You have probably seen Christopher Nolan's Inception more than once, discussed Ari Aster's Midsommar with friends, rewatched Ridley Scott's Alien, and are now on the lookout for new discoveries, wondering where to find the gems of modern cinema.
In such cases, not the most talked about, but no less exciting projects come to the rescue.
1. The Fall, 2006
Tarsem Singh, a master of striking productions that transport viewers into worlds that are unprecedented in their beauty and danger, made one of the most amazing films in 2006 that can be described as a "story within a story."
The main character ends up in a hospital where he meets a little girl who helps a man cope with pain. In exchange for morphine, he tells a made-up story about a group of adventurers led by the Black Bandit. As the narrator loses the will to live and love, his characters face more and more trials,...

“I don’t like to hurt people,” John Sugar (Colin Farrell) says at the beginning of Sugar, the Apple TV+ series created by Mark Protosevich (The Cell) and directed for the most part by Fernando Meirelles (City of God). He means it.
As an onscreen private investigator, Sugar is atypical. He’s disarming and warm, even kind. The guy’s multilingual and speaks fluent Japanese, Arabic, and Spanish. And he’s patient — and that’s with everyone, mind, even violent types who pull guns on him or slash open his tailored suit jacket. Women invite him to bed; he tucks them in and goes home. Sugar also likes movies — he subscribes to Sight And Sound and Cahiers du Cinéma, among other notable mags — and, just to be thorough, he’s very fond of dogs and cats. Mike Hammer, he is not.

Remakes have always been and will always be a tricky proposition. You could have something as pure and wonderful as 1982’s The Thing, which is objectively better than the revered Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby version, but be trapped in purgatory for way too long before it is decided that its proper and loved. There’s a bunch that are better in different ways or at least thoroughly enjoyable in their own right like John Carpenter’s masterpiece, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and of course David Cronenberg’s The Fly. While you can argue the horror vs sci fi merits of any of these movies, their quality can’t be disputed. When it comes down to what you can or can’t remake, I think the gloves are off at this point. There’s very few sacred cows left and sometimes a remake can help. Something...

Though the Red Sea Film Festival will feature a slew of films from the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region – including 11 feature films from Saudi Arabia – there is a rich roster of international fare set to launch locally from Jeddah.
Kaleem Aftab, the festival’s director of international programming, says they received lots more submissions for this year’s third edition. He is particularly proud of the presence in competition of Indian-born auteur Tarsem Singh’s romancer “Dear Jassi,” the first film set in India by the flamboyant director of “The Cell,” and of Japanese master Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Venice prizewinner “Evil Does Not Exist.”
Peppered through various Red Sea sections are the Mena region premieres of other high-profile titles such as Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla”; Belgian-based Moroccan duo Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah flashy third feature “Gangsta”; British director James Marsh’s biographical film about Irish playwright Samuel Beckett...

If you followed indie film in the 90s, Vince Vaughn was at the center of a legendary tale. As the story goes, in order to get permission to use the theme from Jaws in the film Swingers, Doug Liman screened the film for Steven Spielberg’s approval. Not only did Stevie Boy allow them to use the scary shark tune but the legendary director knew he had to work with whoever was playing Trent Walker. And, he did just that when he cast Vince Vaughn in his Jurassic Park sequel, The Lost World. Spielberg instantly knew that Vince Vaughn was superstar material and he was correctomundo. Over the last nearly 30 years, he has given us some of the best comedic performances mixed in with some bone chilling anti-heroes. But it seems in the past few years Vaughn has slowed down his output to focus on smaller roles in more meaningful projects.

Dear Jassi arrives with echoes of Madonna’s 1989 hit “Dear Jessie” and its sugary promise of pink elephants and lemonade, but none of that turns out to be forthcoming in Tarsem Singh Dhandwar’s beautiful and brutal sixth feature. Instead, we have perhaps the most disturbing bait-and-switch since George Sluizer’s original iteration of The Vanishing, a Punjabi Juliet-meets-Romeo story that’s much harsher that any so-far-filmed version of West Side Story and a whole lot funnier. This dissonance takes a while to reveal itself, but when it does, the shock is visceral. The fact that almost everything is true is the killer blow, and the shockwave of that reverberates through the poignant final credits, a static shot that forces the audience, or maybe just simply dares them, to think about what they’ve just seen.

