The late 1990s and early 2000s were a weird era for films. There is definitely an influence from Y2K, and it seemed like there was an attitude that anything goes from some and a tightening of the belt from others. The world was in an odd place, and this influenced everything in culture like music, television, and films. 2002 gave us a wide variety of horror, like Queen of the Damned, Fear Dot Com, Cabin Fever, Bubba Ho-Tep, Dog Soldiers, and Bloody Mallory. This was the end of an era and the start of another for David Arquette it seemed. A time when he tested the “leading man” waters. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go as planned as box office bomb after box office bomb came. Films like Ravenous, Ready to Rumble, 3000 Miles to Graceland, See Spot Run, and The Grey Zone all featured Arquette in some form but...

This review contains spoilers for "The Iron Claw."
The world of professional wrestling is filled with enough tragedy to constitute its own dedicated documentary series about it, but there has never been a story of familial annihilation quite like the Von Erichs. Often compared to the Kennedy family, the Von Erichs were/are a dynasty of wrestling superstars and the subject of unimaginable despair. Telling their story outside of a documentary setting seems an impossible task, but Sean Durkin has done the impossible with "The Iron Claw." While marketed as a biopic, "The Iron Claw" is more like a dramatic retelling of the Von Erich story — a legend retold blow by blow and presented as if it were modern folklore. And yet despite the creative liberties taken — including a glaring omission (more on that later) — "The Iron Claw" is the type of drama that makes a home in the darkest...

The 1990s were the heyday for kid-led sports movies, with films like "The Big Green," "The Sandlot," "Little Giants," "Ladybugs," "Air Bud," "Little Big League," "Angels in the Outfield," and "Rookie of the Year" becoming household favorites, but only one* became a certified cultural phenomenon. Disney's "The Mighty Ducks" spawned a trilogy of films, an animated television series, a live-action sequel television series, and a real-life National Hockey League hockey team. Frank Zappa, who died in 1993, is one of the least understood artists of the 20th Century, which is ironic because he was also the most prolific. Introduced to the world as a bicycle-playing artiste concrète sitting naked on a toilet, he was a harmonic genius who experimented with sonic assault weapons and visual subversions. Frank Zappa was the Nikola Tesla of music. Alex Winter’s documentary Zappa, which is now available to watch in the UK and Ireland on Altitude.film, clarifies many of the contradictions by highlighting Zappa’s primary focus. The Mothers of Invention bandleader was a composer.
As such, Frank was also a cultural ambassador, a hero of free expression, a hysterical satirist, and a guitar virtuoso. He was celebrated in the Czech Republic after the Velvet Revolution, and castigated by parental control mongers in America. But even Frank knew his rep enough to drop an album...

This odd, documentary-style version of how the US actor became a wrestler is strained at the seams
Here is the strange, frantic, semi-explained story of the Hollywood star David Arquette, a member of the renowned Arquette acting clan, and his recent attempts to reverse a celebrity career slump by making it as a professional wrestler, 20 years after he actually won America’s World Championship Wrestling belt in 2000 as a weird byproduct of being in the wrestling movie Ready to Rumble. Apparently, the organisers found him sufficiently impressive to let him participate in the actual event’s “storylines” and even fluke a victory – although the backstage discussions around that are never revealed here. The wrestling world has form in letting celebs have a go (Donald Trump has done many WWE stunts) but the pure silliness and improbability of it all enraged diehard wrestling fans, who felt Arquette contaminated the brand. Well,...

If you had of told me a week ago that a documentary about Deputy Dewey from the Scream movies was something I needed in my life right now, I would of called you a damn fool. I you had told me that a documentary about that actor who tried to be a wrestler for five minutes would take me on a rollercoaster of emotions – and I mean the full spectrum of human feeling: the highs, the lows and everything in between – well again I would of scoffed at you.
However I am somewhat of a wrestling fan… I am somewhat of a David Arquette fan… Also at the best of times if there is one thing us Brits cant get enough of is a bloody good redemption story and at our worst we love good car crash...

Can you trust a documentary that’s set in the world of professional wrestling, where the action is scripted and the storylines are phony?
Can you believe what you see in a nonfiction film about an actor who has always to some degree approached his career like an extended piece of performance art?
And if you don’t trust it and you can’t believe it, can you still be entertained and maybe even touched by “You Cannot Kill David Arquette?”
I’d say the answers to those questions are no, no and hell, yeah.

