With muttering
boblipton28 January 2003
An animated version of Poe's THE RAVEN. While the art style, done to imitate impressionist German woodcuts of the early 1900s in blacks and reds, is interesting, the muttered narrative and interpolated comments by the narrator make it difficult to understand, nor does the overwrought music by Gadow contribute much.

boblipton is right...

This is one of the better shorts included with a DVD collection entitled "SHORTS 9: TRUST". Considering my review isn't super-glowing for DE RABE and it's one of the better ones, consider this before seeking out this DVD.

The review by boblipton is pretty good. Although it's short, what more can you say about this film? It is made up of animation that is reminiscent of German Expressionism and is black and white (with red added later for effect) and the narration is done by a man who mutters in a very depressed manner with a heavy German accent. While it's reasonably well done, you also wonder if the film makers deliberately made it unpleasant and impossible for the average viewer to sit through it---as this is the overall effect. I can respect what they did, but didn't enjoy this retelling of Edgar Allen Poe's "Raven". I'm sure that die-hard Goths will adore it, as it's full of angst and depression and misery.
