Considering imdb high rating ,it's obvious that this movie is certainly overrated; a remake of Lherbier's first talkie (1930) , it remains a rather mundane melodrama. Its update was necessary and the Folies Bergères artist becomes an earnest stage actress; the unfortunate child becomes a nice generous schemer with a dog,Clementine ,in tow.
The screenplay is so predictable it cannot generate much interest ; playing is much less histrionic than in the Lherbier version, mainly as far as the female principal is concerned .
What saves this movie is the warm rapport mom has with her sonny ,even when she slaps him in the face; Gaby Morlay and François Périer are marvelous :an extra star for them.