Actor David Arquette — who once posed on the cover of Vanity Fair alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, and the rest of 1996’s hottest leading men before the “Scream” franchise left him typecast as a terminal doofus — is just kind of sick of being a joke. “I’m just kind of sick of being a joke,” the now-48-year-old laments at one point in his new documentary while dressed in nothing but a rhinestone cape and vaping on the back of a pony in his backyard. It’s a funny moment in a movie full of good-natured howlers, but Arquette isn’t kidding. On the contrary, he’s willing to die for a little respect. And he just might have to in order to earn the kind of respect he’s looking for.
It all started when Arquette partnered with World Championship Wrestling to promote his goofy 2000 comedy “Ready to Rumble.

In 2000, David Arquette, coming off “Never Been Kissed” and the third “Scream” film, co-starred in a comedy called “Ready to Rumble,” which attempted to satirize the hyperbolic freak show of professional wrestling. To promote the movie, Arquette got woven into World Championship Wrestling storylines, mostly as a comic foil — after all, he wasn’t a real wrestler. But a few weeks into the film’s release, in a setup bogus enough to shame Andy Kaufman, it was arranged that Arquette would win a fight to become the WCW Heavyweight Champion. Which he did (his reign lasted all of 12 days).
This was a stunt so outlandish that wrestling fans considered it a bridge of fakery too far. Some said that Arquette’s championship had ruined the sport. So even though Arquette, a wrestling aficionado from way back, was just riding the cross-promotional PR train and doing what he’d been told,...

Before I start this review, I feel like I should go ahead and just admit a few things. One, I am a ridiculously huge fan of David Arquette and his work, which includes his performances in the Scream series to Ready to Rumble to his directorial effort on The Tripper and everything in between. And two, I’m one of the few people out there who was actually excited when he was working in WCW. With that in mind, I was already totally and completely on board for You Cannot Kill David Arquette before I even saw a single minute of footage. But now that I have had the opportunity to check out this all-encompassing project from directors David Darg and Price James, You Cannot Kill David Arquette quickly has become not only my favorite documentary of 2020, but one of my favorite films, regardless of category, of the year as well.

If you’re a fan of pro-wrestling, you’re probably familiar with the time actor David Arquette (Scream) was part of the 2000 WCW season. During the Slamboree pay-per-view event, he even became the world heavyweight champion. The entire scenario was created to promote his new film at the time, Ready to Rumble, which saw two diehard wrestling fans help their long time hero return to glory after he’s unceremoniously ousted from their beloved wrestling franchise. Much like his character of Gordie Boggs in that 20-year-old film, wrestling fans can be overly passionate, and Arquette’s claim to the championship belt was met with hatred and disgust by the public.
And yet since childhood, Arquette himself has been a passionate pro-wrestling fan, and spent 18 years shrouded in shame from what was meant to be a simple promotional tool. He knew what went wrong, and he wanted to fix it. So,...

On this special episode of Corpse Club, Heather Wixson is joined by special guest Arquette to discuss the new documentary, which chronicles his return to professional wrestling, his quest for redemption following his divisive WCW World Heavyweight Championship win in 2000, and his undying passion for the professional sport.
Arquette also reflects on working with Martin Landau in the wrestling movie Ready to Rumble, talks about his life-threatening Gwc deathmatch with Nick Gage, and discusses his anticipated return to the role of Dewey Riley in Scream 5, the first movie in the franchise to not be directed by the late,...

So you can’t kill David Arquette. Can you cripple him? That appears to be the goal in this documentary since to be fully honest, David Arquette’s career might have been okay for a long time had he not messed around with the WCW for any longer than it took to make the movie Ready To Rumble. Let’s be honest here, the movie was goofy, kind of stupid, but it was also just bad enough to be good since it featured several actual wrestlers, Martin Landau, Oliver Platt, Scott Caan, and several other notable celebrities that made it worth watching. 20 years ago, David Arquette was crowned the World Heavyweight Champion. Okay — it was just as a marketing stunt to promote his film “Ready to Rumble,” in which he starred as a wrestling-obsessed fan. But that stunt earned him the unofficial title of the most hated man in professional wrestling. Two decades later, Arquette is setting out to clear his name with the documentary, “You Cannot Kill David Arquette.”

David Darg, an Oscar-nominee for the documentary short film “Body Team 12,” directed “You Cannot Kill David Arquette,” and he’s been filming throughout Arquette’s tour for the last two years. Xtr, a new nonfiction film and TV studio, will be part of...