Horror in the year 2000 was something. Yeah, that’s it, it was something. A lot of it happened, some of it was great, some of it was good, and some of it, not so much. Actually, if the internet crowd is to be believed, the early 2000s, especially the year 2000 were abysmal for horror. We did get a few memorable films released in 2000 like the first Final Destination film, Cherry Falls, Ginger Snaps, The Cell, and American Psycho. However, the scales had some serious bad on the other side to balance it all out. Director Tarsem Singh has spilled beans on ‘Dear Jassi’; which is his first film to be shot in India. According to him, the film takes certain threads of inspiration from his own late mother, where he wondered why a Canadian woman of Indian heritage would plot to have her daughter abducted then murdered. ‘Dear Jassi’, ahead of its global release, was first premiered at the TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), and it is touted to be a romance story, but also features grisly murder and violence.

Tarsem Singh Dhandwar, director of The Cell and Immortals, returns with a tragic and horrifying romance that could afford a bit more subtlety
The director who got his start in music videos under the mononym of Tarsem expanded to Tarsem Singh for his feature debut The Cell, went back to a first-name basis for sophomore effort The Fall, billed himself as Tarsem Singh Dhandwar for his next two films, Tarsem Singh for one more, and back to the full moniker for the new romance Dear Jassi. If the constant rebrands suggest a continuous grappling with his Indian identity and Tinseltown assimilation, then his impassioned if overwrought take on a true-life Romeo and Juliet adds an intriguing wrinkle to the subject.
His works of pop-opera maximalism have ventured to every corner of the globe, the limits of the slumbering imagination, into myth and fable, and he’s now blazed a path...

The new film is set in the 1990s and based on a real-life incident. It follows Indian origin Canadian Jassi (Pavia Sidhu), who on a visit to her ancestral village in Punjab, India, falls in love with Mithu (Yugam Sood). Welp! That old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be. Kevin Hart recently learned a harsh lesson in the art of aging after challenging former NFL player Stevan Ridley to a 40-yard dash. During his attempt to do “young stuff,” Hart tore his lower abdomen and abductors. Calling himself the Dumbest Man Alive, Hart is recovering in a wheelchair after the incident. To control the narrative and perhaps warn his fans to respect their aging bodies, Hart posted a message to social media detailing his injury.
In the video, Hart says he argued with Ridley about who is faster. The duo agreed to engage in a 40-yard dash, and that’s where it all went south.
“We get out there, we go run the 40-yard dash,” Hart said. “40-yard dash. Guys, I blew all my s–t. Tore my lower abdomen, my abductors. I don’t even know what that is,...

Kristoffer Borgli’s Dream Scenario comedy, starring Nicolas Cage with a hair transformation and Julianne Nicholson, will open the Toronto Film Festival’s Platform competition program with a world premiere.
The latest film from the director of Cannes gem Sick of Myself also stars Dylan Baker, Kate Berlant, Michael Cera, Dylan Gelula and Tim Meadows, and is part of a competitive program of emerging and established directors headed to Toronto with world premieres.
“This surrealist satire-comedy has sharp, timely observations about social media culture — especially going viral — and its impact on the way that we interact with others in our day-to-day life. Cage delivers some of his finest work,” Robyn Citizen, director, programming & platform lead at TIFF, said in a statement about choosing A24’s Dream Scenario as the opening film for the competitive sidebar.
Toronto unveiled 10 features with world premieres for the festival section where international films outside the Hollywood studio orbit compete.

The I Am Legend episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
I was able to cover my favorite movie of all time in the first episode with The Thing and now we are going to look at an adaptation, or 3, of my favorite story of all time. While you may not know the work of Richard Matheson by name, I guarantee you know the work and the artist from somewhere. He is one of the most successful writers both on screen and off of the 20th century and many of his works have been adapted multiple times over. Today’s movie, while having 2 adaptations already in the books, was in development hell for what felt like forever, but...

The rise and fall of Batman feature films from 1989 through 1997 was fascinating to witness. One cannot understate the enormity of Tim Burton's "Batman" in the popular consciousness, nor the outsize box office it earned when it was first released. Internationally, "Batman" earned $411 million, which is about $990 million in 2023 dollars.
A sequel seemed inevitable, and in 1992, Burton returned with "Batman Returns." The sequel was, however, incredibly odd and dark, featuring a surreal visual aesthetic and way more violence. Some critics objected to the film's darkness, and there was a minor uproar. The third film swapped Bat actors as well as directors. Joel Schumacher's "Batman Forever," released in 1995, adopted an Atlantic City-like neon aesthetic and upped the color and energy from Burton's dour films. It, too, was a massive hit, and Schumacher's 1997 follow-up, "Batman & Robin" sought to up the ante, ratcheting up the colors and garishness to an even greater degree.

