Gas mask soldiers wreak havoc in this trash masterpiece
Leofwine_draca26 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
PHANTOM SOLDIERS is an extremely rare entry in the Vietnam combat genre of film-making which was dying out at the tail-end of the 1980s. I don't think this movie has come out on DVD or Blu-ray yet and is only available on old VHS releases. It's listed as an Italian/Filipino production although there's little Italian influence here and none of the stars of Italian cinema that you'd expect to see; instead the movie is entirely populated by performers familiar from Filipino cinema, like Mike Monty.

The film is one of dozens of Z-grade B-movies made by Teddy Page, a man who can always be relied upon to deliver cheesy action in spades. PHANTOM SOLDIERS starts out with the best scene of the whole film, in which a platoon of gas mask-wearing soldiers attack a Vietnamese village and proceed to massacre every villager right down to the last child. They also blow up all of the straw huts in endless explosive scenes.

The rest of the film goes downhill from there, but to be honest there would be no way of topping this intense, endlessly violent set-piece which reminded me of similar moments in Stallone's last RAMBO movie. Some American soldiers decide to track down the villains but end up being captured or killed themselves, so another soldier and his men go in to rescue them. What follows is endless jungle action, with a whole slew of extras being machine gunned and blown up. Expect no niceties of plotting, no characterisation, nothing like that, just scenes which remind you a bit of PREDATOR (the soldiers mowing down the jungle after they spot an enemy) and endless low rent action. It really is something to behold.

Make sure to see Phantom Soldiers!

Warning: Spoilers
During the Vietnam war, Green Beret Lt. Michael Custer (Sperry) and some of his fellow soldiers go MIA. Custer's brother, Texas Ranger Dan Custer (Thayer) wants answers, so he travels to the border of North Vietnam. What the Custer brothers don't know, is that they're up against the Phantom Soldiers - terrifying, seemingly invincible, remorseless killing machines. They wear gas masks with weird protrusions and have heavy arms. They kill, destroy and explode everything in their path, and no one is safe. Can the Custers, or the entire U.S. Army for that matter, stop them? And where did they come from? What do they want? The secrets of the mysterious Phantom Soldiers will be revealed...

This is the ultimate Exploding Hut movie. You think you've seen exploding huts before? You ain't seen nothing' yet. Phantom Soldiers is a feast of massive explosions, constant shooting, guard tower falls and countless deaths. The opening sequence alone is mesmerizing and must be seen. Director Teddy Page was surely in a state of grace when he executed this brilliant sequence. While the opening sequence is definitely a movie highlight, there's still plenty of awesomeness on show for the rest of the film. Max Thayer, who must have it written into his contract that he won't appear in a movie unless thousands of people die - remember this is the guy from No Dead Heroes - plays a Texas good ole boy with plenty of Dan Rather-style down-home expressions. Interestingly, Phantom Soldiers marries the over-the-top violence with an interesting concept, as well as subtle comments on war. That keeps it from becoming the mindless shooting we always see. Just a dash of originality goes a long way. You won't forget the Phantom Soldiers.

A true cult rarity, Phantom Soldiers never received a VHS release in America, and as of this writing, has also not received a DVD release. More people stateside should know about this movie. People should have been talking about it since the 80's, but it never entered our consciousness because in this country, it's as "MIA" as Mike Custer.

Speaking of which, Sperry as Mike Custer resembles Sgt. Slaughter. No one really talks about Sgt. Slaughter anymore, which is a shame, and, seeing as how this movie is filled to the brim with 80's awesomeness, the legendary wrestler was surely an influence. The funny acting/dialogue/dubbing we've come to love in these Philippines-shot productions is clearly on display, along with the ever-present high-quality blow-ups. The choice to name our heroes "Custer" has some interesting historical connotations - was this done on purpose? (Side Note: Hal Moore, the Vietnam hero immortalized in the film We Were Soldiers 2002, headed up the First Battalion of the Seventh Cavalry, the same as George Armstrong Custer).

Nonstop action, ultra-violent in a Wardogs (1986) sort of way, and just plain badass in every manner imaginable, make sure you see Phantom Soldiers.

Probably the worst brainless garbage ever produced.
christ_o16 September 2011
The movie really is impressively bad. The story is stupid. The director is totally incapable. And on top of all that, the lead actor has as much charisma and talent as a dead amoeba. Interestingly however, you hardly notice all that with every single actor being at least as bad as and talentless as he is. In fact, a colorful test image is easily more entertaining than this useless and brainless piece of stupid crap. Honestly, the director should have pursued a career at Walmart instead... Some so called directors just don't have what a takes! Please stop making movies!

For 40 years Troma has has shown that independent movies can be a lot of fun. The big difference is, that Troma knows EXACTLY what they are doing. The director of "Phantom Soldiers" obviously doesn't.

An overlooked late entry stylish Vietnam combat movie
paulcooke3719 June 2001
From the opening fifteen minutes of action packed carnage the on screen style of the 'Phantom Soldiers' garbed in black biochemical warfare outfits equipped with the unforgettable image of gas masks adorned with protrusions are the stuff of apocalyptic nightmares. The outfit of death close in on a Vietnamese family community mercilessly wiping them out with all manner of automatic weaponry & biological killing man woman & child with extreme prejudice for humanity. The American special forces green berets are sent in as led by Michael Custer but are lured into a trap and all bar two of his men are wiped out before the three of them are captured by the mysterious band of rogue soldiers. We are introduced in equally action packed & explosive circumstances to Texas Ranger brother, Daniel Custer who learns of his brothers captivity by the media labelled 'Phantom Soldiers' and fatigues up for a Rambo rescue mission. Daniel is surprised by the mercenaries but not killed as he is seen as a Pentagon attache & so fed the story that the 'Phantom Soldiers' are not at all what he seems & given the relative freedom of their camp only to discover a Russian propaganda at the underbelly as well as finding his brother & men held captive, readied for execution. Escaping the attentions of his minders Daniel frees his brother & men as they make a break for freedom armed to the hilt as an explosive finale ensues in bloody & action packed style reminiscent throughout the entire movie. The style of film making is excellent & the superb use of full frame material is extremely well realised as Director Irvin Johnson produces scene after scene of solid actor dialogue delivery & spectacular head & body multiple bullet hits in bloody & gory detail. This is one movie that clearly came at the end of the Vietnam war action film stable & was overlooked cinematically even on its shamelessly low video release issuing which is a great shame as this stands out as a real highlight & even dares to contain original themes previously unseen as a result of its low profile exposure.

For a low budget Vietnam film... IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!

Warning: Spoilers
Phantom soldiers is probably my favorite war movie.. Many people would have considered this a 4.5/10 movie but i give it a 9/10...

The plot of this movie is: Daniel Custer, a Texas ranger who works for the pentagon. His brother get's missing in action in Vietnam and Daniel goes there to get him home again. But the big problem is The Phantom Soldiers! It's a bunch of highly trained, sadistic unknown soldiers in black clothes and gas masks that kills everything they see. And take Daniel's little brother as their prisoner!

I love the plot... I love the action... But the acting was a disappointment :( only 7 characters in this film did a great job acting while the rest failed.

THIS MOVIE IS LEGENDARY FOR IT'S OPENING SCENE... (this contains spoilers) In the beginning the phantom soldiers completely destroying and killing everybody in the village including women and children... Every Hut is blown up all men, women and children die and the phantom soldiers make there presence deadly.

Right now i'm at a film school and in the future i am going to remake this film....

I say watch Phantom soldiers and buy it online at www.revengeismydestiny.com
