Contrary to popular belief, this TV series was never intended to be a spin off of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). However the series does share the idea of humans co-existing with toons as shown in Roger Rabbit, despite that the Bonkers series was entirely animated with no live action.
Although the character of Bonkers D. Bobcat was originally conceived as the star of his own show, he ended up debuting in a theatrically released short called "Petal to the Metal (1992)" and and also appeared in a series of segments on "Raw Toonage (1992)" prior to the debut of his own show. He costarred with Jitters, Grumbles and Fawn Deer.
Episodes like "New Partners on the Block (1993)" and "Fall Apart Bomb Squad (1993)" were taken out circulation due to the Oklahoma City Bombings and the September 11th tragedy.
Darkwing Duck (also voiced by Jim Cummings) makes a brief appearance in one episode in Bonkers' dream.
The show premiered on the Disney Channel with Miranda Wright as Bonker's partner and the supporting cast of Jitters, Fawn Deer, Grumbles and the Sergeant Francis Grating. When the show was moved to network, however, Bonkers' partner was Lucky Piquel, the character design and overall "look" of the show had become much darker and the supporting cast was Fallapart Rabbit, Toots the Horn and Chief Leonard Kanifky. Miranda makes a brief appearance behind a desk in one of these episodes and a reference is made to Bonkers having a blonde woman as a partner in another. Finally, after several episodes ran, Lucky left, Miranda became Bonkers' partner and they began running the Disney Channel episodes.