A change of pace from the usual action-driven output from WWE studios, “Fighting With My Family” at times more closely brings to mind 2000’s guilty-pleasure comedy “Ready to Rumble,” one of the few filmmaking ventures by the wrestling conglomerate’s then-rival WCW. The current film has some of the same crotch-kick-level humor, and much of the same shameless brand self-promotion, if regrettably none of David Arquette’s inimitable spazardry. But there’s less guilt in this pleasure — in fact, it’s probably the best of the 50-odd movies WWE has produced since 2002’s “The Scorpion King,” which starred this film’s producer, Dwayne Johnson, who steps briefly into the action here.
Recounting the real-life story of the rise of Saraya-Jade Bevis — aka Paige — from working-class Norwich, U.K. to WWE Divas Champion at age 21, “Fighting With My Family” may not be an Oscar contender but it has enough wit, heart,...

David Arquette is a glutton for punishment ... returning to the wrestling ring after a deathmatch that almost killed him. Arquette took the mic at a news conference Friday night to hype his upcoming match with veteran pro wrestler Jocephus in a "hair match" for the National Wrestling Alliance. The stakes ... loser shaves his head. Nwa President and former Smashing Pumpkins frontman, Billy Corgan, kept the 2 men apart during the faceoff at the Pinnacle Family Entertainment Center in Clarksville,...

David Arquette said his gruesome, bloody injury from Friday night’s wrestling “death match” was because of his “lack of experience.”
“Don’t try this at home,” the actor/producer wrote in a Twitter message on Monday.
Arquette climbed in the ring on Friday night at GCW’s Joey Janela’s L.A. Confidential with Combat Zone Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion Nick Gage, who hit him over the head with a light-bulb tube. The glass shattered, with a shard cutting into Arquette’s neck, which began to bleed profusely.

If you think there are no second acts in American life, just look to David Arquette. The actor, best known for his role in the Scream Franchise, has made a name for himself in recent months as a professional wrestler traversing the independent circuit, which might come as a surprise to anyone who never saw Ready to Rumble. Arquette starred in the 2000 pro-wrestling comedy at around the same time he implausibly became WCW World Heavyweight Champion, an ill-advised development that has often been cited as a death knell for the now-defunct company.
Though his tenure has been going well so far, last night Arquette participated in his first death match — an ultra-violent spectacle in which everything from pizza cutters to light tubes are acceptable weapons — and was left with a serious wound to the neck that almost resulted in the match ending early.

David Arquette is fed up with you damn haters, and tells TMZ Sports he's coming back to pro wrestling to shut up everyone who's been dissing his foray into the squared circle 20 years ago. You might not remember ... but David was once WCW Heavyweight Champion (yes, it happened) back in 2000 as a story line to promote Arquette's movie "Ready To Rumble." Fans hated it from the get-go, and it's been almost universally viewed as one...

Corey Swanson has problems. He’s almost 30, still lives in his mom’s basement, doesn’t date, and his career amounts to slicing meat in an archaic deli that no one ever comes to – unless they want to rob it. After a chance encounter with a popular former classmate, Corey learns that his high school crush Sheena Halliday will soon be in town for their 10-year reunion. Sheena, now a world-famous athlete, has been dubbed “the Lindsay Lohan of the wrestling world”. Few concrete details have emerged regarding the long-awaited sequel, which follows up on Ridley Scott’s 1982 original. That sci-fi landmark stars Ford as a semi-retired detective in 2019 Los Angeles, where four dangerous synthetic humans (or replicants) are on the loose; no plot details are presently available for the as-yet untitled sequel. 13-time Academy Award nominee Roger Deakins (who lensed Villeneuve’s “Sicario” and “Prisoners” in addition to many, many others) will serve as cinematographer.

Forget No Holds Barred, Ready To Rumble and The Wrestler. Pretty much every wrestling fan has seen them, for better or for worse, and they’ve penetrated mainstream pop culture through cable reruns and award shows.
However, there’s a whole world of bizarre, terrible and oddly wonderful wrestling films that once seen, cannot be unseen. There’s vanity biopics, Japanese science fiction, and family-friendly dog shenanigans (seriously), but the common thread that stretches between them all is our beloved pseudo-sport.
I’ve included Immortal Dialogue for all of these cinematic treasures, and I want you to know that I didn’t just crib these from an IMDb quotations page. Don’t get me wrong, I totally would have, but most of these movies are so obscure that they don’t even have quotations on their IMDb pages!
You’re welcome.
Proceed at your own risk, friends.

