Fortunato Arena, Luciano Rossi , Roberto Messina , Pevarello, Giovanni Ivan Scratuglia, Franco Pesce, among others.

It contains a nice musival score by Nora Orlandi in Spaghetti style with catching songs at the beginning and ending by Don Powell . Atmospheric cinematography by director Osvaldo Civirani himself, as photography benefits itself from rocky exteriors in Sardinia with outdoors that bear remarkable resemblance to Spanish landscapes of La Pedriza, Manzanares del Real, Colmenal Viejo, Madrid, where in the Sixties shot a lot of Spaghetti/Paella Western. This craftsman Osvaldo Civirani directed all kind of genres, such as : Giallo : Devil with 7 faces . Softcore : Emmanuel Blanca , Mayra . Eurospy : Operation Poker, The Becket Case. Adventure : Kandal Prince of desert . Historical : Lucrezia . Peplum : Hercules against sons of sun . Western : Dead for a Dollar , Son of Django, Rick and John of the West , Two sons of Trinity , Sheriff with Gold . Rating : 5/10 . Average Pasta Western , only for hardcore aficionados.

Murky and unknown

Warning: Spoilers
SHERIFF WITH THE GOLD is a murky and unknown addition to the spaghetti western genre that fails to excite with a cheap budget and predictable plotting. There are various steretyped characters present on the screen but all of them feel paper-thin and the lack of a single sympathetic figure hurts this a lot. Once again the plot involves the theft of a gold shipment by various unscrupulous characters plotting against each other. The gold gets robbed by one character and then stolen from that character by another, and so on. I found this set-up more than a little ludicrous. Eventually a lawman sorts everything out and shoots the bad guys. This is a far cry from the kind of films made by Leone, Corbucci, Garrone, and Castellari.
