The RKO Sportscope series of shorts covered a lot of college athletics. There was an annual compilation of the best play from college football of course, put together from their extensive newsreel operations. They did more than football, though, and here's one covering Florida State University's competitive gymnastics team. There they are, bouncing over cars (I hope there are trampolines involved, because a cartoon kangaroo couldn't leap that high), or doing somersaults from the rings, twenty feet above the ground (how did they get there?).
To old non-jocks like me, there's something superior about gymnastics. Football is for guys built like gorillas; basketball for seven-footers, track for the preternaturally swift, and baseball takes too long to play. Gymnastics is graceful and clearly requires dedication, so it's virtuous and worth paying attention to. Well, that and women's curling. That's just weird!