Once upon a time, Gwyneth Paltrow and Martha Stewart were gal pals. (We promise! Look at the photo above, from 2011.) But now, where there once was friendship, all that remains is shade. Ever since Paltrow’s lifestyle brand goop started gaining momentum, Stewart — arguably the queen of lifestyle — hasn’t been pleased. Is it possible Stewart feels her old friend is barking up her territory (and might even be jealous)?
All oven mitts are off when it comes to these two Hollywood titans. Let’s take a stroll through the blonde duo’s friendship — if you can call it that — and figure out just where it all went wrong.

Music festivals have never appealed to me. Especially the ones that involve camping in the dead of summer. The bands that are booked for festivals either don’t register or elicit a chuckle. Being around hundreds to thousands of people for that long sounds like one of the ten Chambers of Hell not mentioned in Big Trouble in Little China. Not to mention chronic swamp ass for days.

I have to admit, I am sold on Ryback. This guy is indeed a machine, both in physique and ability. He is without a doubt, barring injury, the future of the WWE. But thanks to the initial push orchestrated by the WWE his whole persona has been reduced to nothing more than a Goldberg clone.
Now although initially in the first few months I would have to agree, it has since become truly annoying (to me at least) to hear the crowd chant Goldberg every time he is in the ring. Like mindless drones or sheep they carry on regardless of how idiotic that chant has now become. For quite simply, Ryback is Nothing like Goldberg.
Now if there was anyone who Ryback reminds me off from back in WCW, it would be Scott Steiner. To a lesser extent I have also been known to compare the man to a young Rhyno.

The news was announced a few minutes ago on Marvel.com. Robert Downey Jr reprises his role as Tony Stark in a 2-picture agreement for Marvel’s The Avengers 2 (May 1, 2015) and Marvel’s The Avengers 3 (undated). The sequel will start production on March 2014 led again by writer and director Joss Whedon. Downey had been involved in tough negotiations with cheapskate Marvel as I’ve previously reported; now the question is which other Avengers 2 actors will solve their contract disputes. Downey is represented at CAA by Bryan Lourd, Jim Toth and Matt Leaf and by his attorneys Tom Hansen and Stewart Brookman of the firm Hansen Jacobson. Downey’s past two Marvel films, 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers and this year’s Iron Man 3, rank as two of the top five grossing films of all time, collectively earning over $2.7 billion worldwide to date. Marvel.com said it will be revealing additional casting updates,...

Usually it’s the ladies who love to show off their colored coifs, but last night (June 18) David Arquette paraded his newly-lightened locks before the paparazzi.
The “Ready to Rumble” hunk displayed a bleached blonde hairdo while hamming it up outside Bootsy Bellows nightclub in West Hollywood.
In career news, David recently signed on to star in a Civil War drama called “Field of Lost Shoes” along with Tom Skerritt and Lauren Holly.
David will play a Union artillery officer in the flick, about several young cadets at Virginia Military Institute who band together in order to protect their school and homes while the Union forces invade the Shenandoah Valley.

It's already made $700 million at the worldwide box office, and now Deadline reveals that Robert Downey Jr. has already made over $35 million from Iron Man 3 with his eventual payday set to rise even higher than that. Remember those reports about him taking a whopping $50 million for The Avengers? Well, the site believes that it was actually more along the lines of $70 million - $80 million. However, that's by no means the most interesting part of their piece entitled, "Robert Downey Jr And 'Avengers' Cast Ready To Rumble With Stingy Marvel Over Sequel Money And Strong-Arming". According to Nikki Finke, she has learned, "that Marvel and therefore owner Disney are going to run into big trouble on that sequel because the upfront pay, backend compensation, break even points and box office bonuses aren’t pinned down yet for several big stars and castmates. Wrestlers have been performing in Hollywood ever since… well, ever. However some of their performances have been so dreadful this website even dedicated a list to them. We decided then that the reason most movies-starring-wrestlers were godawful was because they take their stars outside their natural environment – like the Scorpion King, Marine trilogy and *shudder* Suburban Commando.
This list will pay tribute to the best Hollywood movies that are actually concerned with the fine and noble sport of pro-wrestling. Remember that David Arquette movie that almost single-handedly destroyed WCW? Roddy Piper’s “timeless classic” that defined the Rock ‘n’ Wrestling era? Or when Hulk Hogan’s on-screen appearances didn’t involve ramming another man’s wife? No? Then take a trip down memory lane with the 7 greatest wrestling movies in history.
Note: This list only includes films which relate to the sport of professional wrestling, and shall not include non-wrestling titles produced by WWE Studios.