Set in a cotton-farming village in Sudan, “Cotton Queen” — which won the ArteKino Award at the Cannes Film Festival’s L’Atelier this year — follows a teenage girl as she begins to question cultural expectations and the collapsing cotton industry, under threat from both insect and human pests. “Lamp in the Dark” turns on a generational clash in a Sudanese village after the arrival of a mobile cinema.

Gamestop brought more than power to the players when it caused a financial catastrophe on Wall Street in 2021. At the time, Gamestop shares soared to unfathomable heights, making millionaires out of Redditors and costing hedge funds millions as traders scrambled to contain the situation. The impossible event taught Wall Street a valuable lesson about what happens when traders go against their masters, and now Sony is making a Gamestop movie to preserve the story.
According to Deadline, Vincent D’Onofrio, Anthony Ramos, and Dane DeHaan will join Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan, and Pete Davidson in the dramedy presentation. The concept is based on Ben Mezrich’s book The Antisocial Network, with a script by Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum.
Presented as a David-vs.-Goliath story, Dumb Money investigates how a group of private investors and internet trolls on a subreddit called WallStreetBets hoodwinked one of the most formidable hedge funds on Wall Street.

Every horror movie is about pain, but only the “Hellraiser” series is about sadomasochism — the electricity and agony of it, the higher calling of it. “Hellraiser,” a reboot of the franchise that began in 1987 and has given us nine sequels (time flies when you’re having fun imagining yourself being tortured for fun), is a movie that honors the transgressive tug of Clive Barker’s 1986 novella “The Hellbound Heart.” But it takes a long time for the new “Hellraiser” to get to what devotees of the series would call the good stuff. When it does, however, the movie doesn’t hold back. Flesh is torn and flayed, flesh is peeled and sliced, flesh gets split wide open with mystical mechanical devices. The film’s brutal final act may put you in mind of such queasy landmarks of cinematic mutilation as “Audition,” “The Cell,” the “Saw” series, the 2018 remake of “Suspiria,...

Apple TV+ is rounding out the cast of its forthcoming series Sugar.
The show, produced in house at Apple Studios, has added Dennis Boutsikaris, Alex Hernandez, Lindsay Pulsipher, James Cromwell and Anna Gunn to the cast. The five actors join the previously cast Colin Farrell, who will play the lead role, Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Amy Ryan.
Apple is keeping a lid on details about the series so far, describing Sugar only as a “genre-bending” series; it’s reportedly a present-day take on a private eye story. As such, there are no descriptors for the roles the five newly cast actors will play. Boutsikaris (Better Call Saul), Hernandez (Apple’s Invasion, UnReal) and Pulsipher (True Blood, Justified) will all be series regulars, and Emmy winners Cromwell (Succession, Babe) and Gunn (Breaking Bad) will recur.

Some stories seem impossible to translate from the written page to the moving image, but a few brave creatives have taken on the task and created masterpieces. Japanese author Yasutaka Tsutsui's acclaimed 1993 novel "Paprika" is one such story, about a brilliant young psychologist named Chiba who begins experimenting with dream therapy. Chiba and her research partner, Tokita, develop a machine that allows them to not only view the dreams of others but experience them firsthand. When their dream-walking machine is stolen, the two have to figure out how to track him down in the real world while dealing with the repercussions in their dreams. It's mind-bending science fiction that works in part because of the limitless potential of the imagination.

Since dancing her way onto the entertainment scene in the late ‘80s, cultural icon Jennifer Lopez has become widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s foremost triple-threat entertainers. Also known as “J.Lo” or “Jenny from the Block,” thanks to her 2002 hit single, Lopez rose to fame as a dancer on the sketch comedy TV series “In Living Color.” Her earliest movies include her film debut “My Little Girl,” plus the made-for-tv “Nurses on the Line: The Crash of Flight 7,” indie drama “My Family,” action comedy “Money Train,” the Robin Williams-led “Jack,“ and crime thriller “Blood and Wine.”
Lopez had her breakout role with Gregory Nava’s “Selena” in 1997, earning a Golden Globe nomination for her starring performance as the late musical legend.
